Abstract Exfoliated flakes of layered materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and graphite with a thickness of several tens of nanometers, are used to construct van der Waals heterostructures. A flake with a desirable thickness, size, and shape is often selected from many exfoliated flakes placed randomly on a substrate using an optical microscope. This study examined the visualization of thick hBN and graphite flakes on SiO

Abstract To evaluate the expiratory sounds produced during swallowing recorded simultaneously with videofluorographic examination of swallowing (VF) using fast Fourier transform (FFT), and to examine the relationship between dysphagia and its acoustic characteristics. A total of 348 samples of expiratory sounds were collected from 61 patients with dysphagia whose expiratory sounds were recorded during VF. The VF results were evaluated by one dentist and categorized into three groups: safe group (SG), penetration group (PG), and aspiration group (AG). The duration and maximum amplitude of expiratory sounds produced were measured as the domain characteristics on the time waveform of these sounds and compared among the groups. Time window-length appropriate for FFT and acoustic discriminate values (AD values) of SG, PG, and AG were also investigated. The groups were analyzed using analysis of variance and Scheffé's multiple comparison method. The maximum amplitude of SG was significantly smaller than those of PG and AG. The mean duration in SG (2.05 s) was significantly longer than those in PG (0.84 s) and AG (0.96 s). The AD value in SG was significantly lower than those in PG and AG. AD value detects penetration or aspiration, and can be useful in screening for dysphagia.

Abstract Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is an important insulating layered material for two-dimensional heterostructure devices. Among many applications, few-layer h-BN films have been employed as superior tunneling barrier films. However, it is difficult to construct a heterostructure with ultra-thin h-BN owing to the poor visibility of flakes on substrates, especially on a metallic surface substrate. Since reflectance from a metallic surface is generally high, a h-BN film on a metallic surface does not largely influence reflection spectra. In the present study, a thin Au layer with a thickness of ∼10 nm deposited on a Si substrate with a thermally grown SiO

Abstract RNase H acts as a key effector in gene knockdown by antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs). Although various chemical modifications have been developed to regulate RNase H-mediated cleavage, precise control is yet to be achieved. In this study, we tried to address the question of whether the interaction of phosphate groups or deoxyriboses is more important in the recognition of DNA/RNA duplex by RNase H. To answer this question, we investigated the effect of methylene group insertion at the 5'-upstream or 3'-downstream phosphorothioate groups on RNase H-mediated cleavage. By inserting a methylene group at the 5'-upside or 3'-downside, the distance between phosphates or deoxyriboses could be changed in a different pattern. Maximum suppression of the cleavage reaction was observed when a methylene group was inserted at the 5'-phosphate group of the nucleoside which is known to distinguish ribose and deoxyribose

Abstract It remains unclear which adjunctive drug for Parkinson's disease (PD) in combination with levodopa is more effective, tolerable, and safe. We aimed to compare the efficacy, tolerability, and safety among anti-PD drugs from several classes in patients with fluctuating PD who received levodopa through network meta-analysis (NMA). Twelve anti-PD drugs belonging to 4 different drug classes (dopamine agonists, monoamine oxidase type B inhibitors, catechol-O-methyl transferase inhibitors, and an adenosine A2A receptor antagonist) were selected. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing placebo with anti-PD drug or among anti-PD drugs in patients with PD who experienced motor fluctuations or wearing-off and received levodopa. We included 54 RCTs in the analysis. The NMA was performed under a frequentist framework using a random-effects model. The efficacy outcome was change in daily off-time, and the tolerability outcome was discontinuation due to all causes. Safety outcomes included discontinuation due to adverse events (AEs) and the incidence of AEs, dyskinesia, hallucination, and orthostatic hypotension. According to the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) in the NMA, ropinirole transdermal patch (SUCRA, 0.861) ranked the highest in efficacy, followed by pramipexole (0.762), ropinirole extended release (ER) (0.750), and safinamide (0.691). In terms of tolerability, ropinirole (0.954) ranked the highest, followed by pramipexole (0.857), safinamide (0.717), and ropinirole ER (0.708). Each anti-PD drug had different SUCRA ranking profiles for the safety outcomes. These findings suggest that ropinirole, pramipexole, and safinamide are well-balanced anti-PD drugs that satisfy both efficacy and tolerability outcomes.

Abstract The initial stage of organic semiconductor film formation greatly affects the properties of films, which are used in organic devices including thin-film transistors and light-emitting diodes. Organic monolayer islands that are formed on a suitable substrate can be observed with a conventional optical microscope. Furthermore, the use of a polarized microscope allows the determination of the refractive index and crystal orientation of islands. Here, we report organic monolayer islands of 2,9-diphenyl-dinaphtho[2,3-b:2′,3′-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DPh-DNTT) deposited on a Si substrate with thermally grown SiO₂ to investigate the crystal orientation of islands by polarized light microscopy. The observation of DPh-DNTT islands under polarized quasi-monochromatic light reveals that reflection intensity depends on both the crystal orientation and irradiation wavelength. A comparison between experimental and calculated reflection intensities provides an estimate of an anisotropic complex refractive index in the plane. The crossed-polarized microscopy image of a SiO₂/Si substrate with DPh-DNTT islands shows that the contrast between the islands and SiO₂ surface is sensitive to the angle between the polarizer and analyzer and depends on the direction of crystal orientation. The dependence of reflection contrast, which can be explained by the anisotropic extinction coefficient, is used to confirm crystal orientation.

Abstract In this work, a monolayer of n-alkanethiol formed on an approximately 8 nm thick Au film, deposited onto a Si substrate with a thermally grown SiO₂ layer, was characterized using reflected light microscope with a narrow band-pass filter. The semitransparent, thin Au film, which is electrically conductive, provides interference in the films, and the optical properties of the monolayer depend on the alkanethiol length. When the surface of a Au film is photographed with a digital camera attached to the microscope, the color changes slightly with formation of a monolayer. The difference depends on the wavelength of a light source. Observations with narrow band-pass filters of 490 and 520 nm were found to provide a large difference, which is useful to characterize a monolayer. The difference increases with the length of the alkyl chains in the monolayer. Thus, the presented approach enables the fact that the number of the alkyl-chain units is identified through observations at an appropriate wavelength. This simple technique, which uses a general commercial microscope, can thus be used to confirm the presence of a monolayer with a molecular-order thickness.
