    Abstract Background: The clinical practicum is the practical course that causes the most anxiety in nursing undergraduates. Although high-fidelity simulation education has been demonstrated to boost nursing students' self-efficacy and decrease anxiety in patient care, it is also associated with excessive psychological stress. Assessment-simulation-animation-based (ASA-based) education has been developed to solve the drawbacks of simulation-based education while preserving positive learning outcomes.
    Objectives: To compare the effects of ASA-based education and traditional education in reducing anxiety and improving self-efficacy of junior nursing students in their maternity clinical practicum.
    Design: This study used a two-group pre-post quasi-experimental design. The comparison group was studied first followed by the experimental group.
    Settings: Department of Nursing and affiliated medical center at a medical university in southern Taiwan.
    Participants: We enrolled 114 junior nursing students from two different class years.
    Methods: A convenience sample of junior nursing students was used in this study, with 55 in the experimental group and 59 in the comparison group. The intervention included online ASA-based education videos with pamphlets and was conducted three days a week for five weeks encompassing the maternity nursing clinical practicum. We developed and applied the Clinical Situation Anxiety Scale (CS-AS) and Clinical Situation Self-Efficacy Scale (CS-SES) before and after the intervention. Qualitative feedback was assessed after the intervention. Data were collected from both the comparison and experimental groups during the fall and spring terms of both the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years.
    Results: Compared with the comparison group, the total CS-AS and CS-SES scores significantly improved from before to after the intervention in the experimental group. The students responded to the intervention by demonstrating clinical consistency, knowing what to do and how to do it and more confidently practicing health education.
    Conclusion: Our results suggest that ASA-based education with videos and pamphlets contributed to reducing anxiety and increasing self-efficacy in nursing students during their maternity clinical practicum.

    Abstract Background: Mycosis fungoides is the most common primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, whereas generalized erythroderma is rare. In this report, we describe a case of mycosis fungoides with generalized erythroderma using complete clinical data and [18F]fluoroDglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) images.
    Case summary: Systemic skin redness with desquamation for three years confirmed mycosis fungoides within one month. The patient underwent left axillary lymphadenectomy biopsy; pathological biopsy suggested abnormal T-cell lesions consistent with mycosis fungoides involving lymph nodes. The patient received methotrexate, 5 mg twice weekly, as part of their chemotherapy regimen. Patients January half after discharge, no obvious cause of high fever, left axillary lymph nodes with red heat pain, and rupture entered our hospital for treatment.
    Conclusion: The 18F-FDG PET/CT is essential for early diagnosis and timely treatment.

    Abstract Vascular calcification (VC) has emerged as a key predictor of cardiovascular events in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In recent years, an expanding body of research has put forth the concept of accelerated vascular aging among CKD patients, highlighting the significance of vascular cells senescence in the process of VC. Within the milieu of uremia, senescent vascular endothelial cells (VECs) release extracellular microvesicles (MV) that promote vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) senescence, thereby triggering the subsequent osteogenic phenotypic switch and ultimately contributing to the VC process. In addition, senescent vascular progenitor or stem cells with diminished ability to differentiate into VECs and VSMCS, compromise the repair of vascular integrity, on the other hand, release a cascade of molecules associated with senescence, collectively known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), perpetuating the senescence phenomenon. Furthermore, SASP triggers the recruitment of monocytes and macrophages, as well as adjacent VECs and VSMCs into a pro-adhesive and pro-inflammatory senescent state. This pro-inflammatory microenvironment niche not only impacts the functionality of immune cells but also influences the differentiation of myeloid immune cells, thereby amplifying the reduced ability to effectively clear senescent cells of senescent macrophages, promoted calcification of VSMCs. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the contribution of vascular cell senescence to the emergence and advancement of VC. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the involvement of cellular senescence within the vessel wall is pivotal, especially when it comes to its intersection with VC. This knowledge is essential for advancing groundbreaking anti-aging therapies, aiming to effectively mitigate cardiovascular diseases.

    Abstract The development of an innovative drug is complex and time-consuming, and the drug target identification is one of the critical steps in drug discovery process. Effective and accurate identification of drug targets can accelerate the drug development process. According to previous research, evolutionary and genetic information of genes has been found to facilitate the identification of approved drug targets. In addition, allosteric proteins have great potential as targets due to their structural diversity. However, this information that could facilitate target identification has not been collated in existing drug target databases. Here, we construct a comprehensive drug target database named Genetic and Evolutionary features of drug Targets database (GETdb, http://zhanglab.hzau.edu.cn/GETdb/page/index.jsp). This database not only integrates and standardizes data from dozens of commonly used drug and target databases, but also innovatively includes the genetic and evolutionary information of targets. Moreover, this database features an effective allosteric protein prediction model. GETdb contains approximately 4000 targets and over 29,000 drugs, and is a user-friendly database for searching, browsing and downloading data to facilitate the development of novel targets.

