Abstract Objective: To generate normative data for the Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (M-WCST) in Spanish-speaking pediatric populations.
Method: The sample consisted of 4,373 healthy children from nine countries in Latin America (Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Puerto Rico) and Spain. Each participant was administered the M-WCST as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. Number of categories, perseverative errors, and total error scores were normed using multiple linear regressions and standard deviations of residual values. Age, age2, sex, and mean level of parental education (MLPE) were included as predictors in the analyses.
Results: The final multiple linear regression models indicated main effects for age on all scores, such that the number of categories correct increased and total number of perseverative errors and total number of errors decrease linearly as a function of age. Age2 had a significant effect in Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, and Spain for numbers of categories; a significant effect for number of perseverative errors in Chile, Cuba, Mexico, and Spain; and a significant effect for number of total errors in Chile, Cuba, Peru, and Spain. Models showed an effect for MLPE in Cuba (total errors), Ecuador (categories and total errors), Mexico (all scores), Paraguay (perseverative errors and total error), and Spain (categories and total errors). Sex affected number of total errors for Ecuador.
Conclusions: This is the largest Spanish-speaking pediatric normative study in the world, and it will allow neuropsychologists from these countries to have a more accurate way to interpret the M-WCST with pediatric populations.

Abstract Sandwich structures were fabricated by a vacuum deposition method using MPc (M = Cu, Zn), with a Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivative, and Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) and aluminum electrodes. The structure and morphology of the deposited films were studied by IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The absorption spectra of TTF derivative-MPc (M = Cu, Zn) thin films deposited at room temperature were recorded in the spectral range 200-1000 nm. The optical band gap of the thin films was determined from the (αhν)(1/2) vs. hν plot. The direct-current (DC) electrical properties of the glass/ITO/TTFderiv-MPc (M = Cu, Zn)/Al structures were also investigated. Changes in conductivity of the derivative-TTF-enriched Pc compounds suggest the formation of alternative paths for carrier conduction. At low voltages, forward current density obeys an ohmic I-V relationship; at higher voltages, conduction is mostly due to a space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC) mechanism.

Abstract Mepraia species are hematophagous insects and the most important wild vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease in southeastern South America. Because the domestic Triatoma infestans is already controlled, the transmission of different T. cruzi discrete typing units (DTUs) by Mepraia species deserves attention. Our aim is to gather information on the diversity of T. cruzi DTUs circulating in natural insect populations. Two groups of naturally infected bugs 21 Mepraia gajardoi and 26 Mepraia spinolai were followed-up after two or more laboratory feedings by means of minicircle-PCR assays to evaluate the composition of four T. cruzi DTUs by hybridization tests. Fluctuations from positive T. cruzi detection to negative and the converse, as well as single to mixed infections with different T. cruzi DTUs and the opposite were frequent observations after laboratory feeding in both Mepraia species. Single and mixed infections with more than two T. cruzi DTUs were detected after the first feeding; however mainly mixed infections prevailed after the second feeding. Laboratory feeding on three or more occasions resulted in a decreasing trend of the parasite burden. In a comparison with 28 infected and fed M. gajardoi collected one year before from the same vector colony T. cruzi DTUs composition changed, indicating that temporal variations occur in T. cruzi. Natural populations of Mepraia species can transmit complex mixtures T. cruzi DTUs which fluctuate over time after feeding, with a tendency to eliminate the parasitism after prolonged feeding.

Abstract Hepatitis B is a parenterally and sexually transmitted infection. Vaccination for the disease is highly effective, and its inclusion in Spain as part of a systematic and universal schedule for newborns has led to a significant decrease of incidence in the national population. However, the number of inmates born in other countries some from endemic areas of HBV infection -, the mechanisms of transmission and lack of vaccination in third world countries mean that its prevalence in the prison population is higher than in the general population. These institutions therefore play an essential role in detecting and managing hepatitis B. In this paper, the situation of hepatitis B in prisons is reviewed and recommendations are proposed to optimize its control.

Abstract In this work, the synthesis of new materials formed from metallic phthalocyanines (Pcs) and double potassium salt from 1,8-dihydroxianthraquinone is reported. The newly synthesized materials were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), infrared (IR) and Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The powder and thin-film samples of the synthesized materials, deposited by vacuum thermal evaporation, show the same intra-molecular bonds as in the IR spectroscopy studies, which suggests that the thermal evaporation process does not alter these bonds. The effect of temperature on conductivity and electrical conduction mechanism was measured in the thin films (approximately 137 nm thickness). They showed a semiconductor-like behaviour with an optical activation energy arising from indirect transitions of 2.15, 2.13 and 3.6eV for the C(46)H(22)N(8)O(4)KFe, C(46)H(22)N(8)O(4)KPb and C(46)H(22)N(8)O(4)KCo thin films.
