    Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has posed a significant threat not only to health outcomes but also to other societal sectors, including the educational system. Apart from youth education, colleges and universities are characterized by the integration of in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge in young adulthood. Our observations in this study suggest that college fairs, sports matches, and extracurricular activities can be safely resumed when population-level immunity has reached herd protection.

    Abstract Background: There is a lack of information about the effects of untreated solitary osteochondroma (SO) on longitudinal growth of the lower extremities in children and adolescents. This study aimed to assess the coronal alignment and length of the lower extremity in patients with SO around the knee and to identify the factors related to the development of deformities.
    Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 111 patients diagnosed with SO around the knee. The patients were classified into 2 groups depending on the location of the SO: 51 in the distal femur and 60 in the proximal tibia. Characteristics of the lesions, such as type, location, size, and distance from the joint line, were determined. Radiographic analysis of the lower limbs included mechanical lateral distal femoral angle, mechanical medial proximal tibial angle, whole-leg length, femoral length, and tibial length.
    Results: The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 12.3±3.4 years. No statistically significant differences were found between the affected and contralateral sides for mechanical lateral distal femoral angle and mechanical medial proximal tibial angle in either the distal femur or the proximal tibia groups. In patients with femoral lesions, the femoral and whole-leg lengths were significantly shorter on the affected side than on the unaffected side ( P <0.001 and 0.002, respectively), and the mean differences were 2.1±3.6 and 2.1±4.4 mm, respectively. Univariate logistic regression analysis did not reveal any factors associated with limb length discrepancy (LLD). In patients with tibial lesions, no statistically significant differences were found in LLD.
    Conclusions: SOs around the knee did not cause clinically significant deformity of the lower extremity. However, in contrast to proximal tibia lesions, SO in the distal femur was associated with the shortening of the affected limb. Consideration should be given to the development of LLD in skeletally immature children with SO in the distal femur.

    Abstract Cognitive aging widely varies among individuals due to different stress experiences throughout the lifespan and vulnerability of neurocognitive mechanisms. To understand the heterogeneity of cognitive aging, we investigated the effect of early adulthood stress (EAS) on three different hippocampus-dependent memory tasks: the novel object recognition test (assessing recognition memory: RM), the paired association test (assessing episodic-like memory: EM), and trace fear conditioning (assessing trace memory: TM). Two-month-old rats were exposed to chronic mild stress for 6 weeks and underwent behavioral testing either 2 weeks or 20 months later. The results show that stress and aging impaired different types of memory tasks to varying degrees. RM is affected by combined effect of stress and aging. EM became less precise in EAS animals. TM, especially the contextual memory, showed impairment in aging although EAS attenuated the aging effect, perhaps due to its engagement in emotional memory systems. To further explore the neural underpinnings of these multi-faceted effects, we measured long-term potentiation (LTP), neural density, and synaptic density in the dentate gyrus (DG). Both stress and aging reduced LTP. Additionally, the synaptic density per neuron showed a further reduction in the stress aged group. In summary, EAS modulates different forms of memory functions perhaps due to their substantial or partial dependence on the functional integrity of the hippocampus. The current results suggest that lasting alterations in hippocampal circuits following EAS could potentially generate remote effects on individual variability in cognitive aging, as demonstrated by performance in multiple types of memory.

    Abstract Immunosuppressants are increasingly being used in the clinic to manage immune-related adverse effects. Consequently, the incidence of secondary infections associated with immunosuppression is increasing. However, little is known about primary infections during immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment without immunosuppressants. We aimed to evaluate primary infectious diseases during antiprogrammed death ligand-1 immunotherapy without immunosuppressants. We retrospectively screened medical records of 233 patients who underwent ICI treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer between January 2014 and May 2018 at National Cancer Center, Republic of Korea. Subsequently, we evaluated the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of selected patients hospitalized for potential infectious disease without immunosuppressive treatment (n=80). Eight cases (3.4%) were identified as bacterial pneumonia (n=5) and cellulitis, inflamed epidermoid cyst, and wound infection (n=1 each). The bacterial pathogens Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae were identified in 4 patients with pneumonia. The period between the start of ICI treatment and infection varied between 3 and 189 days (median, 24.5 days). Five (62.5%) patients were infected within a month after ICI treatment initiation. All patients were treated with empirical antibiotics and discharged without complications. The median progression-free and overall survival for ICI treatment was 11.5 and 25.5 months, respectively. Six patients experienced ICI-associated adverse effects postinfection: Herpes zoster infection (n=4) and pneumonitis (n=2). Infectious disease independent of immunosuppression is a rare, but possible event in patients with lung cancer receiving ICI treatment. Clinical awareness would enable prompt diagnosis of primary infection during immunotherapy.

    Abstract Objective: To develop an experimental porcine model of tricuspid regurgitation using two induction routes: the inferior vena cava and superior vena cava.
    Methods: Tricuspid regurgitation was generated using the loop wire cutting method. The tricuspid regurgitation jet direction was controlled by accessing the valve through the inferior (n = 7) or superior (n = 6) vena cava. The occurrence, direction, and progression of tricuspid regurgitation were assessed postoperatively, and echocardiography was performed at 4 to 6 weeks. Right heart dilatation was assessed using computed tomography after 6 weeks.
    Results: Moderate to severe or torrential tricuspid regurgitation occurred immediately after the procedure in 12 of 13 animals. The jet was directed toward the septum in five of seven animals in the inferior vena cava group and toward the posterolateral side in four of six animals in the superior vena cava group. The dimensions of the right heart (right atrium, ventricle, and tricuspid valve annulus) were significantly enlarged at the 4- to 6-week follow-up echocardiographic examination and confirmed to be enlarged by computed tomography, independent of the route used.
    Conclusion: The loop wire cutting method successfully induced a disease model of tricuspid regurgitation while controlling the regurgitation jet direction via two procedural routes.

    Abstract Our study investigated the embryo-ototoxic effects of deodorant2 (DA2) on zebrafish embryos, which serve as valuable model organisms due to genetic and physiological similarities to humans. We focused on understanding DA2's impact on zebrafish hair cells, which are vital for sensory perception and balance regulation. DA2, provided by the Ministry of Environment, Republic of Korea, was used at 460 μg/mL in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), with a 0.43% DMSO solvent control group. Three experiments, each using 10 zebrafish specimens from each group, showed an initial 13% hair cell count reduction in the DA2-exposed group. Subsequent experiments demonstrated reductions of 37% and 22%, each with one mortality case. Statistical analysis revealed a significant 24% hair cell count reduction in the DA2-exposed group. We also assessed DA2's impact on zebrafish behavior. Although not statistically significant, differences in distances traveled (0.33-0.39, 95% confidence interval: -0.46-1.1,

    Abstract Saccharification is one of the most noteworthy processes in biomass-based biorefineries. In particular, the lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase has recently emerged as an oxidative cleavage-recalcitrant polysaccharide; however, there is insufficient information regarding its application to actual biomass. Accordingly, this study focused optimizing the recombinant expression level of a bacterial lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase from Thermobifida fusca (TfLPMO), which was characterized as a cellulolytic enzyme. Finally, the synergistic effect of the lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase and a commercial cellulase cocktail on the saccharification of agrowaste was investigated. TfLPMO functioned on various cellulosic and hemicellulosic substrates, and the combination of TfLPMO with cellulase exhibited a synergistic effect on the saccharification of agrowastes, resulting in a 19.2% and 14.1% increase in reducing sugars from rice straw and corncob, respectively. The results discussed herein can lead to an in-depth understanding of enzymatic saccharification and suggest viable options for valorizing agrowastes as renewable feedstocks in biorefineries.
