Abstract Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) has predominantly been performed for brain tumors or head and neck cancers. Although BNCT is known to be applicable to breast cancer, it has only been performed in a few cases involving thoracic region irradiation with reactor-based BNCT systems. Thus, there are very few reports on the effects of BNCT on the thoracic region and no reports of BNCT for breast cancer with accelerator-based BNCT systems. This paper introduces the world's first clinical study employing an accelerator-based BNCT system targeting recurrent breast cancer after radiation therapy. We aim to assess the efficacy and safety of BNCT, focusing on the dose response in the thoracic region, especially concerning the potential for radiation pneumonitis. Preliminary findings from the first three cases indicate no evidence of radiation pneumonitis within three months post treatment. This study not only establishes a foundation for novel breast cancer treatment options but also contributes significantly to the field of BNCT in the thoracic region.

Abstract Various things propagate through the medium of individuals. Some individuals follow the others and take the states similar to their states a small number of time steps later. In this paper, we study the problem of estimating the state propagation order of individuals from the real-valued state sequences of all the individuals. We propose a method of constructing a state propagation graph from individuals' time series of observed states. The propagation order estimated by our proposed method is demonstrated to be significantly more accurate than that by a baseline method (optimal constant delay model) for our synthetic datasets, and also to be consistent with visually recognizable propagation orders for the dataset of Japanese stock price time series and biological cell firing state sequences.

Abstract We propose an alignment-based average delay time estimation algorithm between two time series in the propagation of time-varying delay. Though the number of the minimum cost alignments may be exponential in the length of the time series, the proposed algorithm takes account of all such alignments, and as a post-alignment process, it runs in time linear in the number of the nodes in the minimum cost alignment graph, which is at most the length squared. The efficiency of our algorithm is confirmed through numerical experiments compared to the naive enumeration algorithm using recursive calls to traverse the graph.

Abstract The proinsulin-to-C-peptide (PI:C) ratio is an index applied during the early stage of pancreatic β-cell dysfunction. The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics associated with the PI:C ratio to discuss pancreatic β-cell dysfunction progression during the natural course of type 2 diabetes and its relationship with glycemic management. This multicenter, prospective observational study included 272 outpatients with type 2 diabetes. Continuous glucose monitoring was performed and fasting blood samples were collected and analyzed. We identified the clinical factors associated with the PI:C ratio by multiple regression analysis. The mean age of the cohort was 68.0 years, mean hemoglobin A1c 7.1% (54 mmol/mol), and mean body mass index 24.9 kg/m

Abstract Since inorganic nanoparticles have unique properties that differ from bulk materials, their material applications have attracted attention in various fields. In order to utilize inorganic nanoparticles for functional materials, they must be dispersed without agglomeration. Therefore, the surfaces of inorganic nanoparticles are typically modified with organic ligands to improve their dispersibility. Nevertheless, the relationship between the tail group structure in organic ligands and the dispersibility of inorganic nanoparticles in organic solvents remains poorly understood. We previously developed amphiphilic ligands that consist of ethylene glycol chains and alkyl chains to disperse inorganic nanoparticles in a variety of organic solvents. However, the structural requirements for amphiphilic ligands to "flexibly" disperse nanoparticles in less polar to polar solvents are still unclear. Here, we designed and synthesized several phosphonic acid ligands for structure‒function relationship studies of flexdispersion. Dynamic light scattering analysis and visible light transmittance measurements revealed that the ratio of alkyl/ethylene glycol chains in organic ligands alone does not determine the dispersibility of the nanoparticles in organic solvents, but the arrangement of the individual chains also has an effect. From a practical application standpoint, it is preferable to design ligands with ethylene glycol chains on the outside relative to the particle surface.
