Abstract Summary: Data analysis and knowledge discovery has become more and more important in biology and medicine with the increasing complexity of biological datasets, but the necessarily sophisticated programming skills and in-depth understanding of algorithms needed pose barriers to most biologists and clinicians to perform such research. We have developed a modular open-source software, SIMON, to facilitate the application of 180+ state-of-the-art machine-learning algorithms to high-dimensional biomedical data. With an easy-to-use graphical user interface, standardized pipelines, and automated approach for machine learning and other statistical analysis methods, SIMON helps to identify optimal algorithms and provides a resource that empowers non-technical and technical researchers to identify crucial patterns in biomedical data. The Bigger Picture: Over the past years, technological advances have enabled the generation of large amounts of data at multiple scales. The integration of high-dimensional data is particularly important in biomedical sciences, as they can be used to identify biological mechanisms and predict clinical outcomes well in advance of their occurrence. Because of the lack of powerful analytical tools that can be used by the average biomedical researcher, translation of such knowledge has been extremely slow. We have developed an open-source software, SIMON, to facilitate the application of machine learning to high-dimensional biomedical data. In SIMON, analysis is performed using an intuitive graphical user interface and standardized, automated machine learning approach allowing non-technical researchers to identify patterns and extract knowledge from high-dimensional data and build high-quality predictive models.

Abstract In the collections from Mount Nimba (Ivory Coast) made by M. Lamotte around 1950 and deposited in the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (Paris), a new species of Trabea was found. This is the first species from West Africa. In view of the known distribution range of this wolf spider genus, the discovery is remarkable and fills a large zoogeographical gap. More species of Trabea are to be expected from highlands in West Africa.

Abstract Machine learning holds considerable promise for understanding complex biological processes such as vaccine responses. Capturing interindividual variability is essential to increase the statistical power necessary for building more accurate predictive models. However, available approaches have difficulty coping with incomplete datasets which is often the case when combining studies. Additionally, there are hundreds of algorithms available and no simple way to find the optimal one. In this study, we developed Sequential Iterative Modeling "OverNight" (SIMON), an automated machine learning system that compares results from 128 different algorithms and is particularly suitable for datasets containing many missing values. We applied SIMON to data from five clinical studies of seasonal influenza vaccination. The results reveal previously unrecognized CD4

Abstract The goblin spider genus Cinetomorpha Simon is removed from the synonymy of Gamasomorpha Karsch and treated as the senior synonym of Yumates Chamberlin and Lucetia Dumitresco Georgesco. All 41 species occur only in the New World, and the genus is divided into four species groups: the simplex group, the puberula group, the patquiana group and the itabaiana group. The following species are transferred to Cinetomorpha: C. floridana (Banks), comb. nov., and C. sedata (Gertsch Mulaik), comb. nov., from Opopaea; C. angela (Chamberlin), comb. nov., and C. nesophila (Chamberlin), comb. nov., from Yumates; and C. patquiana (Birabén) and C. platensis (Birabén), comb. nov., from Gamasomorpha. Gamasomorpha wasmanniae Mello-Leitão and Lucetia distincta Dumitresco Georgesco are newly synonymized with C. simplex Simon. Two species currently in Gamasomorpha are transferred to Hexapopha Platnick Berniker: H. brasiliana (Bristowe), comb. nov. and H. m-scripta (Birabén), comb. nov. The following 31 species are newly described: C. adaga Ott Bonaldo (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru); C. atlantica Ott Brescovit (Brazil); C. baja Ott Ubick (Mexico); C. bandolera Ott Harvey (Mexico USA); C. boraceia Ott Brescovit (Argentina and Brazil); C. campana Ott Harvey (Chile); C. central Ott Brescovit (Brazil); C. chicote Ott Bonaldo (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru); C. concepcion Ott Harvey (Chile); C. iguazu Ott Brescovit (Argentina and Brazil); C. itabaiana Ott Brescovit (Brazil); C. laguna Ott Ubick (Mexico); C. lavras Ott Brescovit (Brazil); C. longisetosa Ott Harvey (Costa Rica and Brazil); C. lorenzo Ott Harvey (Guatemala); C. loreto Ott Bonaldo (Peru); C. nayarit Ott Harvey (Mexico); C. orellana Ott Bonaldo (Ecuador); C. pauferro Ott Brescovit (Brazil); C. peluda Ott Harvey (Chile); C. pinheiral Ott Brescovit (Brazil); C. pocone Ott Brescovit (Brazil); C. punctata Ott Brescovit (Brazil); C. quillota Ott Harvey (Chile); C. rinconada Ott Harvey (Chile); C. santamaria Ott Brescovit (Argentina); C. similis Ott Brescovit (Brazil); C. sternalis Ott Bonaldo (Brazil); C. sur Ott Ubick (Mexico); C. waorani Ott Bonaldo (Ecuador); and C. zero Ott Harvey (Mexico to Venezuela).

Abstract This paper examines the Apostle Peter as a personification of the relatively new leadership model, Transformative Leadership, which focuses on the leader’s role as an ethical steward who owes “covenantal duties” to those whom (s)he serves. We begin by briefly explaining this new leadership model, then explaining how Peter’s leadership behavior fits the transformative leadership model with its accompanying moral and ethical obligations. Focusing on the application of the six leadership perspectives in the model, we provide twelve propositions that incorporate insights from Peter’s experiences and that apply to the modern leader. The third section of this paper provides a brief summary of the contributions of this paper.

Perspectives in vascular surgery and endovascular therapy

Abstract: ... We report a case of a Bard Simon Nitinol permanent IVC filter that was removed by using percutaneous ...

Abstract Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are used to treat thromboembolic disease when there is a contraindication to anticoagulation or failure of therapeutic anticoagulation therapy. Although there are retrievable IVC filters available, permanent IVC filters remain the most commonly placed IVC filters worldwide. Permanent IVC filters have been associated with long-term complications such as IVC thrombosis and obstruction, migration, and erosion into surrounding structures. Such complications may require removal of permanent IVC filters, which has been previously described with open surgery involving venotomy of the IVC. We report a case of a Bard Simon Nitinol permanent IVC filter that was removed by using percutaneous endovascular techniques.

Abstract The African lycosid genus Amblyothele Simon is revised and its sub-family placement clarified. A diagnosis is provided for the genus in relation to other genera in the sub-family Piratinae. The type species, Amblyothele albocincta Simon, 1910, is redescribed as is A. togona Roewer, 1960. Six new species, Amblyothele atlantica sp. n. (♀), A. ecologica sp. n. (♀), A. hamatula sp. n. (♂), A. kivumba sp. n. (♂), A. latedissipata sp. n. (♂♀) and A. longipes sp. n. (♂♀) are described. Amblyothele jaundea Roewer, 1960 is removed from the genus and transferred to Pardosa. An illustrated key to the species is provided.
