Abstract Background: Shortawn foxtail (Alopecurus aequalis Sobol.) is a noxious weed in China. The resistance of A. aequalis developed rapidly due to the long-term application of acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Here, a suspected mesosulfuron-methyl-resistant A. aequalis population, Aa-R, was collected from a wheat field in China.
Results: A dose‒response test showed that the Aa-R population has evolved a high level of resistance to mesosulfuron-methyl, and its growth was suppressed by imazamox, pyroxsulam and bispyribac-sodium. ALS gene sequence analysis revealed that a known resistance-related mutation (Pro-197-Thr) was present in the Aa-R population. Moreover, ALS gene overexpression was detected in the Aa-R population. The mesosulfuron-methyl resistance could be reversed by cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (CYP450) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) inhibitors. In addition, enhanced metabolism of mesosulfuron-methyl was detected in the Aa-R population compared with the susceptible population. NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase and GST activities were strongly inducible in the Aa-R population. One CYP450 gene, CYP74A2, and one GST gene, GST4, were constitutively upregulated in the Aa-R population. Molecular docking results showed the binding affinity of CYP74A2 and GST4 for the tested ALS-inhibiting herbicides, respectively.
Conclusion: This study confirmed that target-site resistance and non-target-site resistance involving CYP450 and GST were the main mechanisms involved in resistance in the mesosulfuron-methyl-resistant A. aequalis population.

Abstract Crevice corrosion (CC) behavior of 201 stainless steel (SS) in 1 M NaCl + x M HCl/y M NaOH solutions with various pH was investigated using SECM and optical microscopic observations. Results show that the CC was initiated by the decrease in pH value within the crevice. The pH value near the crevice mouth falls rapidly to 1.38 in the first 2 h in the strongly acidic solution, while the pH value was observed to rise firstly and then decrease in the neutral and alkaline solutions. It indicates there is no incubation phase in the CC evolution of 201-SS in a pH = 2.00 solution, while an incubation phase was observed in pH = 7.00 and 11.00 solutions. Additionally, there appeared to be a radial pH variation within the gap over time. The pH value is the lowest at the gap mouth, which is in line with the in situ optical observation result that the severely corroded region is at the mouth of the gap. The decrease in pH value inside results in the negative shift of open circuit potential (OCP) and the initiation of CC of 201-SS. The increased anodic dissolution rate in the acidic solution accelerates the breakdown of passive film inside, reducing the initiation time and stimulating the spread of CC.

Abstract Background: Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Nees is a troublesome weed across China in rice fields, and a suspected L. chinensis resistant population (R) that has survived the recommended field dose of cyhalofop-butyl was collected in a rice field of Hunan Province, China. In this study, we aimed to determine the acetyl-CoA carboxylase-inhibiting herbicide resistance profile of this R population and to investigate its mechanisms of resistance to cyhalofop-butyl.
Results: Compared with the susceptible population (S), the R population was confirmed to be 18.9-, 3.2-, 4.1-, 3.6- and 5.8- fold resistant to the APP herbicides cyhalofop-butyl, haloxyfop-P-methyl, clodinafop-propargyl, metamifop and fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, respectively. ACCase gene sequencing analysis revealed no known resistance mutations for TSR in the R population. Pretreatment with the glutathione S-transferase (GST) inhibitor 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD-Cl) and cytochrome P450 (CYP450) inhibitor malathion reversed resistance to cyhalofop-butyl. The GST gene GSTU1 and CYP450 gene CYP707A5 were constitutively upregulated in the R population according to RNA-seq analysis and RT-qPCR verification. The molecular docking results indicated a good affinity of the active site for five APP herbicides with GSTU1 and CYP707A5.
Conclusion: This study shows that the GSTU1 and CYP707A5 genes expressed highly in the R population may be responsible for cyhalofop-butyl resistance in L. chinensis.

