    Abstract Citrus sinensis by-products are a promising source of neuroprotective molecules. In this study, a pressurized liquid extract of Citrus by-products (PLE100) has been extensively characterized, and its neuroprotective capacity tested in the Caenorhabditis elegans strain CL4176, a validated in vivo model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). More than 450 compounds have been annotated in the extract, being triacylglycerols (TGs), stigmastanes, fatty acids (FAs) and carbohydrates the most abundant. The results demonstrate that worms PLE100-treated are significantly protected in a dose-dependent manner against the Aβ-peptide paralysis toxicity. The RNA-Seq data showed an alteration of 294 genes mainly related to the stress response defense along with genes involved in the lipid transport and metabolism. Moreover, the comprehensive metabolomics study allowed the identification of 818 intracellular metabolites, of which 54 were significantly altered (mainly lipids). The integration of these and previous results provides with new evidences of the protection mechanisms of this promising extract.

    Abstract In this study, an exhaustive chemical characterization of a Dunaliella salina (DS) microalga extract obtained using supercritical fluids has been performed, and its neuroprotective capacity has been evaluated in vivo using an Alzheimer's disease (AD) transgenic model of Caenorhabditis elegans (strain CL4176). More than 350 compounds were annotated in the studied DS extract, with triacylglycerols, free fatty acids (FAs), carotenoids, apocarotenoids and glycerol being the most abundant. DS extract significantly protects C. elegans in a dose-dependent manner against Aβ-peptide paralysis toxicity, after 32 h, 53% of treated worms at 50 µg/mL were not paralyzed. This concentration was selected to further evaluate the transcriptomics and metabolomics changes after 26 h by using advanced analytical methodologies. The RNA-Seq data showed an alteration of 150 genes, mainly related to the stress and detoxification responses, and the retinol and lipid metabolism. The comprehensive metabolomics and lipidomics analyses allowed the identification of 793 intracellular metabolites, of which 69 were significantly altered compared to non-treated control animals. Among them, different unsaturated FAs, lysophosphatidylethanolamines, nucleosides, dipeptides and modified amino acids that have been previously reported as beneficial during AD progression, were assigned. These compounds could explain the neuroprotective capacity observed, thus, providing with new evidences of the protection mechanisms of this promising extract.

    Abstract Study objective: The objective of this anatomical study was to investigate the distribution of a solution administered using the Clavipectoral Fascia Plane Block (CPB) technique in a series of cadaveric models with midshaft clavicular fractures. The study aimed to address the knowledge gap regarding the impact of clavicular fractures on the distribution pattern of the CPB-administered solution.
    Design: Observational cadaveric study.
    Setting: The research was conducted in the laboratory setting of the University of Barcelona, adhering to the institution's ethical guidelines and standards.
    Patients: Five unembalmed human cadavers were used, generating ten clavicle samples.
    Interventions: A postmortem fracture was induced in the middle third of the clavicle using a blunt-edged hammer, simulating a midshaft clavicular fracture.
    Measurements: Anatomical dissection was performed in three layers: the superficial muscle plane, deep muscle plane, and clavicular periosteum plane. Dye staining with methylene blue was utilized to assess the distribution pattern.
    Main results: In the superficial muscular plane, methylene blue was observed in the deltoid (100%), pectoralis major (100%), sternocleidomastoid (SCM) (70%), and trapezius muscles (100%). Conversely, the deep muscular plane, including the subclavius muscle, pectoralis minor, and Clavipectoral Fascia (CPF), exhibited no staining. At the clavicular periosteum plane, methylene blue distributed predominantly to the antero-superior region (57.3%), with a minimal impact on the postero-inferior area (6.5%).
    Conclusions: The study reveals that the presence of a midshaft clavicular fracture does not significantly alter the diffusion pattern of the CPB-administered solution, maintaining a consistent distribution in both intact and fractured clavicle models.

    Abstract Introduction: Aim: to describe the feeding and growth patterns of preterm-born children at preschool age, considering feeding problems based on behaviours and skills, diet quality and parental feeding practices. Methods: a cross-sectional study was performed on preterm children born in Asturias (Spain) in 2016 (n = 94). When preterm-born children reached 3-4 years of age their families were asked to complete the Behavioral Pediatrics Feeding Assessment Scale and a food frequency questionnaire to identify possible feeding problems and assess diet quality (KIDMED index), respectively. Self-reported anthropometric data were also collected to assess weight growth. Electronic health records were reviewed to gather gestational and neonatal clinical data. Results: feeding problems were found in 7.4 % of children and 20.2 % of parents. According to the KIDMED index, 25.5 % of children had a high-quality diet. Feeding problems were higher in children born before 32 weeks of gestation, and decreased in frequency as the gestational age increased (p = 0.030). No differences were found in parental feeding practices (p = 0.455) or diet quality according to gestational age (p = 0.399), but body weight at 3-4 years was lower in preterm-born children (p = 0.015). Conclusions: feeding patterns of preterm-born children were suitable at the age of 3-4 years, but diet quality was moderate to poor in the majority of children. Follow-up of very preterm children beyond 3-4 years of age becomes necessary as they displayed more feeding problems and lower body weight.

    Abstract This methodological work demonstrates the potential of metabolomic approaches based on liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-ESI(+/-)-HRMS) to investigate the antiproliferative capacity of underexplored biomasses (e.g., Passiflora mollissima seeds and Physalys peruviana calyx), by evaluating the molecular changes induced at the metabolite expression levels on HT-29 human colon cancer cells. This protocol describes in detail the optimal conditions to obtain bioactive extracts by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), the experimental procedure to grow and treat HT-29 human colon cancer cells and CCD-18Co normal human colon fibroblasts with the target extracts, the metabolites extraction from the cytosolic fraction, and subsequent metabolomic fingerprinting. After treatment for 48 and 72 h, the viability of HT-29 colon cancer cells is markedly affected, and metabolites can be extracted for investigation. Following the proposed metabolomic data analysis and interpretation workflow, altered cellular redox homeostasis, as well as inactivation or dysfunction on other metabolic pathways, constitutes valuable biological information to understand the mechanisms underlying the antiproliferative effect.

    Abstract Obesity is a pathology that is increasing in incidence globally and threatens public health. Currently, one of its most effective treatments is bariatric surgery, which has shown the best long-term results. One of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in this area is laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) or vertical sleeve. It is a restrictive technique that has had positive results in weight loss. Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a strange condition with a low incidence in which thoracic and abdominal organs are on the opposite side of the already-known anatomic site, seen on a sagittal plane. The high demand for laparoscopic bariatric surgeries predisposes surgeons to find rare congenital anomalies in patients. Low prevalence and the anatomic mirror image condition may be challenging even for expert surgeons. Medical teams need to have knowledge of these cases and adjust the technique and procedure to complete the surgery without complications. We present a SIT case successfully treated with LSG in a male patient in Mexico.
