Abstract Nitrenium ions are important reactive intermediates participating in the synthetic chemistry and biological processes. Little is known about triplet phenyl nitrenium ions regarding their reactivity, lifetimes, spectroscopic features, and electronic configurations, and no ground state triplet nitrenium ion has been directly detected. Abstract Real-time imaging of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) provides an opportunity for detailed investigation of retinal development, disease mechanisms, and the evaluation of interventions affecting ocular structures. Here we use a transgenic model to describe a step-by-step protocol for visualizing RGC survival in real-time by using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (cSLO).

Abstract Lilii Bulbus, the bulb of tiger lily, has anti-oxidant and anti-tumorigenic properties. However, the effects of Lilii Bulbus on learning, memory, and hippocampal neurogenesis remain unknown. This study investigated whether water extract of Lilii Bulbus (WELB) affects memory ability and hippocampal neurogenesis. Behavioral analyses (Morris water maze and passive avoidance test), immunohistochemistry, cell proliferation assay, and immunoblot analysis were performed. WELB (50 and 100 mg/kg; for 14 days) enhanced memory retention and spatial memory in normal mice as well as in scopolamine-treated mice with memory deficits. Furthermore, the administration of WELB significantly increased the number of proliferating cells and surviving newborn cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus in normal mice. We found that WELB has a pro-neurogenic effect by increasing the activation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (MEK/ERK) in the hippocampus. Moreover, we confirmed that WELB (100 and 200 μg/ml) significantly increased NE-4 C and primary embryonic NSCs proliferation. Inhibition/knockdown of MEK/ERK blocked WELB-induced MEK/ERK phosphorylation and NSCs proliferation. Hence, MEK/ERK activation was required in WELB-induced NSCs proliferation. Our study demonstrates the first evidence for WELB promoting hippocampal neurogenesis and memory; pro-neurogenic activity may enhance brain plasticity, with implications for treating neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has rapidly spread worldwide. Most of the infected patients present with respiratory symptoms and acute lung damage. Here, we present three cases of patients with COVID-19 disease whose main clinical manifestations are gastrointestinal symptoms. In our first case, we present a COVID-19 patient with histologic findings associated with ischemic necrosis of the small bowel. In the second and third cases, we demonstrate acute cholecystitis and histology showing microvascular thrombosis. These three cases highlight the ischemic and thrombotic changes seen in the setting of COVID-19 infection without classic respiratory symptoms, with resulting severe gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disease requiring surgical management. Although the bile or stool viral load was not tested in these patients, the small intestine and gallbladder were infected with SARS-CoV-2, most likely via the epithelial angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor.

Abstract The 3',5'-dimethoxybenzoin (DMB) system has been widely investigated as a photoremovable protecting group (PRPG) for the elimination of various functional groups and has been applied in many fields. The photolysis of DMB fluoride leads to a highly efficient photocyclization-deprotection reaction, resulting in a high yield of 3',5'-dimethoxybenzofuran (DMBF) in a MeCN solution, while there is a competitive reaction that produces DMB in an aqueous solution. The yield of DMB increased as the volume ratio of water increased. To understand the solvent effect of the photolysis of selected DMB-based compounds, a combination of femtosecond to nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopies (fs-TA and ns-TA), nanosecond time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy (ns-TR