Abstract Any equipment submerged in the ocean will have its surface attacked by fouling organisms, which can cause serious damage. Traditional antifouling coatings contain heavy metal ions, which also have a detrimental effect on the marine ecological environment and cannot fulfill the needs of practical applications. As the awareness of environmental protection is increasing, new environmentally friendly and broad-spectrum antifouling coatings have become the current research hotspot in the field of marine antifouling. This review briefly outlines the formation process of biofouling and the fouling mechanism. Then, it describes the research progress of new environmentally friendly antifouling coatings in recent years, including fouling release antifouling coatings, photocatalytic antifouling coatings and natural antifouling agents derived from biomimetic strategies, micro/nanostructured antifouling materials and hydrogel antifouling coatings. Highlights include the mechanism of action of antimicrobial peptides and the means of preparation of modified surfaces. This category of antifouling materials has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and environmental friendliness and is expected to be a new type of marine antifouling coating with desirable antifouling functions. Finally, the future research directions of antifouling coatings are prospected, which are intended to provide a reference for the development of efficient, broad-spectrum and green marine antifouling coatings.

Abstract Background: Since the inception of the term "Biomimetics" in 1991, the concept of utilizing natural solutions or deriving inspiration from nature to address contemporary engineering challenges has gained significant attention within the scientific community. Organisms, in order to thrive in harsh environments, have evolved a wide range of micro/nanostructured surfaces, which serve as a rich source of inspiration for the development of artificial micro/nano-structured surfaces. These natural adaptations provide valuable insights and novel pathways for fabricating such surfaces.
Aim: To conclude recent advances in micro/nano-structured surfaces from four aspects: biomimetic micro-structured surfaces of plants and animals, properties and applications of biomimetic surfaces, methods of preparations, and their limitation.
Key scientific concepts: Artificial micro/nano-structured surfaces inspired by animals and plants are classified and demonstrated according to their living environment. The performances, principles and preparation techniques of natural superhydrophobic surfaces, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS), anisotropic surfaces, etc. are described in detail. Moreover, the pros and cons of each preparation measures are compared and the challenges developing large-scale, cost-effective surface microstructure preparation processes are pointed out. In the end, the development trends of artificial micro/nano-structured surface are forecasted.

Abstract Remote sensing extraction of glacial lakes is an effective way of monitoring water body distribution and outburst events. At present, the lack of glacial lake datasets and the edge recognition problem of semantic segmentation networks lead to poor accuracy and inaccurate outlines of glacial lakes. Therefore, this study constructed a high-resolution dataset containing seven types of glacial lakes and proposed a refined glacial lake extraction method, which combines the LinkNet50 network for rough extraction and simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC) dense conditional random field (DenseCRF) for optimization. The results show that (1) with Google Earth images of 0.52 m resolution in the study area, the recall, precision, F1 score, and intersection over union (IoU) of glacial lake extraction based on the proposed method are 96.52 %, 92.49 %, 94.46 %, and 90.69 %, respectively, and (2) with the Google Earth images of 2.11 m resolution in the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve, 2300 glacial lakes with a total area of 65.17 km 2 were detected by the proposed method. The area of the minimum glacial lake that can be extracted is 160 m 2 (less than 6×6 pixels). This method has advantages in small glacial lake extraction and refined outline detection, which can be applied to extracting glacial lakes in the high-Asia region with high-resolution images.

Abstract During storage and processing, muscle proteins, e.g. myosin and myoglobin, will inevitably undergo degeneration, which is thus accompanied by quality deterioration of muscle foods. Some exogenous additives have been widely used to interact with muscle proteins to stabilize the quality of muscle foods. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) are regarded as promising tools for recognizing dynamic molecular information at atomic level. Molecular docking and MDS can explore chemical bonds, specific binding sites, spatial structure changes, and binding energy between additives and muscle proteins. Development and workflow of molecular docking and MDS are systematically summarized in this review. Roles of molecular simulations are, for the first time, comprehensively discussed in recognizing the interaction details between muscle proteins and exogenous additives aimed for stabilizing color, texture, flavor, and other properties of muscle foods. Finally, research directions of molecular docking and MDS for improving the qualities of muscle foods are discussed.
