    Abstract The race among countries and companies to develop efficacious vaccines and therapeutics for the COVID-19 is ongoing fast, with many trials underway. Among this, cell-based therapy is focused on moderate to severe phases of COVID-19, and there have been promising outcomes. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) due to their pro/anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory behavior, Natural Killer (NK) cells thanks to their capacity of lysing virus-infected cells and regulate the resulting immune response, Dendritic cells thanks to immunotherapy and cell-based vaccine engineering, SARS-CoV2-specific T cells due to stimulate and promote the immune system and MSC-derived exosomes because of cell-free therapy and beneficial manufacturing aspects, hold great promises for cell-based therapy applications for treating COVID-19 and similar viral infections. Moreover, recently, an innovative approach to COVID-19 based on engineered human MSC has been introduced, which is continuously evacuated and degraded by the body's immune system during the antigen recognition process. However, the economic situation of governments and nations, and the cost of therapeutics influence the clinical approaches to manage and exit from this pandemic. This summary describes cell-based clinical trials and the cost-utility aspects of cell therapy. In this regard, limited clinical studies have been reported; while, several clinical trials have been approved for starting phases 2 and 3 of their trials for treating COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Regarding the cost of cell therapy, many believe that the high cost of cell-based therapy will decrease substantially. Hence, there are hopes that cellular therapy can be approved soon for the treatment of viral diseases such as COVID-19. Graphical abstract.

    Abstract The application of herbicides in soil has been noted for its detrimental effect on the soil microbial community, crucial for various biochemical processes. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the impact of butisanstar and clopyralid herbicides, both individually and in combination at different dosage (recommended field dose (RFD), ½, 2 and 5-times RFD). The assessment focuses on soil basal respiration (SBR), cumulative microbial respiration (CMR), and the activities dehydrogenase (DH), catalase (CAT), urease, acid and alkaline phosphatases (Ac-P and Alk-P) enzymes, along with their variations on days 10, 30, 60, and 90 post-herbicide application. Results indicate that, although herbicides, even at lower doses of RFD, demonstrate inhibitory effects on DH, CAT, and microbial respiration, they paradoxically lead to a significant enhancement in urease and phosphatase activities, even at higher doses. The inhibitory/enhancing intensity varies based on herbicide type, incubation period, and dosage. Co-application of herbicides manifests synergistic effects compared to individual applications. The most notable inhibitory effects on DH, CAT, and SBR are observed on the 30th day, coinciding with the highest activities of urease and phosphatases on the same day. The persistent inability to restore respiration and enzyme activities to initial soil (control) levels emphasizes the lasting adverse and inhibitory effects of herbicides, especially clopyralid, over the long term. It becomes apparent that soil microorganisms require an extended duration to decompose and acclimate to the presence of herbicides. Consequently, these agrochemical compounds pose a potential risk to crucial biochemical processes, such as nutrient cycling, ultimately impacting crop production.

    Abstract The generally undesired effects of exocannabinoids on male reproduction include alterations in testicular cell proliferation and function, as well as apoptosis induction. However, this paradigm has been challenged by the ability of endocannabinoids to regulate reproductive function. The present study addresses these paradoxical facts by investigating the effects of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG) on mouse Sertoli cells' survival and apoptosis, with a mechanistic insight into Sertoli cell-based growth factors' production. The Mus musculus Sertoli cell line (TM4) was exposed to different concentrations of 2-AG, and cell viability was evaluated using MTT assay. Growth factors' gene and protein expressions were analyzed through RT-PCR and western blotting. 2-AG concentration dependently increased TM4 viability, with a slight increase starting at 0.0001 µM, a peak of 190% of the control level at 1 µM, and a decrease at 3 µM. Moreover, 2-AG paradoxically altered mRNA expression of caspase-3 and growth factors. Caspase-3 mRNA expression was down-regulated, and growth factors mRNA and protein expression were up-regulated when using a low concentration of 2-AG (1 μM). Opposite effects were observed by a higher concentration of 2-AG (3 μM). These paradoxical effects of 2-AG can be explained through the concept of hormesis. The results indicate the pivotal role of 2-AG in mediating Sertoli cell viability and apoptosis, at least in part, through altering growth factors secretion. Furthermore, they suggest the involvement of endocannabinoids in Sertoli cell-based physiological and pathological conditions and reflect the ability of abnormally elevated 2-AG to mimic the actions of exocannabinoids in reproductive dysfunction.

    Abstract Background: Among different adsorbents, natural and inorganic compounds such as diatomite are important and advantageous in terms of high efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and function in stabilizing heavy metals in the environment. Calendula officinalis, a plant known as a high accumulator of heavy metals, was cultivated in soil treated with varying concentrations of modified diatomite to demonstrate the efficiency of modified diatomite in stabilizating of heavy metals in soils, RESULTS: The modification of diatomite aimed to enhance Calendula officinalis adsorptive properties, particularly towards heavy metals such as lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn), Chromium (Cr), Nickle (Ni), and Copper (Cu), common contaminants in industrial soils. The experimental design included both control and treated soil samples, with assessments at regular intervals. Modified diatomite significantly decreased the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in contaminated soils except Zn, evidenced by decreased DTPA extractable heavy metals in soil and also heavy metal concentrations in plant tissues. Using 10% modified diatomite decreased 91% Pb and Cu, 78% Cr, and 79% Ni concentration of plants compared to the control treatment. The highest concentration of Zn in plant tissue was observed in 2.5% modified diatomite treatment. Remarkably, the application of modified diatomite also appeared to improve the nutrient profile of the soil, leading to enhanced uptake of key nutrients like phosphorus (P) 1.18%, and potassium (K) 79.6% in shoots and 82.3% in roots in Calendula officinalis. Consequently, treated plants exhibited improved growth characteristics, including shoots and roots height of 16.98% and 12.8% respectively, and shoots fresh and dry weight of 48.5% and 50.2% respectively., compared to those in untreated, contaminated soil.
    Conclusion: The findings suggest promising implications for using such amendments in ecological restoration and sustainable agriculture, particularly in areas impacted by industrial pollution.

