Abstract Human Coronaviruses (HCoVs) have long been known as respiratory viruses. However, there are reports of neurological findings in HCoV infections, particularly in patients infected with the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) amid Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Therefore, it is essential to interpret the interaction of HCoVs and the nervous system and apply this understanding to the COVID-19 pandemic. This review of the literature analyses how HCoVs, in general, and SARS-CoV-2, in particular, affect the nervous system, highlights the various underlying mechanisms, addresses the associated neurological and psychiatric manifestations, and identifies the neurological risk factors involved. This review of literature shows the magnitude of neurological conditions associated with HCoV infections, including SARS-CoV-2. This review emphasises, that, during HCoV outbreaks, such as COVID-19, a focus on early detection of neurotropism, alertness for the resulting neurological complications, and the recognition of neurological risk factors are crucial to reduce the workload on hospitals, particularly intensive-care units and neurological departments.

Abstract Background: Burns constitute a major global health challenge, causing not only physical trauma, but also significant psychosocial and emotional disturbances. The complexity of these injuries requires comprehensive rehabilitation programs that address both the physical and psychosocial aspects of recovery. Despite advances in medical care, there is a lack of standardized, accessible, and sustainable psychosocial interventions for burn survivors, particularly in the transition from hospital to home. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a nurse-led psychosocial empowerment intervention for early adjustment among burn survivors after hospital discharge.
Methods: The study adopted a quasi-experimental framework. A convenient sample of 80 adult burn survivors was randomly divided into an intervention group, receiving the psychosocial empowerment program, and a control group, continuing standard care from November 2022 to May 2023. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated using various tools that measure satisfaction with appearance, coping abilities, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The intervention focused on enhancing resilience, self-efficacy, and adaptive coping, through targeted skill building in stress management, adaptability to coping, social reintegration, emotion regulation, and problem-solving.
Results: Participants in the intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in body image satisfaction, coping abilities, and symptoms of PTSD compared to the control group.
Conclusions: The psychosocial empowerment program effectively addressed the psychosocial needs of burn survivors and enhanced their early adjustment after hospital discharge. The findings highlight the critical role of psychosocial support in the rehabilitation of burn survivors and underscore the need to integrate such interventions into standard post-discharge care. Future research should focus on the long-term effects of these interventions and their applicability in diverse settings.

Abstract Mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face considerable psychological distress. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown promise in reducing caregiver burden, but evidence in the Arab world is lacking. Problem-solving appraisal training may optimize CBT's benefits. This study evaluated a tailored CBT program emphasizing the role of problem-solving appraisal in managing distress through the process of CBT. Sixty mothers were randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to either the CBT intervention group or the control group. The CBT group received 3-month sessions incorporating problem-solving appraisal training within a CBT curriculum from October 2022 to April 2023. Problem-solving techniques are focused on equipping individuals with the skills to identify, approach, and effectively resolve problems, leading to a reduction in stress levels and an improved capacity to cope with difficult situations. All mothers completed assessments of socio-demographics such as age, level of education, marital status, occupation, and adequacy of family income, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Problem-Solving Inventory (PSI) before and after the program. The CBT group showed significant pre-to-post reductions in depression, anxiety, stress, and general psychological distress compared to controls (all

Abstract Peritoneal dialysis is a well-established renal replacement therapy for end-stage renal disease. Insertion of a peritoneal dialysis catheter has inherent complication risks. We present a case of a triple-cuff peritoneal dialysis catheter that traversed the urinary bladder on its way to its final destination and was discovered 3 months later during living donor kidney transplant. We observed a 22-year-old male patient on peritoneal dialysis who was admitted for living related kidney transplant. Intraoperatively, we discovered that the well-functioning peritoneal dialysis catheter was inserted through the urinary bladder. Diagnostic intraoperative cystogram and cystoscopy were conducted. Open removal of the peritoneal dialysis catheter and repair of entry and exit sites were performed. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged 11 days postoperatively with a functioning graft. Bladder catheterization before peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion, even in low-risk patients, is mandatory, to avoid bladder perforation. In addition to the case report, we reviewed the pertinent literature.

