Abstract The frequency of concurrent thyroid cancer in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) varies. While the pathological association between thyroid and parathyroid disorders is frequently noted, the co-occurrence of parathyroid adenoma and papillary thyroid cancer is exceptionally rare. Furthermore, an ectopic parathyroid adenoma in the retropharyngeal space is exceedingly rare. Therefore, anatomical variations through the utilization of relevant diagnostic tools play a crucial role in guiding decisions pertaining to clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, surgical interventions, and operative strategies for parathyroid tumors. We present a case of a 51-year-old female patient with papillary thyroid carcinoma in the right thyroid lobe and an ectopic parathyroid adenoma in the retropharyngeal space confirmed through surgical intervention. The elevated preoperative levels of serum calcium and parathyroid hormone, along with low serum phosphate, returned to normal ranges after surgery. This case sheds light on the unusual occurrence of an ectopic parathyroid adenoma in the retropharyngeal region within a thyroid cancer patient, providing valuable insights into the realm of thyroid malignancies.

Abstract Aim: To assess the effectiveness of the Clinical Nurse Educator Support Project and offer valuable insights for supporting nursing education.
Background: Allocating clinical nursing educators is crucial for supporting novice nurses' transition into the clinical setting and improving their performance.
Introduction: In 2019, the Ministry of Health and Welfare in South Korea implemented the Clinical Nurse Educator Support Project, which involves governmental financial support for the employment of clinical nurse educators.
Methods: This study employed a repeated cross-sectional design to assess the project outcomes. Following the framework of the Kirkpatrick Evaluation Model, secondary data from annual self-program evaluation reports were analyzed to assess program satisfaction, clinical adaptation, and turnover rates of novice nurses. The "Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist" guided the reporting of the study.
Results: The project played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of nursing education. Novice nurses' program satisfaction and clinical adaptation consistently remained high or exhibited an increase. The project led to a decrease in turnover rate among novice nurses, while the coronavirus 2019 pandemic resulted in increased turnover rates due to limited clinical practice opportunities for nursing students.
Conclusion: Government support for clinical nurse educators has positively impacted the institutionalization of nursing education. The pressing need is to prioritize not only the enhancement of nursing education quality and the improvement of nurses' working conditions but also the development of healthcare policies and programs to effectively respond to unforeseen challenges and crises.
Implications for nursing policy: Government and healthcare institutions must collaborate to strengthen clinical education, crucial for novice nurses' clinical adaptation. Prioritizing the improvement of nursing education quality and nurses' working conditions is essential. Continuous research and evaluation of the Clinical Nurse Educator Support Project is imperative to assess its impact and make necessary adjustments.

Abstract Objectives: The present retrospective study reviewed the association among sarcopenia, myosteatosis, and overall survival (OS) in patients with postoperative colorectal cancer (CRC) with regard to age.
Design: A retrospective study was conducted with a five-year follow-up.
Setting: Data from all patients with CRC, who underwent surgery between February 2005 and April 2014, were reviewed.
    Participants: Data from 1053 patients (622 male [59.1%], 431 female [40.9%]; mean [± SD] age, 62.8 ± 11.8 years) were analyzed.
Measurements: Patients were divided into three groups according to age: ≤50, 51-74, and ≥75 years. Data, including perioperative parameters, and the presence of sarcopenia and myosteatosis according to skeletal muscle index (SMI) and skeletal muscle radiodensity (SMD), respectively, were collected. Sarcopenia was evaluated using CT by calculating the SMI at the L3 level by dividing the area of the skeletal muscle by height squared (cm
Results: Patient allocation according to age group was as follows: ≤50 years, n = 147 (14.0%); 51-74 years, n = 742 (70.5%); and ≥75 years, n = 164 (15.5%). The presence of sarcopenia and myosteatosis were statistically significant with increasing age (P = 0.004 and P < 0.001, respectively). The 51-74 years age group exhibited a significant association in OS for myosteatosis (P < 0.001) while the ≥75 years group was significantly associated with sarcopenia (P = 0.04) with regard to OS. Multivariable analysis also revealed a statistically significant association between myosteatosis in the 51-74 years age group (P = 0.033) and sarcopenia in the ≥75 years age group (P = 0.005) even when adjusted for recurrence status.
Conclusion: Different age groups exhibited significantly variable skeletal muscle indices. Although an abundance of irrefutable results demonstrated a correlation between CT-defined sarcopenia, myosteatosis, and clinical prognosis, data regarding age-dependent correlations are scarce. Results of this study demonstrated that sarcopenia and myosteatosis did not influence the prognosis of young patients with postoperative CRC (≤50 years of age), inferring the existence of significantly different skeletal muscle-related parameters according to age. Patients over 75 years of age showed significant association with sarcopenia while those in the 51-74 age group displayed significant link to myosteatosis. Clinicians should consider the impact of sarcopenia and myosteatosis on patient prognosis and should also be aware that the effect may differ according to patient age.

Abstract The conventional crow search (CS) algorithm is a swarm-based metaheuristic algorithm that has fewer parameters, is easy to apply to problems, and is utilized in various fields. However, it has a disadvantage, as it is easy for it to fall into local minima by relying mainly on exploitation to find approximations. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the advanced crow search (ACS) algorithm, which improves the conventional CS algorithm and solves the global optimization problem. The ACS algorithm has three differences from the conventional CS algorithm. First, we propose using dynamic <semantics> A P </semantics> (awareness probability) to perform exploration of the global region for the selection of the initial population. Second, we improved the exploitation performance by introducing a formula that probabilistically selects the best crows instead of randomly selecting them. Third, we improved the exploration phase by adding an equation for local search. The ACS algorithm proposed in this paper has improved exploitation and exploration performance over other metaheuristic algorithms in both unimodal and multimodal benchmark functions, and it found the most optimal solutions in five engineering problems.

Abstract This study developed a method for quantifying eight short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in mouse fecal samples using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with triple quadrupole gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Furthermore, significant factors affecting SCFA analysis, including SPME fiber selection, pH, salting-out agent, and sample collection time, were investigated. Contrary to previous studies, we found that the CAR/PDMS fiber had the highest extraction efficiency for all SCFAs. The optimal extraction efficiency was observed at pH 2.0, particularly for low-molecular-weight SCFAs. NaH

Abstract Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved tremendous success in solving complex classification problems. Motivated by this success, there have been proposed various compression methods for downsizing the CNNs to deploy them on resource-constrained embedded systems. However, a new type of vulnerability of compressed CNNs known as the adversarial examples has been discovered recently, which is critical for security-sensitive systems because the adversarial examples can cause malfunction of CNNs and can be crafted easily in many cases. In this paper, we proposed a compression framework to produce compressed CNNs robust against such adversarial examples. To achieve the goal, our framework uses both pruning and knowledge distillation with adversarial training. We formulate our framework as an optimization problem and provide a solution algorithm based on the proximal gradient method, which is more memory-efficient than the popular ADMM-based compression approaches. In experiments, we show that our framework can improve the trade-off between adversarial robustness and compression rate compared to the existing state-of-the-art adversarial pruning approach.