    Abstract Background: Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is a serious anaerobic enteric pathogen causing necrotic enteritis (NE) in broiler chickens. Following the ban on antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feedstuffs, there has been a remarkable rise in occurrence of NE which resulted in considering alternative approaches, particularly vaccination. The objective of this work was to evaluate the recombinant Lactobacillus casei (L. casei) expressing the C-terminal domain of α-toxin from C. perfringens as a potential probiotic-based vaccine candidate to immunize the broiler chickens against NE.
    Results: The broiler chickens immunized orally with recombinant vaccine strain were significantly protected against experimental NE challenge, and developed specific serum anti-α antibodies. Additionally, the immunized birds showed higher body weight gains compared with control groups during the challenge experiment.
    Conclusions: The current study showed that oral immunization of broiler chickens with a safe probiotic-based vector vaccine expressing α-toxin from C. perfringens could provide protective immunity against NE in birds.

    Abstract Necrotic enteritis is a serious economical disease of poultry caused by Clostridium perfringens. NetB toxin of Clostridium perfringens is considered the causative agent of necrotic enteritis. Following the withdrawal of in-feed antibiotic growth promoters, there has been an urgent need to develop alternative approaches such as vaccination. Currently, there are no commercially available vaccines to control necrotic enteritis especially in broiler chickens as the target population. In the present study, we constructed a recombinant Lactobacillus casei strain expressing NetB protein of C. perfringens on the cell surface and used this probiotic-based vaccine strain to immunize broiler chickens orally against experimental induction of necrotic enteritis. The birds immunized with the oral vaccine strain were significantly protected against necrotic enteritis challenge and developed strong serum anti-NetB antibody responses to NetB protein. Furthermore, the immunized birds showed higher body weight gains during the challenge experiment compared with control birds. This study showed, for the first time, that a probiotic-based vector vaccine could be a promising vaccine candidate to provide protection against necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens. KEYPOINTS: • The probiotic L. casei carrying pT1NX-netB plasmid displayed NetB antigen on the cell surface. • The LC-NetB vaccine strain induced high anti-toxin antibody response in broiler chickens. • The LC-NetB vector vaccine provided significant protection against experimental NE challenge.

    Abstract Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a zoonosis with a worldwide distribution. This study is aimed to determine seroprevalence of Q fever and to identify the correlation between 8 risk factors for Q fever among students at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in the study in Iran. In the present study, 121 blood samples (serum) were taken from students and tested using indirect diagnostic ELISA kit. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and 95% confidence interval, Chi-square statistical test, and logistic regression. Results showed that 34.7% were positive from all the serum samples. Results of the regression test showed that correlation only between age (P-Value = 0.038) and sex (in women; P-Value = 0.05, OR = 2.22 95% CI = [1.00 - 4.90]) with positive serum titer of acute Q fever. According to the results, high seroprevalence of Q fever was observed among the veterinary students. This problem can be solved by taking more careful preventive measures against this disease in the training centers and veterinary students.

    Abstract BACKGROUND Giant coronary artery aneurysm (GCAA) is a rare disease, with an incidence of 0.02% in the general population. GCAA is defined as when the diameter of the coronary artery is more than 4 times the adjacent part or more than 8 mm. There are several causes of GCAA, with atherosclerosis being the most common. Patients with giant coronary artery aneurysms can be asymptomatic or develop chest pain, dyspnea, and palpitations. Complications of GCCA include myocardial infarction, thrombosis, and sudden death, so early treatment is necessary to prevent mortality. There is no standard surgical approach for a giant coronary artery aneurysm. CASE REPORT A 64-year-old man with hypertension, opium addiction, morbid obesity (body weight 151 kg and BMI 46), and benign prostate hyperplasia presented with a giant coronary aneurysm in coronary angiography. The patient underwent cardiac surgery, and a 42-mm coronary aneurysm was detected. The aneurysm had many orifices that opened to the left main coronary artery, left circumflex artery, LAD, the diagonal branch of the LAD, and the septal branch of the LAD. Aneurysmectomy and coronary artery bypass graft were successfully performed. CONCLUSIONS Giant coronary artery aneurysms are rare. Patients with giant coronary artery aneurysms may experience sudden death due to myocardial infarction and other cardiovascular complications due to ischemia. Because it is rare, there is no standard surgical approach for a giant coronary artery aneurysm. Further studies need to focus on standardized surgical management of patients with giant coronary artery aneurysms.

    Abstract The pace of advances in the world of science have created new opportunities and insights that give us new and more understanding of our nature and environment. Among the different fields of science, new medical sciences have drawn a great deal of attention among medical science researchers and the society. The hope for finding treatments for incurable diseases and further improvement of man's health is growing thanks to new medical technologies. Among the novel medical fields that have been extensively covered by medical and academic societies are cell therapy and gene therapy that are categorized under regenerative medicine. The present paper is an attempt to introduce the prospect of a curative cell-based therapy and new cellular and gene therapy drugs that have been recently approved by FDA (food and drug administration). Cellular and gene therapy are two very close fields of regenerative medicine and sciences which their targets and applications can be discussed together. What adds to the importance of this new field of science is the possibility to translate the hope for treatment of incurable diseases into actual treatments. What follows delves deeper into this new field of science and the drugs.
