    Abstract The configuration of implant-supported prostheses is considered to influence the magnitude of stress concentrations, affecting their survival rate. The purpose of this study is to determine, through strain gauge measurements during load application, the dispersion and magnitude of strain concentrations in different implant-supported prosthesis designs. All designs matched those commonly used in posterior partially edentulous states. Three implants were inserted into an epoxy resin model (PLM-4B Vishay Measurements Group Inc., Raleigh, NC, USA), allowing for the delivery of three- and four-unit crowns in different cemented configurations. Loads were applied at vertical and oblique directions over the cast crowns in six different configurations representing various posterior partially edentulous restorations. The readings from the strain gauges adhered to the implant necks' presented data on implant strain. Prostheses including cantilevers showed the highest strain among the three-unit prostheses within the prosthetic complex, and three single units showed the least (8133 µs vs. 201 µs, respectively). Angulated load application also had a role in amplifying the strains recorded, resulting in total strains of between 3.5 and 20 times higher than during vertical loading in all configurations. It can be concluded that the configuration of implant-fixed partial prosthesis changes the loads engaging the restoration, the implant, and, probably, the supporting bone.

    Abstract The distinct functions and phenotypes of human tissues and cells derive from the activity of biological processes that varies in a context-dependent manner. Here, we present the Process Activity (ProAct) webserver that estimates the preferential activity of biological processes in tissues, cells, and other contexts. Users can upload a differential gene expression matrix measured across contexts or cells, or use a built-in matrix of differential gene expression in 34 human tissues. Per context, ProAct associates gene ontology (GO) biological processes with estimated preferential activity scores, which are inferred from the input matrix. ProAct visualizes these scores across processes, contexts, and process-associated genes. ProAct also offers potential cell-type annotations for cell subsets, by inferring them from the preferential activity of 2001 cell-type-specific processes. Thus, ProAct output can highlight the distinct functions of tissues and cell types in various contexts, and can enhance cell-type annotation efforts.     Abstract The main reason for the deterioration of membrane operation during water purification processes is biofouling, which has therefore been extensively studied. Biofouling was shown to reduce membrane performance reflected by permeate flux decline, reduced selectivity, membrane biodegradation, and consequently, an increase in energy consumption. Studies of biofouling focused on the identification of the assembled microbial communities, the excretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and their combined role in reduced membrane performance and lifetime. However, the link between the structure and function of biofouling communities has not been elucidated to date. Here, we provide a novel insight, suggesting that bacterial functions rather than composition control biofouling traits on reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. We studied the potential activity of RO biofilms at metatranscriptome resolution, accompanied by the morphology and function of the biofouling layer over time, including microscopy and EPS composition, adhesion, and viscoelastic properties. To that end, we cultivated natural multispecies biofilms in RO membranes under treated wastewater flow and extracted RNA to study their taxonomies and gene expression profiles. Concomitantly, the biofilm structure was visualized using both scanning electron microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscopy. We also used quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation to characterize the affinity of EPS to membrane-mimetic sensors and evaluated the viscoelasticity of the Ex-Situ EPS layer formed on the sensor. Our results showed that different active bacterial taxa across five taxonomic classes were assembled on the RO membrane, while the composition shifted between 48 and 96 h. However, regardless of the composition, the maturation of the biofilm resulted in the expression of similar gene families tightly associated with the temporal kinetics of the EPS composition, adhesion, and viscoelasticity. Our findings highlight the temporal selection of specific microbial functions rather than composition, featuring the adhesion kinetics and viscoelastic properties of the RO biofilm.

    Abstract Tissue contexts are extremely valuable when studying protein functions and their associated phenotypes. Recently, the study of proteins in tissue contexts was greatly facilitated by the availability of thousands of tissue transcriptomes. To provide access to these data we developed the TissueNet integrative database that displays protein-protein interactions (PPIs) in tissue contexts. Through TissueNet, users can create tissue-sensitive network views of the PPI landscape of query proteins. Unlike other tools, TissueNet output networks highlight tissue-specific and broadly expressed proteins, as well as over- and under-expressed proteins per tissue. The TissueNet v.3 upgrade has a much larger dataset of proteins and PPIs, and represents 125 adult tissues and seven embryonic tissues. Thus, TissueNet provides an extensive, quantitative, and user-friendly interface to study the roles of human proteins in adulthood and embryonic stages. TissueNet v3 is freely available at https://netbio.bgu.ac.il/tissuenet3.

    Abstract Introduction: Eye tracking (ET) is a popular tool to study what factors affect the visual behaviour of surgical team members. To our knowledge, there have been no reviews to date that evaluate the broad use of ET in surgical research. This review aims to identify and assess the quality of this evidence, to synthesize how ET can be used to inform surgical practice, and to provide recommendations to improve future ET surgical studies.
    Methods: In line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a systematic literature review was conducted. An electronic search was performed in MEDLINE, Cochrane Central, Embase, and Web of Science databases up to September 2020. Included studies used ET to measure the visual behaviour of members of the surgical team during surgery or surgical tasks. The included studies were assessed by two independent reviewers.
    Results: A total of 7614 studies were identified, and 111 were included for data extraction. Eleven applications were identified; the four most common were skill assessment (41%), visual attention assessment (22%), workload measurement (17%), and skills training (10%). A summary was provided of the various ways ET could be used to inform surgical practice, and three areas were identified for the improvement of future ET studies in surgery.
    Conclusions: This review provided a comprehensive summary of the various applications of ET in surgery and how ET could be used to inform surgical practice, including how to use ET to improve surgical education. The information provided in this review can also aid in the design and conduct of future ET surgical studies.

