    Abstract Background: It is widely believed that during the Great Depression (1929-1933) there was a rise in suicidal rates which was causally related to the increase in unemployment. There are no studies on the effect the Great Depression had on homicidal rates METHODS: The data concerning suicide, homicide, economic and climatic variables for the years 1900-1940 for the whole of the US were gathered from the US Center for Disease Control, the Maddison Project, the National Bureau of Economic Research and the National Climatic Data Center. Time Series Analysis was performed.
    Results: The results are inconclusive on the role of economic factors but preclude any role of climate on suicidal rates during the years 1900-1940 in the US. Suicidal rates might have a 24-years periodicity, however much longer time series are needed to confirm this. On the contrary they strongly suggest an effect of higher temperatures on homicidal rates after 1922.
    Conclusions: The results of the current study suggest a direct and clear effect of climate (higher temperatures) on the increasing homicidal rates in the US after 1922 but failed to establish a causal relationship between suicide rates and economic or climate variables. These should be considered together with increasing concerns on the possible effect of climate change on mental health.

    Abstract The treatment of bipolar depression is one of the most challenging needs in contemporary psychiatry. Currently, only quetiapine, olanzapine-fluoxetine combination, lurasidone, cariprazine, and recently lumateperone have been FDA-approved to treat this condition. The neurobiology of bipolar depression and the possible mechanistic targets of bipolar antidepressant therapy remain elusive. The current study investigated whether the pharmacodynamic properties of lumateperone fit into a previously developed model which was the first to be derived based on the strict combination of clinical and preclinical data. The authors performed a systematic review of the literature to identify the pharmacodynamic properties of lumateperone. The original model suggests that a constellation of effects on different receptors is necessary, but refinements, including the present study, suggest that the inhibition of the serotonin reuptake at the first level, the 5HT-2A blockade at the second level, and the norepinephrine alpha-1 receptors blockade at a third level in combination with D1 blockade contribute to the antidepressant effect in acute bipolar depression. The D2 blockade acts as a protective mechanism and reduces the risk of switching to mania/hypomania.

    Abstract Background: The current paper briefly summarizes the literature on the neurocognitive deficit and its treatment in BD patients.
    Methods: The material was chosen on the basis of previous systematic reviews the author has taken part in.
    Results: The data so far suggest that the deficit is qualitatively similar but quantitatively milder in comparison to schizophrenia, it is present already since the first episode, is weakly related to mood symptoms and somewhat stronger to psychotic symptoms, it probably determines much of the disability and treatment is problematic. This deficit is also present during periods of euthymia. The possible adverse effect of psychotropic medication is rather small if any at all and is confounded by the specific clinical symptoms, for which medication is used for their treatment. This is especially true concerning antipsychotics and psychotic symptoms. The origin and the etiopathogenesis of the core neurocognitive impairment remain elusive. The presence of a neurodegenerative and of a neurodevelopmental component has both data in favor and against and they are both the focus of debate.
    Conclusions: Treatment of the neurocognitive deficit and restoration of functioning is problematic. The data are limited and treatment options are few and with a weak overall effect. Pharmacological treatments, ECT and rTMS present some hard data, while the literature is inconclusive concerning psychotherapeutic interventions.
