Abstract The angular dependance of the transverse Raman scattering in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and its deuterated analogue (DKDP) for the entire range of crystal configurations suitable for laser beam polarization control has been investigated via experimental and modeling tools. This work was made possible by simultaneously rotating a spherical sample and the pump polarization to effectively measure the angular dependance of the transverse Raman signal in 360°. This novel method, which is applicable for the investigation of the Raman scattering in optically anisotropic materials, demonstrates that the spontaneous Raman scattering signal exhibits strong angular dependence that is modulated by depolarization and polarization rotation effects generated as the Raman signal traverses the material due to its birefringence. The results show that the total signal generated by the pump beam is the sum of the signals generated by the two components that have polarization parallel and orthogonal to the optic axis. The peak signal intensity, which is of importance for high-power laser applications, depends on the orientation of the optic axis and can vary by a factor of about 2. The excellent agreement between experimental data and modeling results validates the associated models and enables one to consider optimal crystal cut designs for specific applications.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to identify sex-specific biomarkers for ischemic stroke (IS) prophylaxis in elderly individuals.
Materials and methods: The GSE22255 dataset for elderly individuals with IS was retrieved from the gene expression omnibus database. Thereafter, gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were performed, as well as gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). Furthermore, protein-protein interactions (PPIs) were explored using the STRING database, and to screen central genes from the Cytoscape PPI network, corresponding to peripheral blood samples from elderly individuals, we used the molecular complex detection plug-in and cytoHubba. Moreover, a Venn diagram was used to visualize the key genes common among elderly women and men with IS. Statistical analysis was also performed, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to evaluate the specificity and sensitivity of the prediction of IS in the elderly.
Results: Compared with the healthy controls, in elderly women with IS, 511 biological process (BP) terms, 16 molecular function (MF) terms, and 34 KEGG terms were significantly enriched, whereas in the elderly men with IS, 681 BP terms, 12 MF terms, and 44 KEGG terms were enriched. The GSEA revealed 99 and 140 significantly enriched gene sets in elderly women and men with IS, respectively. Furthermore, in the PPI network, 10 hub genes for each sex with high specificity and sensitivity were identified using ROC curves.
Conclusions: Ten genes for each sex with significant differential expression were also identified in individuals with IS. The novel sex-specific gene targets may be promising diagnostic or prognostic markers and potential therapeutic targets for IS in the elderly.

Abstract There is no consensus on the true meaning of clinical regenerative endodontics, and there is confusion over the concept and the term. Commonly used terms include revitalization and revascularization. The clinical methods for endodontic revitalization procedures and the tissue engineering concept differ depending on whether there is exogenous delivery of cells - called cell therapy, or not. Here, in this review, the difference is clarified by emphasizing the correct terminology: cell-free versus cell-based regenerative endodontic therapy (CF-RET versus CB-RET). The revitalization procedures practised clinically do not fit into the modern tissue engineering concepts of pulp regeneration but can be categorized as CF-RET. The modern tissue engineering concept in pulp regeneration is a CB-RET, which so far is at the clinical trial stage. However, histological examination of teeth following regenerative endodontic treatments reveals healing with repair derived from stem cells that originate from the periodontal, bone and other tissues. The aim of regenerative endodontics is regeneration of the pulp-dentine complex. This review discusses why CF-RET is unlikely to regenerate a pulp-dentine complex with current protocols. The American Association of Endodontists and the European Society of Endodontology have not yet recommended autologous stem cell transplantation (CB-RERT) which aspires for regeneration. Therefore, an understanding of the concept, term, difficulties and differences in current protocols is important for the clinician. However, rather than being discouraged that ideal regeneration has not been achieved to date, repair can be an acceptable outcome in clinical regenerative endodontics as it has also been accepted in medicine. Repair should also be considered in the context that resolution of the clinical signs/symptoms of pulp necrosis/apical periodontitis is generally reliably obtained in clinical regenerative endodontics.

Abstract A specialized experimental configuration was developed to allow for more-accurate characterization of the spontaneous Raman scattering properties in anisotropic materials. This need stems from the challenges, arising from the complexity of light propagation, in obtaining accurate measurements of the angular dependence of the Raman scattering cross section in birefringent materials.
