  2. Book ; Online ; E-Book: Behavioural ecology of western Palearctic falcons

    Leonardi, Giovanni

    2020

Abstract: ... it is possible to provide a working framework for rarer, and especially threatened, falcon species. ...

    Author's details Giovanni Leonardi
Abstract This monograph is the result of eight years of bibliographical and field research concerning several behavioural ecology aspects of the Palaearctic falcons. For a while, this book grew along with “The Lanner falcon” published in 2015 and revised in 2017. In both books the main aim was to provide a clear overview of the biology and ecology of these species. In fact in the last 20 years, the number of publications on falcons has grown tremendously and, in parallel, also those belonging to the so-called "grey literature". The number of people involved is also increased by including both academics and nature lovers. Many previously published books emphasized identification, and offered little insights on the behavioural and ecological aspects of the species. Very often, the research on behavioural ecology remains closed within the confines of academic community. By contrast, a multitude of basic data is scattered in countless articles published in local magazines. Many falcon species are easy to observe and study (such as kestrels) but others are more rare and localized. In order to understand the survival strategies adopted by this group of avian predators, it is necessary not to lose sight of the overall picture. This book tries to explain the different survival strategies by examining, through a few essential chapters, some crucial aspects for all species. The first chapter provides information on the genus Falco, its genetics, evolution and morphological peculiarities. The other chapters deal with reproductive strategies, competition, exploitation of resources, dispersal patterns, communication and sociality. One of the main objectives of this book is to produce an accessible but scholarly curated source of reference. By understanding the most common species, it is possible to provide a working framework for rarer, and especially threatened, falcon species.

Abstract Contextual bandits can solve a huge range of real-world problems. However, current popular algorithms to solve them either rely on linear models or unreliable uncertainty estimation in non-linear models, which are required to deal with the exploration-exploitation trade-off. Inspired by theories of human cognition, we introduce novel techniques that use maximum entropy exploration, relying on neural networks to find optimal policies in settings with both continuous and discrete action spaces. We present two classes of models, one with neural networks as reward estimators, and the other with energy based models, which model the probability of obtaining an optimal reward given an action. We evaluate the performance of these models in static and dynamic contextual bandit simulation environments. We show that both techniques outperform standard baseline algorithms, such as NN HMC, NN Discrete, Upper Confidence Bound, and Thompson Sampling, where energy based models have the best overall performance. This provides practitioners with new techniques that perform well in static and dynamic settings, and are particularly well suited to non-linear scenarios with continuous action spaces.

Abstract In high-sensitive laser interferometers, such as the gravitational-wave detector KAGRA, ultra-high-quality mirrors are essential. In the case of KAGRA, where cavity mirrors are cooled down to 20 K, large-size Sapphire crystals are used as the substrate for the main mirrors to achieve both a good optical quality (i.e., low absorption and uniform refractive index) and optimized thermal behavior under cryogenic temperatures. To implement the very tight optical specifications required by this demanding application, it is mandatory to test the optical homogeneity of different substrates. In order to characterize refractive-index inhomogeneities of large-size uniaxial samples such as the KAGRA Sapphire test masses, we developed a dedicated setup, allowing to resolve birefringence changes with a sensitivity in the order of [Formula: see text] and a spatial resolution of [Formula: see text]. Moreover, the same setup allows us to simultaneously record residual absorption maps, thus allowing for a comparison between birefringence and absorption features. In this paper, we will present for the first time measurements on a KAGRA-sized Sapphire substrate which has been characterized in terms of absorption already in an earlier work. Both birefringence inhomogeneities and absorption distributions will be compared and correlations discussed.

Abstract The aesthetic quality of an image is defined as the measure or appreciation of the beauty of an image. Aesthetics is inherently a subjective property but there are certain factors that influence it such as, the semantic content of the image, the attributes describing the artistic aspect, the photographic setup used for the shot, etc. In this paper we propose a method for the automatic prediction of the aesthetics of an image that is based on the analysis of the semantic content, the artistic style and the composition of the image. The proposed network includes: a pre-trained network for semantic features extraction (the Backbone); a Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) network that relies on the Backbone features for the prediction of image attributes (the AttributeNet); a self-adaptive Hypernetwork that exploits the attributes prior encoded into the embedding generated by the AttributeNet to predict the parameters of the target network dedicated to aesthetic estimation (the AestheticNet). Given an image, the proposed multi-network is able to predict: style and composition attributes, and aesthetic score distribution. Results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, while the ablation study gives a better understanding of the proposed network.

Abstract There is growing interest in the adoption of Engineering with Nature or Nature Based Solutions for coastal protection including large mega-nourishment interventions. However, there are still many unknowns on the variables and design features influencing their functionalities. There are also challenges in the optimization of coastal modelling outputs or information usage in support of decision-making. In this study, more than five hundred numerical simulations with different sandengine designs and different locations along Morecambe Bay (UK) were conducted in Delft3D. Twelve Artificial Neural Networking ensemble models structures were trained on the simulated data to predict the influence of different sand engines on water depth, wave height and sediment transports with good performance. The ensemble models were then packed into a Sand Engine App developed in MATLAB and designed to calculate the impact of different sand engine features on the above variables based on users' inputs of sandengine designs.
