    Abstract In this work, Fabrication, and characterization of Cu-doped ZnO thin films deposited on porous silicon (PSi) substrates have been reported using electrochemical deposition (ECD) technique. The influence of Cu-doping concentrations on morphology, structure, and electrical characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were presented. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) has been used to characterize the lattice constants, average size, in-plane (along a-axis) and out of plane (along c-axis) strains for the Cu-ZnO crystals. The effects of Cu-doping concentration on crystal parameters were also investigated from the XRD analysis. The samples were used for UV-sensing applications. In addition, Cu-doped ZnO and pure ZnO metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector, with Cu as electrode contacts were successfully produced for ultraviolet (UV) detection. The I-V (current-voltage) characteristics were used to study the sensing enhancement. Finally, the UV photodetector based on Cu-doped ZnO films was successfully fabricated and shows a five times enhancement in the sensitivity to UV light compared to that of pure ZnO photodetector.

    Abstract Background and objective: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is still considered to be an uncontrolled endemic disease that spreads in many countries. The current study aimed to determine intra-species relationships of L. major using ITS2 sequencing.
    Methods: The study was conducted from the beginning of March to the end of November 2022. All medical information regarding CL was collected from patients of Thi-Qar province who attended the Dermatology Department of Al-Hussein Teaching Hospital in Nasiriyah city. Seventy-three samples were selected for the molecular identification after confirming microscopy with Giemsa stain. In this study, the primers were designed using NCBI GenBank sequence database and Primer 3 plus primer design online software.
    Results: The results recorded 21 (28.77%) positive samples of L. major using the internal transcribed spacer 2 region (ITS2) in ribosomal RNA gene. The local L. major IQN.1-IQN.10 were submitted to NCBI GenBank database with accession numbers OM069357.1-OM069366.1, respectively. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that local isolates of L. major showed a close relationship with NCBI-BLAST L. major Iran isolate (KU680848.1).
    Conclusion: ITS2-PCR is suitable for identifying Leishmania spp. and determining genetic diversity. A phylogenetic data analysis may provide an idea on the genetic homogeneity of local isolates and knowing the genetic origin of the dermal lesion. However, the local isolates showed genetic proximity to the KU680848.1 isolate. This signifies the possibility of infection prevalence from Iranian areas. In general, genetic variation of L. major isolates may give several clinical manifestations of the cutaneous lesion. Therefore, determination of the heterogeneity is important for detecting the infection origin, epidemiology, therapy, and control strategies.

    Abstract Background: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) disproportionately impacts black and multiracial infants. While there have been strides made to address this health disparity, strategies to increase awareness and knowledge of cCMV have not been investigated in a Somali community.
    Methods: Two survey study strategies (in-person and online), consisting of a pre-survey test, educational intervention, and a post-survey, were designed to gauge knowledge and perceptions about cCMV among Somali women aged 18 to 40 years old.
    Results: 96 respondents partook in the online module, and 15 in the in-person event. On recruitment, < 45% of women were aware of cCMV. Following the pre-intervention survey, educational modules were conducted, and the survey repeated. For statistical comparisons, a point was assigned for each correct survey query, and the mean of correct responses tabulated for pre- and post-surveys.     Conclusion: Both interventions were successful in enhancing knowledge about cCMV in this population, although there was no evidence either intervention was substantially better than the other. Educational efforts will be critical in enhancing the trust required to facilitate diagnostic evaluation and treatment of newborns identified with cCMV in this high-risk population.

    Abstract Vast amount of research has been recently conducted to discover drugs for efficacious treatment of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The ambiguity about using Chloroquine/ Hydroxychloroquine to treat this illness was a springboard towards new methods for improving the adequacy of these drugs. The effective treatment of COVID-19 using Zinc complexes as add-on to Chloroquine/ Hydroxychloroquine has received major attention in this context. The current studies have shed a light on molecular docking and molecular dynamics methodologies as powerful techniques in establishing therapeutic strategies to combat COVID-19 pandemic. We are proposing some zinc compounds coordination to Chloroquine/ Hydroxychloroquine in order to enhance their activity. The molecular docking calculations showed that Zn(QC)Cl2(H2O) has the least binding energy -7.70 Kcal /mol then Zn(HQC)Cl2(H2O) -7.54 Kcal /mol. The recorded hydrogen bonds were recognized in the strongest range of H Bond category distances. Identification of binding site interactions revealed that the interaction of Zn(QC)Cl2(H2O)with the protease of COVID-19 results in three hydrogen bonds, while Zn(HQC)Cl2(H2O) exhibited a strong binding to the main protease receptor by forming eight hydrogen bonds. The dynamic behavior of the proposed complexes was revealed by molecular dynamics simulations. The outcomes obtained from Molecular dynamics calculations approved the stability of Mpro-Zn(CQ/HCQ)Cl2H2O systems. These findings recommend Zn (CQ) Cl2H2O and Zn (HCQ) Cl2H2O as potential inhibitors for COVID-19 Mpro.

    Abstract Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) remains the number one birth defect worldwide. Pulse oximetry screening (POS) is a widely used CHD screening modality effective in detecting critical lesions. This study is aimed at assessing the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of POS in a cohort of term well-babies admitted to a regular nursery in a tertiary care center.
    Methods: We reviewed the charts of term babies admitted to our regular nursery over a period of one year. The results of POS and the findings of echocardiography were collected. Similarly, we explored the records of our fetal echocardiography program to identify the fetuses screened for CHD during the same period.
    Results: 900 term babies were born and admitted to newborn nursery at our center, and 69 fetuses were evaluated by our fetal cardiology team during the study period. None of our term babies had a positive POS at birth or 24 hours of age. However, 56 babies had a cardiac echo before hospital discharge due to suspicious findings on physical examination or a family history of CHD. A simple noncritical CHD was noted in 10 of them. Additionally, 53 babies underwent echocardiography within the first five years of life; a simple CHD was noted in 6 of them. In parallel, 21 of our fetuses were found to have CHD: 16 simple CHD and 5 critical CHD (CCHD).
    Conclusion: Despite its cost-effectiveness and efficacy in screening for CCHD, POS is suboptimal for detecting simple CHD. In the absence of a proper prenatal screening and fetal echocardiography program, POS remains a cost-effective modality for detecting CCHD.
