    Abstract Balancing part-time work and studies has become commonplace for university students in Canada and other countries where the costs of education have risen over time. While there is a substantial literature on the impacts of term-time work on studies, little has been written about campus employment programs, which are becoming more commonplace in North American universities. This paper addresses this gap by considering students' experiences in such a program at a western Canadian university. Focusing primarily on qualitative data from a longitudinal study, we examine the various reasons for the attractiveness of this program, which go beyond the promise of professional, career-related work experience. Our analysis draws on the academic literature on work-study roles, which examines whether term-time work has a more positive or negative effect on student outcomes as well as sociocultural literature that is more attentive to different contextual features of the work-study relationship. We find that university-sponsored jobs are highly valued by students for their workplace relationships, regulation, and flexibility. Positive relationships at work are facilitated by supervisors' recognition of students' academic priorities and opportunities to develop peer-support networks on campus. Other important features for students include the convenience of working where one studies, and the ability to build work schedules around academic schedules. However, the limited access to 'good' campus jobs raises concerns about equity.

    Abstract

    Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disease leading to progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, in severe cases also affecting the bulbar and respiratory muscles.The clinical spectrum of the disease is extremely variable, in the most severe cases resulting in perinatal death, while at the least severe end of the spectrum causing some motor deficits in old age without the loss of ambulation. Spinal muscular atrophy care has changed dramatically in recent years due to the availability of new therapeutic options. 
    The FDA approved nusinersen in 2016, this was followed by the approval of onasemnogene abeparvovec in 2019 and risdiplam in 2020. The EMA approved all three therapies a year later. Two of the threapies work at the pre-mRNA level, one at the DNA level. The clinical studies leading to the approval of the three drugs included patients of different ages and clinical conditions, and utilised partly different motor and functional scales. Therefore, direct comparison of these clinical studies is not possible. However, an increasing amount of real-world data contribute to the better understanding of the efficacy of the different therapies for patients of different ages and clinical conditions, in a real-world setting. Thus, the question may arise “Which is the best SMA therapy?”. This is an impossible question to answer. Indeed the question “Which therapy is the most suitable for a certain patient at a certain time?” is much more realistic. Here, we provide a brief overview of the objectively measurable results of the three therapies to date and an outlook into future therapeutic avenues.

    Abstract Withdrawal of treatment from critically ill children is a contentious and ethically difficult area. The principle of best interests was central to three recent high-profile legal cases and raised questions about how this is demonstrated in healthcare for children whose treatment may be of no benefit to them. This article discusses the legal and ethical aspects of caring for such children. Nurses are important advocates and should balance their obligation to deliver holistic and family-centred care with that of keeping the child as the central focus, particularly with decision-making. In cases of disagreement between families and clinicians, children's voices are particularly vulnerable to being lost. Pre- and post-registration education, research and a higher profile for nurses in multidisciplinary decision-making are suggested as ways to improve the nursing contribution to this important debate.

    Abstract Purpose of review: This study aims to review diagnosis, potential complications, and clinical management in craniofacial fibrous dysplasia.
    Recent findings: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare mosaic disorder in which normal bone and marrow are replaced with expansile fibro-osseous lesions. Disease presents along a broad spectrum and may be associated with extraskeletal features as part of McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS). The craniofacial skeleton is one of the most commonly impacted areas in FD, and its functional and anatomical complexities create unique challenges for diagnosis and management. This review summarizes current approaches to diagnosis and management in FD/MAS, with emphasis on the clinical and therapeutic implications for the craniofacial skeleton.
