Abstract Purpose of review: Experimental intestinal transplantation (ITx ) has generated invaluable knowledge that has ultimately benefited the clinical activity. Herein, we appraise the recent publications pertaining to experimental ITx and highlight the main current research topics.
Recent findings: During the recent years, ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) and Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) have gradually replaced acute rejection as the main research topic. New additives to established preservation solutions and relatively novel approaches such as luminal interventions during cold storage may prolong the storage time and alleviate IRI. High donor age does not seem to worsen preservation injury. The ischemic susceptibility seems to differ between species, which may impact the translatability of the experimental findings. A new experimental model of modified multivisceral transplantation including the donor spleen may offer a new tool with which to study GVHD, besides the classical Lewis-Brown Norway rat combination. Flushing the graft with fludarabine may mitigate GVHD in rats. T-cell activation inhibitor-mitochondrial was downregulated in the peripheral blood leukocytes before other signs of acute and severe chronic rejection could be observed.
Summary: Experimental research in ITx has largely shifted focus from acute rejection to IRI and GVHD. Several lines of research have matured toward clinical translation, yet no breakthrough is imminent.

Abstract Intestinal transplantation (ITx) remains a lifesaving option for patients suffering from irreversible intestinal failure and complications from total parenteral nutrition. Since its inception, it became obvious that intestinal grafts are highly immunogenic, due to their high lymphoid load, the abundance in epithelial cells and constant exposure to external antigens and microbiota. This combination of factors and several redundant effector pathways makes ITx immunobiology unique. To this complex immunologic situation, which leads to the highest rate of rejection among solid organs (>40%), there is added the lack of reliable non-invasive biomarkers, which would allow for frequent, convenient and reliable rejection surveillance. Numerous assays, of which several were previously used in inflammatory bowel disease, have been tested after ITx, but none have shown sufficient sensibility and/or specificity to be used alone for diagnosing acute rejection. Herein, we review and integrate the mechanistic aspects of graft rejection with the current knowledge of ITx immunobiology and summarize the quest for a noninvasive biomarker of rejection.

Abstract We investigate the possibility of encoding multiple solutions of a problem in a single chromosome. The best solution encoded in an individual will represent (will provide the fitness of) that individual. In order to obtain some benefits the chromosome decoding process must have the same complexity as in the case of a single solution in a chromosome. Three Genetic Programming techniques are analyzed for this purpose: Multi Expression Programming, Linear Genetic Programming, and Infix Form Genetic Programming. Numerical experiments show that encoding multiple solutions in a chromosome greatly improves the search process.

Abstract A new model for evolving Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) is proposed in this paper. The model is based on the Multi Expression Programming (MEP) technique. Each MEP chromosome encodes an evolutionary pattern that is repeatedly used for generating the individuals of a new generation. The evolved pattern is embedded into a standard evolutionary scheme that is used for solving a particular problem. Several evolutionary algorithms for function optimization are evolved by using the considered model. The evolved evolutionary algorithms are compared with a human-designed Genetic Algorithm. Numerical experiments show that the evolved evolutionary algorithms can compete with standard approaches for several well-known benchmarking problems.

Abstract A genetic programming (GP) variant called traceless genetic programming (TGP) is proposed in this paper. TGP is a hybrid method combining a technique for building individuals and a technique for representing individuals. The main difference between TGP and other GP techniques is that TGP does not explicitly store the evolved computer programs. Two genetic operators are used in conjunction with TGP: crossover and insertion. TGP is applied for evolving digital circuits for the even-parity problem. Numerical experiments show that TGP outperforms standard GP with several orders of magnitude.

Abstract An evolutionary approach for computing the winning strategy for Nim-like games is proposed in this paper. The winning strategy is computed by using the Multi Expression Programming (MEP) technique - a fast and efficient variant of the Genetic Programming (GP). Each play strategy is represented by a mathematical expression that contains mathematical operators (such as +, -, *, mod, div, and , or, xor, not) and operands (encoding the current game state). Several numerical experiments for computing the winning strategy for the Nim game are performed. The computational effort needed for evolving a winning strategy is reported. The results show that the proposed evolutionary approach is very suitable for computing the winning strategy for Nim-like games.

Abstract A new model for evolving Evolutionary Algorithms is proposed in this paper. The model is based on the Linear Genetic Programming (LGP) technique. Every LGP chromosome encodes an EA which is used for solving a particular problem. Several Evolutionary Algorithms for function optimization, the Traveling Salesman Problem, and the Quadratic Assignment Problem are evolved by using the considered model. Numerical experiments show that the evolved Evolutionary Algorithms perform similarly and sometimes even better than standard approaches for several well-known benchmarking problems.
