Abstract In space-division-multiplexed transmission systems, it is essential to realize fan-in/fan-out devices that connect the cores between multicore fibers and single-mode fibers. In this Letter, we propose a metasurface-based fan-in/fan-out device with nonuniform phase plates for heterogeneous 19-core fibers across the full C band. Our results show that an average insertion loss of 0.85 dB and a maximum crosstalk of -25.5 dB can be achieved at 1550 nm. Across the C band, the insertion loss and crosstalk are better than 2.78 dB and -19.96 dB, respectively. The proposed concept can flexibly handle various fiber configurations without additional complexity.

Abstract Contra-rotating fans (CRFs) have garnered significant attention due to their higher power-to-weight ratio compared to traditional fans; however, limited focus has been given to the localization and development of local aerodynamic losses. Furthermore, there is a need for further research on the impact of load distribution along the radius on local entropy production. Therefore, this study aims to investigate a contra-rotating fan as the research subject. An optimal design for load distribution along the radius is achieved by constructing a surrogate model in combination with a genetic algorithm. The effectiveness of this design has been verified through experimentation using a specific test device. In this study, a local entropy production rate (EPR) model adapted to the shear stress transport-detached eddy simulation (SST-DES) technique is constructed to evaluate the loss distribution of the contra-rotating fan. This paper primarily focuses on comparing and analyzing the blade profile and overall performance of the CRFs before and after optimization. The EPR contribution of each interval along the radius is compared to the corresponding blade channel to identify the approximate range of high-EPR regions. Furthermore, an investigation is conducted to examine the distribution of EPR along the streamwise direction in these high-EPR regions. After that, by comparing the development of the flow structure near a stall before and after optimization, combined with the analysis of the EPR contours, the EPR mechanism of this CRF is revealed.

Abstract We present a rapid and precise method to design the multiple step-index bridge fiber for ultra-low insertion loss few-mode multi-core fiber Fan-in/Fan-out device. The genetic algorithm is applied to optimize the structural parameters to support multi-mode operation. Based on the proposed intelligent iteration platform, core-based multiplex/demultiplex optimization can be achieved with less than 1.0 dB insertion loss for the first 6 LP modes in space division multiplexing system consisting of few-mode multi-core fibers. Besides, we have successfully drew the designed bridge fiber and fabricated the corresponding Fan-in/Fan-out device. When connecting it with the single-core 6-mode fiber and 7-core 6-mode fiber, the average insertion losses of mode LP01, LP11a, LP11b, LP21a, LP21b, and LP02 are 0.88 dB, 1.11 dB, 1.07 dB, 1.42 dB, 1.33 dB, and 1.04 dB, respectively.

Abstract An innovative aerial manipulator with ducted fans is proposed to achieve side-on aerial manipulation tasks in a confined environment, such as canopy sampling in dense forests. The dynamic model of the novel design is studied, and on this basis a composite controller is proposed to address the challenges of arm extension and physical interaction during the manipulation process. An adaptive controller is proposed for the aerial platform to achieve good stability and tracking performance under the manipulator motion, and an impedance controller is designed for the manipulator to ensure compliance and stability during physical contact. The experimental tests validate the effectiveness of the proposed prototype structure and controller design.

Abstract Image interpolation is a critical step in panoramic image unwrapping studies. Information calculated in the Cartesian coordinates, although broadly applied, applies to operation between rectangles that will destroy the compressed depth information. The polar coordinates, in contrast, can store depth information by handing between rectangle and circle to obtain more true images. A fan-ring interpolation based on the polar coordinates is proposed for unwrapping panoramic images in this study through replanning the pixel search path in the panorama, and is then supported by redefining third-order interpolation. We validate our method on synthetic and practical images. Compared with competitor models, the unwrapping image obtained from the fan-ring interpolation can provide better quality in subjective and objective evaluation with guaranteed accuracy.

Abstract A pilot project for groundwater recharge from rivers is currently being carried out in North China Plain. To investigate the influence of river recharge on groundwater hydrochemical characteristics, dynamic monitoring and analysis of groundwater samples were conducted at a typical recharge site in the Hutuo River alluvial-pluvial fan in the North China Plain from 2019 to 2021. Hydrochemical, isotopic, and multivariate statistical analyses were used to systematically reveal the spatiotemporal variation of groundwater chemistry and its driving factors during groundwater recharge process. The results showed that the groundwater hydrochemical types and characteristics in different recharge areas and recharge periods exhibited obvious spatiotemporal differences. The groundwater type varied from HCO

Abstract The single-cell screening has attracted great attentions in advanced biomedicine and tissue biology, especially for the early disease diagnosis and treatment monitoring. In this work, by using a specific-designed fiber probe with a flat facet, we propose an "optical fan" strategy to screen K562 cells at the single-cell level from a populations of RBCs. After the 980-nm laser beam injected into the fiber probe, the RBCs were blown away but holding target K562 cells in place. Further, multiple leukemic cells can be screened from hundreds of red blood cells, providing an efficient approach for the cell screening. The experimental results were interpreted by the numerical simulation, and the stiffness of optical fan was also discussed.

Abstract To avoid coating and filling into the fiber holes, facilitate the phase-matching and eliminate cross-sensitivity problems, we propose a surface plasmon resonance sensor based on a fan-shaped microstructured optical fiber (MOF) for the simultaneous sensing of temperature and refractive index (RI). The fan-shaped structure is fabricated by polishing two sides of MOF with an angle of 120°. One side is coated with the gold film and polydimethylsiloxane layer for temperature sensing, and the other side is only coated with the gold film for RI sensing. The two sensing sides can support resonance peaks with two polarized directions at the angle of 120°, which are independent without cross-sensitivity. By monitoring the shifts of the two polarized peaks, our numerical results show that the temperature sensitivity is 2.932 nm/°C in the range of 30 °C to 40 °C, and RI sensitivity is 4235 nm/RIU in the range of 1.38 to 1.39, respectively.

Abstract Quantification of the loss generation of ducted contra-rotating fan (CRF) blades is difficult to achieve, since there are no guide vanes between rotors. A blade design program was established to investigate the relationship between radial velocity distribution and incurred loss. Numerical and experimental techniques were used to confirm the optimal configuration's overall performance. The relationship between loss and velocity distribution under the impact of spanwise load distribution was confirmed by the entropy contour from various perspectives. The appropriate radial velocity distribution can improve the operating efficiency of a CRF by reducing the entropy around the annulus under design and near-stall conditions. This regularity could provide some strategies in the design of contra-rotating blades.
