Abstract Self-organizing memristive nanowire connectomes have been exploited for physical (in materia) implementation of brain-inspired computing paradigms. Despite having been shown that the emergent behavior relies on weight plasticity at single junction/synapse level and on wiring plasticity involving topological changes, a shift to multiterminal paradigms is needed to unveil dynamics at the network level. Here, we report on tomographical evidence of memory engrams (or memory traces) in nanowire connectomes, i.e., physicochemical changes in biological neural substrates supposed to endow the representation of experience stored in the brain. An experimental/modeling approach shows that spatially correlated short-term plasticity effects can turn into long-lasting engram memory patterns inherently related to network topology inhomogeneities. The ability to exploit both encoding and consolidation of information on the same physical substrate would open radically new perspectives for in materia computing, while offering to neuroscientists an alternative platform to understand the role of memory in learning and knowledge.

Abstract Functional dystonia, the second most common functional movement disorder, is characterized by acute or subacute onset of fixed limb, truncal, or facial posturing, incongruent with the action-induced, position-sensitive, and task-specific manifestations of dystonia. We review neurophysiological and neuroimaging data as the basis for a dysfunctional networks in functional dystonia. Reduced intracortical and spinal inhibition contributes to abnormal muscle activation, which may be perpetuated by abnormal sensorimotor processing, impaired selection of movements, and hypoactive sense of agency in the setting of normal movement preparation but abnormal connectivity between the limbic and motor networks. Phenotypic variability may be related to as-yet undefined interactions between abnormal top-down motor regulation and overactivation of areas implicated in self-awareness, self-monitoring, and active motor inhibition such as the cingulate and insular cortices. While there remain many gaps in knowledge, further combined neurophysiological and neuroimaging assessments stand to inform the neurobiological subtypes of functional dystonia and the potential therapeutic applications.

Abstract We report a case of successful implantation of a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator in a young patient with severe pectus excavatum presenting with out-of-hospital ventricular fibrillation arrest who was recently surgically repaired with a MIRPE-Nuss procedure. No complications in lead positioning were observed, and the device was tested to determine that it functioned properly.

Abstract The purpose of this work is to provide the methodological and instrumental framework for the establishment of a new absolute gravity and height reference network in Sicily. The aim of the network is to contribute to the new reference systems in the Italian area, useful for the scientific and technological activities related to the gravity field and to the proper definition of a modern height system in this region. The network is composed of 5 stations, evenly distributed to form a large mesh, which roughly covers the entire Sicily. Since four of the five selected stations were measured also in the 1990s, it was also possible to evaluate whether long-term gravity changes occurred at these sites (basic requirement for a reference network) and check the long-term ground deformation patterns, using data from the closest GPS/GNSS stations. The observed gravity changes over a time interval of about 30 years at the absolute stations and in the surrounding areas, confirm the long-term stability of the selected areas/sites.
