Abstract: ... and the role of the complex topography in Taiwan during the Mei-yu season without the influence ...

Abstract In this study, idealized cloud-resolving simulations are performed for horizontally uniform and steady southwesterly flow at fixed direction–speed combinations to investigate rainfall characteristics and the role of the complex topography in Taiwan during the Mei-yu season without the influence of a front or other disturbances. Eight directions (180 to 285 ∘ , every 15 ∘ ) and eight speeds (5 to 22.5 m s −1 , every 2.5 m s −1 ) are considered, and near-surface relative humidity is also altered (from 55 %–100 %) in a subset of these tests to further examine the effects of moisture content, yielding a total 109 experiments each having a integration length of 50 h . Three rainfall regimes that correspond to different ranges of the wet Froude number ( Fr w ) are identified from the idealized simulations (with a grid size of 2 km ). The low- Fr w regime ( Fr w ≤ ∼ 0.3) is where the island circulation from thermodynamic effects is the main driver of rainfall in local afternoon. The lower the wind speed and Fr w are, the more widespread the rainfall is, as well as its amount. On the other hand, the high- Fr w regime ( Fr w ≥ ∼ 0.4) occurs when the flow of at least 12.5 m s −1 impinges on Taiwan terrain at a large angle (not parallel). This favors the flow-over scenario, and topographic rainfall production becomes dominant through mechanical uplift of unstable air. In this scenario, the faster and wetter the flow is, the heavier the rainfall on the windward slopes is, and maximum amounts typically occur at wind directions from 240–255 ∘ . Between the two regimes above, a third, mixed regime also exists. The idealized results are discussed for their applicability to the real atmosphere.

Abstract COVID-19 is a global pandemic infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The herbal formula, Ping An Fang Yu Yin (PAFYY), has been used to prevent respiratory viral infections for many years. This study aims to evaluate the effect of PAFYY on SARS-CoV-2 infection, oxidative stress, and inflammation via in vitro, investigate the chemical composition by full constituent quantitative analysis, and verify its anti-viral potential against SARS-CoV-2 using in silico. In this study, a total of eleven compounds, twenty amino acids, saccharide compositions, and trace elements were found and quantitatively determined by chromatographic techniques. PAFYY displayed free radical scavenging activity (DPPH, SC 50 : 1.24 ± 0.09 mg/mL), SOD activity (68.71 ± 1.28%), inhibition of lipoxygenase activity (75.96 ± 7.64 mg/mL) and interfered the interaction of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (48.04 ± 3.18%). Furthermore, in-silico analysis results supported that liquiritin, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, and luteolin-7- O -glucoside with the highest affinity between SARS-CoV-2 RBD and human angiotensin-converting enzyme II (hACE2) receptor. Our findings suggest that PAFYY has the potential for anti-SARS-CoV-2 infection, anti-oxidation stress, and anti-inflammation, and may be used as supplements for amelioration or prevention of COVID-19 symptoms, as well as the representative compounds can be used for quality control of PAFYY in the future.

Abstract Active and prompt scale-up screening tests are essential to efficiently control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. The goal of this work was to identify shortcomings in the conventional screening system (CSS) implemented in the beginning of the outbreak. To overcome these shortcomings, we then introduced a novel, independently developed system called the Yeungnam University type drive-through (YU-Thru), and distributed it nationwide in Korea. This system is similar to the drive-throughs utilized by fast food restaurants. YU-Thru system has shortened the time taken to test a single person to 2-4 minutes, by completely eliminating the time required to clean and ventilate the specimen collection room. This time requirement was a major drawback of the CSS. YU-Thru system also reduced the risk of subjects and medical staff infecting one another by using a separate and closed examination system. On average, 50 to 60 tests were conducted per day when using the CSS, while now up to 350 tests per day are conducted with the YU-Thru system. We believe that the YU-Thru system has made an important contribution to the rapid detection of COVID-19 in Daegu, South Korea. Here, we will describe the YU-Thru system in detail so that other countries experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks can take advantage of this system.

Abstract Qing-Yu-Mu (QYM) is an herbal formula used to prevent and treat liver disease in Taiwan. In this study, the hepatoprotective effects of QYM were evaluated in two experimental models. First, rats were fed a high-frying oil (FO) diet containing 1.25% QYM for 5 weeks to investigate effects of QYM on hepatic oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme activities. Then, protective effects of QYM on carbon tetrachloride (CCl

Abstract Il Chun Yu was the first Korean microbiologist and the Korean student who studied in Germany. He got the two doctor degree: one in Freiburg University of Germany in 1924, and the other Keio University of Japan in 1926. He became a professor of Kyungsung Medical Junior College in 1926, and as the first grade scholar in the Korean microbiology field. He issued many essays in several mass communication media to cultivate people and played an important role in the field of health hygiene by contributing to the improvement of health hygiene.

Abstract The goal of this research is to understand the effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) on the size, type of inflorescences and yield of ‘Yu Her Pau’ litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.). Additionally, we would like to determine if GA3 application could potentially replace manual inflorescence pruning. During the induction of inflorescence in the 2007–2008 and 2008–2009 study periods, 100mgL−1 GA3 was applied to the foliar part of the whole ‘Yu Her Pau’ litchi plant every two weeks, for a total of six treatment timings. This was done to compare the handling time with the blooming performance, as well as to compare the yields with the fruit quality of two control groups (one with no treatment and the other with only manual inflorescence pruning). The results indicated that the application of GA3 could increase the ratio of leafy inflorescence (leafy inflorescences/total number of inflorescences) from 10% to 55% (2007–2008) and from 16.67% to 87.5% (2008–2009). Additionally, the length of the inflorescences decreased from 34.78cm to 26.88cm (2007–2008), and from 32.13cm to 21.95cm. The average number of fruit set per branch was increased from 0.49 (2007–2008) and 0.5 (2008–2009) to 2.10 and 5.18, respectively. And increment did not affect the fruit quality. The fruit set that received the GA3 application was equal to (2007–2008) or better than (2008–2009) manual pruning. These results indicate that the GA3 treatment could effectively replace the manual inflorescence pruning in ‘Yu Her Pau’ litchi.