    Abstract Objective: To define the natural course and complications, and develop a model for predicting persistency when low-lying placenta (LLP) is detected early in pregnancy.
    Methods: This retrospective cohort study included women with LLP detected during an early anatomic scan performed at 13-16 weeks gestation. Additional transvaginal ultrasound exams were assessed for resolution at 22-24 weeks and 36-39 weeks. Patients were categorized as: Group 1-LLP resolved by the second-trimester scan, Group 2-LLP resolved by the third trimester, or Group 3-LLP persisted to delivery. Clinical and laboratory parameters, as well as maternal and neonatal complications, were compared. A linear support vector machine classification was used to define a prediction model for persistent LLP.
    Results: Among 236 pregnancies with LLP, 189 (80%) resolved by 22-24 weeks, 25 (10.5%) resolved by 36-39 weeks and 22 (9.5%) persisted until delivery. Second trimester hCG levels were higher the longer the LLP persisted (0.8 ± 0.7MoM vs. 1.13 + 0.4 MoM vs. 1.7 ± 1.5 MoM, adjusted
    Conclusions: Persistent LLP has unique clinical characteristics and more complications compared to cases that resolved. Persistency can be predicted with 90.3% accuracy, as early as the beginning of the second trimester by using a linear support vector machine classification model.

    Abstract Perioperative stress and inflammatory signaling can invigorate pro-metastatic molecular processes in patients' tumors, potentially worsening long-term survival. Yet, it is unknown whether pre-operative psychotherapeutic interventions can attenuate such effects. Herein, three weeks before surgery, forty women diagnosed with stage I-III invasive ductal/lobular breast carcinoma were randomized to a 6-week one-on-one psychological intervention (6 meetings with a medical psychologist and bi-weekly phone calls) versus standard nursing-staff-attention. The intervention protocol was individually tailored based on evaluation of patients' emotional, cognitive, physiological, and behavioral stress response-patterns, and also included psychoeducation regarding medical treatments and recruitment of social support. Resected primary tumors were subjected to whole-genome RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analyses, assessing a priori hypothesized cancer-relevant molecular signatures. Self-report questionnaires (BSI-18, Hope-18, MSPSS, and a stress-scale) were collected three (T1) and one (T2) week before surgery, a day before (T3) and after (T4) surgery, and three weeks (T5) and 3-months (T6) following surgery. The intervention reduced distress (GSI), depression, and somatization scores (BSI-18: p < 0.01, p < 0.05, p < 0.05; T5 vs. T1). Additionally, tumors from treated patients (vs. controls) showed: (i) decreased activity of transcription control pathways involved in adrenergic and glucocorticoid signaling (CREB, GR) (p < 0.001), pro-inflammatory signaling (NFkB) (p < 0.01), and pro-malignant signaling (ETS1, STAT and GATA families) (p < 0.001, p < 0.01, p < 0.005); (ii) increased M1 macrophage polarization (p < 0.05), and CD4

    Abstract After myocardial infarction (MI), the heart's reparative response to the ischemic insult and the related loss of cardiomyocytes involves cardiac fibrosis, in which the damaged tissue is replaced with a fibrous scar. Although the scar is essential to prevent ventricular wall rupture in the infarction zone, it expands over time to remote, non-infarct areas, significantly increasing the extent of fibrosis and markedly altering cardiac structure. Cardiac function in this scenario deteriorates, thereby increasing the probability of heart failure and the risk of death. Recent works have suggested that the matricellular protein periostin, known to be involved in fibrosis, is a candidate therapeutic target for the regulation of MI-induced fibrosis and remodeling. Different strategies for the genetic manipulation of periostin have been proposed previously, yet those works did not properly address the time dependency between periostin activity and cardiac fibrosis. Our study aimed to fill that gap in knowledge and fully elucidate the explicit timing of cellular periostin upregulation in the infarcted heart to enable the safer and more effective post-MI targeting of periostin-producing cells. Surgical MI was performed in C57BL/6J and BALB/c mice by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery. Flow cytometry analyses of cells derived from the infarcted hearts and quantitative real-time PCR of the total cellular RNA revealed that periostin expression increased during days 2-7 and peaked on day 7 post-infarct, regardless of mouse strain. The established timeline for cellular periostin expression in the post-MI heart is a significant milestone toward the development of optimal periostin-targeted gene therapy.

    Abstract The exploration of cathode and anode materials that enable reversible storage of mono and multivalent cations has driven extensive research on organic compounds. In this regard, polyimide (PI)-based electrodes have emerged as a promising avenue for the development of post-lithium energy storage systems. This review article provides a comprehensive summary of the syntheses, characterizations, and applications of PI compounds as electrode materials capable of hosting a wide range of cations. Furthermore, the review also delves into the advancements in PI based solid state batteries, PI-based separators, current collectors, and their effectiveness as polymeric binders. By highlighting the key findings in these areas, this review aims at contributing to the understanding and advancement of PI-based structures paving the way for the next generation of energy storage systems.
