    Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are two global epidemics that share several metabolic defects, such as insulin resistance, impaired glucose metabolism, and mitochondrial defects. Importantly, strong evidence demonstrates that T2D significantly increases the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, particularly AD. Here, we provide an overview of the metabolic defects that characterize and link both pathologies putting the focus on mitochondria. The biomarker potential of mitochondrial components and the therapeutic potential of some drugs that target and modulate mitochondria are also briefly discussed.

    Abstract A despeito das duras críticas sofridas por Paulo Freire nos últimos anos, orquestradas pelo (des)governo vigente no Brasil, indubitável é o fato de que suas obras foram e são estudadas até os dias atuais, contribuindo significativamente para a formação de educadores e educadoras nacionais e internacionais. Incontestáveis também são os contributos subtraídos por intermédio das leituras dos escritos deste mundialmente reconhecido pernambucano e que em 2021 completaria 100 anos, se vivo fosse. Partindo dessas premissas, o presente artigo tem como objetivo primaz evidenciar as contribuições do legado de Paulo Freire para a formação de educadores e educadoras, a partir das obras Pedagogia da Autonomia e Pedagogia do Oprimido, podendo, assim, reverberar no processo de construção da emancipação humana. Para tanto, o estudo dispôs-se a realizar uma análise teórico-bibliográfica dos referidos livros, subsidiada pelas contribuições de Freire (2010), Marini (2018), Pavan (2011) dentre outros autores, referentes à temática da formação docente e à obra freiriana. Infere-se com essa investigação que a perspectiva freiriana traz, em seu bojo, significativas contribuições para os diferentes sujeitos educacionais, a partir do momento em que estes tomam consciência de seus papéis na transformação de uma sociedade de classes antagônicas, fundada na exploração do homem pelo homem.

    Abstract A região da Luz, centro de São Paulo, constitui caso significativo de disputa pela produção do espaço: renovações urbanas e parcerias público-privada (Estado, agentes construtores e financeiros). O preço da construção (valorização e capitalização) estrutura a urbanização e se realiza como um conjunto de pressuposições que pretendem identificar a região da Luz a outras mais valorizadas da cidade. O produto imobiliário decorrente é aquele que responde a uma determinada “vocação”. Movimento da natureza da renda cuja capitalização se manifesta como aumento do preço, deslocando-se da valorização decorrente da exploração imediata da força de trabalho. Resulta uma marcha que estende relações de produção de condomínios fechados para a cidade, conflitos do privado ao público. Uma “condominialização”, que tende à generalização da propriedade privada e da renda. Uma luta de classes socioespacial.

    Abstract Resumo Objetivo: descrever a ocorrência da hepatite B entre gestantes, a realização de imunoprofilaxia e a transmissão vertical e perinatal nas crianças expostas ao vírus na rede de Atenção Primária à Saúde do estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Métodos: estudo transversal sobre registros de pré-natal de gestantes atendidas de janeiro a junho de 2012 e coorte dos recém-nascidos; foram descritas as frequências dos resultados e calculada a estimativa da ocorrência da hepatite B. Resultados: foram incluídas 6.233 gestantes, das quais 53,1% com 20 a 29 anos de idade, 58,7% com 8 a 11 anos de estudo, 53,3% brancas e 73,9% com companheiro; a ocorrência de hepatite B foi de 0,13% (IC95%: 0,04 a 0,21%); das oito crianças de mães com hepatite B crônica, seis tiveram esquema vacinal completo e não houve transmissão vertical ou perinatal. Conclusão: observou-se baixa ocorrência de hepatite B em gestantes e ausência de transmissão vertical ou perinatal.

    Abstract Alzheimer's disease is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder and affects the lives not only of those who are diagnosed but also of their caregivers. Despite the enormous social, economic and political burden, AD remains a disease without an effective treatment and with several failed attempts to modify the disease course. The fact that AD clinical diagnosis is most often performed at a stage at which the underlying pathological events are in an advanced and conceivably irremediable state strongly hampers treatment attempts. This raises the awareness of the need to identify and characterize the early brain changes in AD, in order to identify possible novel therapeutic targets to circumvent AD's cascade of events. One of the most auspicious targets is mitochondria, powerful organelles found in nearly all cells of the body. A vast body of literature has shown that mitochondria from AD patients and model organisms of the disease differ from their non-AD counterparts. In view of this evidence, preserving and/or restoring mitochondria's health and function can represent the primary means to achieve advances to tackle AD. In this review, we will briefly assess and summarize the previous and latest evidence of mitochondria dysfunction in AD. A particular focus will be given to the recent updates and advances in the strategy options aimed to target faulty mitochondria in AD.

    Abstract O presente trabalho é um estudo sobre a visita às feiras livres de Londres, Inglaterra - RU, considerando a realidade atual deste tipo de comércio que possui mais de mil anos de existência nesta cidade. Foi feito levantamento bibliográfico e o relato da parte prática da pesquisa foi baseado na captação de dados durante a visita a 20 feiras livres no período de março/2015 a julho/2016, das quais três farmers markets foram escolhidas para este estudo, pois são feiras que vendem produtos diretamente do produtor para o consumidor final. O material coletado foi documentado através de fotos, tabelas/quadros e anotações. Toda esta pesquisa permitiu comparar as feiras livres nas áreas urbanas de Londres com as feiras livres realizadas em São Paulo.

    Abstract Introduction: Brazil nuts (BNs) result from sustainable extraction and are widely exploited in the Amazon region. Due to the production characteristics in the forest and the nutritional characteristics of these nuts, the occurrence of fungal contamination and the presence of aflatoxins are extensively discussed in the literature as a great aspect of interest and concern. This study aims to evaluate the microbial profile through DNA sequencing and amplification of 16S and ITS genes for bacterial and fungal analysis, respectively, and the presence of mycotoxins using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FD) from different fractions of the nuts processed.
    Methods: The BN samples, harvest A (HA) and harvest B (HB), from two different harvests were collected in an extractive cooperative in the Amazon region for microbiological analysis (from DNA extraction and amplification of 16S genes, bacteria analysis, and ITS for fungi) and mycotoxins (aflatoxins AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2) using HPLC-FD/KobraCell
