Abstract The accumulation of hydrophobic bile acids in the liver is considered to play a pivotal role in the induction of apoptosis of hepatocytes during cholestasis. Thus, factors that affect apoptosis may be used to modulate liver fibrosis. Yin-Chen-Hao-Tang (YCHT) decoctions have been recognised as a hepatoprotective agent for jaundice and various types of liver diseases. We used an experimental rat model of bile-duct ligation (BDL) to test whether YCHT plays a regulatory role in the pathogenesis of hepatic apoptosis. BDL-plus-YCHT groups received 250 or 500 mg kg (-1) YCHT by gavage once daily for 27 days. YCHT significantly ameliorated the portal hypertensive state and serum TNF-alpha compared with the vehicle-treated control group. In BDL-plus-YCHT-treated rats, hepatic glutathione contents were significantly higher than than in BDL-only rats. BDL caused a prominent liver apoptosis that was supported by an increase in Bax and cytochrome c protein and increased expression of Bax and Bcl-2 messenger RNA. The normalising effect of YCHT on expression of Bax and Bcl-2 mRNA was dependent on the dose of YCHT, 500 mg kg (-1) having the greater effect on both Bax and Bcl-2 of mRNA levels. Additionally, YCHT treatment down-regulated both hepatic caspase-3 and -8 activities of BDL rats. This study demonstrates the anti-apoptotic properties of YCHT and suggests a potential application of YCHT in the clinical management of hepatic disease resulting from biliary obstruction.

Abstract In traditional oriental medicine, Yin-Chen-Hao decoction is used for the remedy of liver diseases such as hepatitis, fatty liver, hepatocirrhosis and jaundice. However, despite extensive pharmacological study, the molecular mechanism of the anti-inflammatory effect of Yin-Chen-Hao decoction is poorly understood. In this study, we have investigated the pharmacological action on the mechanism of concanavalin A-induced T cell-dependent hepatitis in mice. Concanavalin A administration resulted in a severe liver injury. This was shown through increased levels of serum transaminase and lactic dehydrogenase, and increased liver DNA fragmentation and caspase-3 activity. Pretreatment with the aqueous extract from Yin-Chen-Hao decoction dose-dependently inhibited the elevation in transaminase and lactic dehydrogenase activity, and reduced liver DNA fragmentation and caspase-3 levels. There was an improvement in histological changes including inflammatory infiltration, hepatocyte necrosis and degeneration, and Kupffer cell hyperplasia. In addition, Yin-Chen-Hao decoction significantly inhibited tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production in-vitro and in-vivo. Moreover, the activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappaB), which regulates TNF-alpha production, was blocked by Yin-Chen-Hao decoction in-vitro and in-vivo. In conclusion, Yin-Chen-Hao decoction was capable of regulating T-cell-mediated liver injury in-vivo. This event may have depended on the decrease of TNF-alpha production through the inhibition of NF-kappaB activation.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the characteristics of serous retinal detachment on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography in preeclampsia.
Methods: In this retrospective case-series study, clinical characteristics of retinal damage were evaluated using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) imaging.
Results: Thirty affected eyes from 16 pregnant women with preeclampsia were included. The features of serous retinal detachment, observed using SD-OCT, consisted of lesions located in the macular or peripapillary region; the presence of intraretinal or subretinal fluid (intraretinal fluid, IRF; subretinal fluid, SRF); ellipsoid zone integrity (normal/abnormal); intraretinal hyper-reflective dots; and Elschnig spots (retinal pigment epithelium lesions). Of the 30 affected eyes, 25 (83.33%) had lesions located in the macular region, 19 (63.33%) outside the macula (in the peripapillary region), and 14 (46.67%) in both. SD-OCT showed IRF in 2 eyes (6.67%), SRF in 30 eyes (100.00%), and both in 2 eyes (6.67%). The ellipsoid zone was disrupted in 20 eyes (66.67%), intraretinal hyper-reflective dots were observed in 4 eyes (13.33%), and Elschnig spots were observed in 20 eyes (66.67%).
Conclusion: Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography is a non-invasive, reliable imaging tool for the assessment of retinal pathologies in preeclampsia.

Abstract This article examines the reasons behind the limited impact of China's mental health law reform in 2013 on reducing the use of restrictive measures in mental health services, focusing on the analysis of case law from Chinese courts. The analysis of collected rulings from the official database indicates that Chinese courts have adopted a lenient approach in scrutinizing the application of restrictive measures. Furthermore, the interpretation and application of the provisions related to restrictive measures in the law have led to service providers being held liable in numerous cases for not implementing such measures. Based on these findings, the article offers policy recommendations.

Abstract Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is the most widely prevalent herpes virus worldwide, and the herpetic encephalitis and genital herpes caused by HSV infection have caused serious harm to human health all over the world. Although many anti-HSV drugs such as nucleoside analogues have been ap-proved for clinical use during the past few decades, important issues, such as drug resistance, toxicity, and high cost of drugs, remain unresolved. Recently, the studies on the anti-HSV activities of marine natural products, such as marine polysaccharides, marine peptides and microbial secondary metabolites are attracting more and more attention all over the world. This review discusses the recent progress in research on the anti-HSV activities of these natural compounds obtained from marine organisms, relating to their structural features and the structure-activity relationships. In addition, the recent findings on the different anti-HSV mechanisms and molecular targets of marine compounds and their potential for therapeutic application will also be summarized in detail.

Abstract Objective: To study the correlation between risk factors, degree of vascular restenosis, and inflammatory factors after interventional treatment for stroke.
Methods: The clinical data of 96 stroke patients who received interventional therapy in our hospital from April 2020 to June 2021 were selected for retrospective study, and the postoperative follow-up was 1 year. Univariate and multivariate regression were used to analyze identified factors associated with interventional stroke efficacy. At the same time, the value of inflammatory factor levels in predicting vascular restenosis after interventional stroke was analyzed.
Results: According to our findings, several risk factors, including body mass index ≥ 25.51 kg/m2, smoking, drinking, hypertension, and diabetes, were identified as contributors to poor postoperative efficacy following stroke intervention (P<0.05). Furthermore, a notable association was observed between the severity of vascular stenosis (P<0.001) and the levels of interleukin 6, interleukin 2, TNF-α, and C-reactive protein. The combined assessment of these serum inflammatory factors exhibited excellent predictive capability for postoperative vascular restenosis and stenosis severity, yielding a sensitivity of 84.30%, a specificity of 81.20%, and an area under the curve of 0.882.
Conclusions: Obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension, and diabetes have been found to be associated with suboptimal outcomes following interventional treatment for stroke. The assessment of preoperative levels of inflammatory factors holds promise in predicting the likelihood of postoperative restenosis to a certain degree.

Abstract Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common metabolic diseases with complications including diabetic cardiomyopathy and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Recently, a growing body of research has revealed that the complex interplay between epigenetic changes and the environmental factors may significantly contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular complications secondary to diabetes. Methylation modifications, including DNA methylation and histone methylation among others, are important in developing diabetic cardiomyopathy. Here we summarized the literatures of studies focusing on the role of DNA methylation, and histone modifications in microvascular complications of diabetes and discussed the mechanism underlying these disorders, to provide the guidance for future research toward an integrated pathophysiology and novel therapeutic strategies to treat or prevent this frequent pathological condition.
