Abstract Mucin-type O-glycans play key roles in many cellular processes, and they are often altered in human diseases. A major challenge in studying the role of O-glycans through functional O-glycomics is the absence of a complete repertoire of the glycans that comprise the human O-glycome. Here we describe a cellular O-glycome preparation strategy, Preparative Cellular O-Glycome Reporter/Amplification (pCORA), that introduces 4-N₃-Bn-GalNAc(Ac)₃ as a novel precursor in large-scale cell cultures to generate usable amounts of O-glycans as a potential O-glycome factory. Cultured human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) A549 cells take up the precursor, which is extended by cellular glycosyltransferases to produce 4-N₃-Bn-α-O-glycans that are secreted into the culture medium. The O-glycan derivatives can be clicked with a fluorescent bifunctional tag that allows multidimensional HPLC purification and production of a tagged glycan library, representing the O-glycome of the corresponding cells. We obtained ∼5% conversion of precursor to O-glycans and purified a tagged O-glycan library of over 100 O-glycan derivatives, many of which were present in >100 nmol amounts and were sequenced by sequential MS fragmentation (MSⁿ). These O-glycans were successfully printed onto epoxy glass slides as an O-glycome shotgun microarray. We used this novel array to explore binding activity of serum IgM in healthy persons and NSCLC patients at different cancer stages. This novel strategy provides access to complex O-glycans in significant quantities and may offer a new route to discovery of potential diagnostic disease biomarkers.

Abstract High-nickel layered oxides, such as NMC 811, are very attractive high energy density cathode materials. However, the high nickel content creates a number of challenges, including high surface reactivity and structural instability. Through a wet chemistry method, a Li–Nb–O coated and substituted NMC 811 was obtained in a single step treatment. This Li–Nb–O treatment not only supplied a protective surface coating but also optimized the electrochemical behavior by Nb⁵⁺ incorporation into the bulk structure. As a result, the 1st capacity loss was significantly reduced (13.7 vs 25.1 mA h/g), contributing at least a 5% increase to the energy density of the full cell. In addition, both the rate (158 vs 135 mA h/g at 2C) and capacity retention (89.6 vs 81.6% after 60 cycles) performance were enhanced.

Abstract A study of the correlations between the stoichiometry, secondary phases and transition metal ordering of LiNi(0.5)Mn(1.5)O(4) was undertaken by characterizing samples synthesized at different temperatures. Insight into the composition of the samples was obtained by electron microscopy, neutron diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In turn, analysis of cationic ordering was performed by combining neutron diffraction with Li MAS NMR spectroscopy. Under the conditions chosen for the synthesis, all samples systematically showed an excess of Mn, which was compensated by the formation of a secondary rock salt phase and not via the creation of oxygen vacancies. Local deviations from the ideal 3:1 Mn:Ni ordering were found, even for samples that show the superlattice ordering by diffraction, with different disordered schemes also being possible. The magnetic behavior of the samples was correlated with the deviations from this ideal ordering arrangement. The in-depth crystal-chemical knowledge generated was employed to evaluate the influence of these parameters on the electrochemical behavior of the materials.

Abstract Structure refinement of high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction data of the title compound gave the composition Li(1.865)CoP(2)O(7), which is also verified by the ICP measurement. Two Co sites exist in the structure: one is a CoO(5) square pyramid and the other is a CoO(6) octa-hedron. They share edges and are further inter-connected through P(2)O(7) groups, forming a three-dimensional framework, which exhibits different kinds of inter-secting tunnels containing Li cations and could be of great inter-est in Li ion battery chemistry. The structure also exhibits cation disorder with 13.5% Co residing at the lithium (Li1) site. Co seems to have an average oxidation state of 2.135, as obtained from the strutural stochiometry that closely supports the magnetic susceptibility findings.