    Abstract Algal toxins are secondary metabolites produced by harmful algae; these metabolites are characterized with strong toxicity, diverse structure and bioaccumulation. Aquatic organisms that feed on harmful algae can accumulate algal toxins in their bodies, and the consumption of these organisms by humans can cause symptoms of paralysis, diarrhea, and even death. The onset of poisoning can occur within as little as 30 min; in many cases, no suitable antidote for algal toxins is available. Thus, algal toxins present significant threats to human health, the aquaculture industry, and aquatic ecosystems. Because the potential risks of algal toxins are a critical issue, these toxins have become a research hotspot. The water environment and various types of aquatic products should be monitored and analyzed to ensure their safety. However, because of possible matrix effects and the low content of algal toxins in actual samples, an efficient pretreatment method is necessary prior to instrumental analyses. Efficient sample pretreatment techniques can not only reduce or eliminate interferences from the sample matrix during analysis but also enrich the target analytes to meet the detection limit of the analytical instrument, thereby ensuring the sensitivity and accuracy of the detection method. In recent years, sample pretreatment techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), magnetic SPE (MSPE), dispersive SPE (DSPE), and pipette tip-based SPE (PT-SPE) have gained wide attention in the field of algal-toxin separation and analysis. The performance of these pretreatment techniques largely depends on the characteristics of the extraction materials. Given the diverse physicochemical properties of algal toxins, including their different molecular sizes, hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, and charges, the design and preparation of materials suitable for algal-toxin extraction is an essential undertaking. The optimal extraction material should be capable of reversible algal-toxin adsorption and preferably possess a porous structure with a large surface area to allow for high recovery rates and good interfacial contact with the toxins. Additionally, the extraction material should exhibit good chemical stability in the sample solution and elution solvent within the working pH range; otherwise, it may dissolve or lose its functional groups. Many research efforts have sought to develop novel adsorbent materials with these properties in the separation and analysis of algal toxins, focusing on carbon-based materials, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), and their functionalized counterparts. Carbon-based materials, MOFs, and COFs have advantages such as large surface areas and abundant adsorption sites. These extraction materials are widely used in the separation and analysis of target substances in complex environmental, biological, and food samples owing to their excellent performance and unique microstructure. They are also the main adsorbents used for the extraction of algal toxins. These extraction materials play an essential role in the extraction of algal toxins, but they also present a number of limitations: (1) Carbon-based materials, MOFs, and COFs have relatively poor selective-adsorption ability towards target substances; (2) Most MOFs are unstable in aqueous solutions and challenging to apply during extraction from water-based sample solutions; (3) COFs mainly consist of lightweight elements, rendering them difficult to completely separate from sample solutions using centrifugal force, which limits their application range; (4) Although MIPs have good selectivity, issues such as template-molecule loss, slow mass-transfer rates, and low adsorption capacity must be addressed. Therefore, the design and preparation of novel functionalized extraction materials specifically tailored for algal toxins and studies on new composite extraction materials are highly desirable. This article collects representative literature from domestic and international research on algal-toxin analysis over the past decade, summarizes the relevant findings, categorizes the applications of novel functional materials in algal-toxin-extraction processes, and provides an outlook on their future development prospects.

    Abstract Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the use of a concise fall risk stratification in assessing and predicting falls compared with the Morse Falls Scale among older adults with cataracts in day surgery settings.
    Methods: A historically controlled study conducted from July 2020 to June 2022 was used in a municipal ophthalmic hospital in China. The concise fall risk stratification which directly graded fall risk by multifactorial judgment was used during the intervention period, while the Morse Falls Scale which graded fall risk by scale scores was used during the control period. The fall risk levels, fall assessment time, fall rates, fall-related injuries, predictive validity, and patient satisfaction with day surgery care were extracted. Propensity score matching was performed to balance baselines.
    Results: After matching, 4132 patients were included in the final analysis. Compared with the control group, the intervention group had significantly higher assessment results for fall risk level, a significantly shorter (by 48.15%) fall assessment time, and higher patient satisfaction. There were no differences in fall rates and fall-related injuries. Compared with the Morse Falls Scale, the concise fall risk stratification had higher sensitivity and negative predictive validity, and lower specificity and positive predictive validity, while the area under curve did not differ significantly.
    Conclusion: The use of the concise fall risk stratification reduced fall assessment time, improved patient satisfaction, and is unlikely to impact falls with an overall predictive performance comparable to that of the Morse Falls Scale for older cataract adults in day surgery settings.
