Abstract Generational labels (e.g., Millennials and Baby Boomers) are widely used in daily life to represent the unique characteristics of groups of people. However, the existence of generational differences remains contentious. In their focal paper, Costanza et al. (2023) critically reviewed the literature on generational differences and proposed two future research directions: the social constructionist and lifespan development perspectives. In this commentary, we aimed to extend the proposed directions for future research on generational differences by integrating the two perspectives into one theoretical framework. Future research should investigate how proximal social relationships (e.g., intergenerational relations) and distal social norms (e.g., age norms) change over historical time and whether these historical changes shape individuals' development and aging. The theoretical framework that integrates the two proposed research directions may stimulate research on generational differences to progress beyond the concept of generations.

Abstract We show that an axionlike field coupled to a new confining gauge group can generate the primordial density perturbation in the postinflation Universe. The axion decay constant and strong coupling scale are uniquely determined by observations of the density perturbation, which further suggest a temporal deconfinement of the gauge group after inflation. The resulting temperature-dependent axion potential, together with its periodic nature, gives rise to the red-tilted density perturbation, with a positive local-type non-Gaussianity of order unity.

Abstract Individual development and aging are shaped by historical changes in sociocultural contexts. Studies indicate that later-born cohorts experience improvements in well-being in the young-old. However, whether this historical trend holds in the old-old remains unknown. Using longitudinal data of Japanese older adults, we examined birth cohort differences in trajectories of well-being as measured by life satisfaction. Data were derived from a nationally representative study conducted from 1987 to 2012. We compared earlier- and later-born cohorts over 10 years in two age groups: the young-old (

Abstract Objectives: To identify the predictive factors for the development of febrile neutropenia (FN) in the course of chemotherapy for patients with germ cell tumors.
Methods: From January 2005 to December 2018, 80 patients were treated with induction chemotherapy for advanced germ cell tumors at Kanagawa Cancer Center Hospital, Japan. Of these, we retrospectively analyzed 267 cycles of chemotherapy. The incidence of FN was used as the objective variable. As predictive factors, we analyzed age, international germ cell consensus classification (IGCCC), laboratory data at the start of chemotherapy in each cycle, length of the largest metastatic lesion, number of cycles, and prophylactic use of granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF).
Results: We finally analyzed 267 cycles in 78 patients. The median age was 36 years (15-64). There was a total of 267 cycles. FN occurred in 40 cycles (15%) in 31 patients (40%). The first cycle was accompanied by a significantly higher FN than the subsequent cycles (p < 0.001). The univariate analysis identified age ≧36 years (p = 0.001), creatinine clearance (CCr) <70 (p < 0.001), serum albumin <3.3 (p = 0.002), maximum tumor diameter ≧60 mm (p = 0.036), and first cycle as significant risk factors. The multivariate analysis identified age, CCr, and first cycle as independent predictive factors of FN development.
Conclusion: We identified older age, renal dysfunction, and first cycle of chemotherapy as predictive factors for FN. No statistically significant difference was shown in the usage of prophylactic G-CSF. Special attention should be given to FN in patients with high-risk factors.