Abstract Introduction: The main objective of this study was to assess the cost of prostate cancer over a 1-year period from a societal perspective.
Methods: We constructed a cost-of-illness model to assess the cost of different health states of prostate cancer, metastatic or nonmetastatic, among Egyptian men. Population data and clinical parameters were extracted from the published literature. We relied on different clinical trials to extract clinical data. We considered all direct medical costs, including the costs of treatment and required monitoring, in addition to the indirect costs. The unit costs were captured from Nasr City Cancer Center and Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement, Medical Supply, and Management of Medical Technology, and resource utilization were collected from clinical trials and validated by the Expert Panel. One-way sensitivity analysis was conducted to ensure model robustness.
Results: The number of targeted patients with nonmetastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, and metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer was 215,207, 263,032, and 116,732, respectively. The total costs, in Egyptian pounds (EGP) and US dollars (USD), for the targeted patients, including drug costs and nondrug costs over a time horizon of 1 year, were EGP 41.44 billion (USD 9.010 billion) for localized prostate cancer; for metastatic prostate cancer, they doubled to EGP 85.14 billion (USD 18.510 billion), which reflects a huge burden on the Egyptian healthcare system. The drug costs for localized and metastatic prostate cancer are EGP 41,155,038,137 (USD 8.946 billion) and EGP 81,384,796,471 (USD 17.692 billion), respectively. A significant difference in nondrug costs between localized and metastatic prostate cancer was demonstrated. Nondrug costs were estimated at EGP 293,187,203 (USD 0.063 billion) for localized prostate cancer and EGP 3,762,286,092 (USD 0.817 billion) for metastatic prostate cancer. This significant difference in nondrug costs highlights the importance of early treatment due to the increased costs of progression and the burden of follow-up and productivity loss associated with metastatic prostate cancer.
Conclusion: Metastatic prostate cancer has a huge economic burden on the Egyptian healthcare system compared with localized prostate cancer owing to the increased costs of progression, follow-up, and productivity loss. This highlights the necessity of early treatment of these patients to save costs and lighten the burden of the disease on the patient, society, and economy.

Abstract Objective: Seroma after mastectomy is a bothersome problem. Topical sclerosants are one method used to reduce seroma. The aim of this study was to evaluate if spraying flaps before closure with doxycycline or bleomycin after total mastectomy can prevent seroma.
Materials and methods: After institutional review board approval, using a computer-based randomization program, a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized, superiority study was conducted during the period from the first of August 2017 to the first of August 2018. IRB proposal code was MS/17.08.66 and the trial was approved at 15/8/2017. The trial is available publicly at http://www.eulc.edu.eg/eulc_v5/Libraries/Thesis/BrowseThesisPages.aspx?fn=PublicDrawThesis&BibID=12553049. The primary outcome of the study was to assess the incidence of seroma following total mastectomy after intervention comprising spraying of skin flaps with doxycycline or bleomycin versus placebo. Patients who were candidates for total mastectomy were randomized into control, doxycycline, and bleomycin groups. The postoperative data included length of the hospital stay, pain score among the three groups, post-operative drained fluid volume, post-operative day of drain removal, complication rates including infection, flap necrosis and hematoma, the incidence of seroma and aspirated seroma volume, and total number of postoperative visits.
Results: Of 125 patients, 90 were candidates for total mastectomy. Analysis of these 90 showed that the incidence of seroma was similar; 43.4%, 40% and 40% in the control, doxycycline, and bleomycin groups, respectively (
Conclusion: Despite improved recognition and management of risk factors, seromas remain a common clinical concern in the postoperative setting of total mastectomy. These results suggest that sclerosant agents, specifically bleomycin and doxycycline, have no utility for prevention of post mastectomy seroma.
