Abstract Objectives: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have a high prevalence of nausea, vomiting, postprandial fullness, and abdominal pain; these are symptoms that are similar to those in gastroparesis (GP). The aim of this study was to assess the association between GP and RA and the determinants of GP.
Methods: We identified patients with RA and patients with GP from the 2012-2014 National Inpatient Sample database. The
Results: Of 1,514,960 patients with RA, there were 1070 hospitalizations in which a primary diagnosis of GP was identified. The GP odds ratio in RA was found to be 1.36 and the 95% confidence interval was 1.24 to 1.49 (
Conclusions: An increased likelihood of 36% of GP among patients with RA was determined. White and Black patients younger than age 65 showed a greater risk of developing GP.

Abstract A 21-year-old male presented with chief complaints of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting and was found to have portal vein thrombosis (PVT) on computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen, which was redemonstrated on ultrasound. Thrombophilia workup was negative except that patient was heterozygous for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene mutation. Homocysteine levels were normal. The patient was started on enoxaparin and discharged on apixaban with the plan to continue anticoagulation for at least six months. Follow-up MRI after four months showed interval improvement of the main portal vein thrombus with the use of Eliquis.

Abstract Proximal myopathy presents as generalized muscle weakness commonly involving the muscles of upper and/or lower limbs. Toxins, long-term use of statins, corticosteroids, alcohol, SGLT2 inhibitors, COVID-19 vaccination, and antimalarials have been attributed to its development. In endocrine and metabolic disorders, adrenal dysfunction including both overproduction and insufficiency of the adrenal gland hormones has been reported to cause myopathy. Moreover, parathyroid and thyroid disorders along with pituitary gland disorders can also directly or indirectly contribute to this condition. In idiopathic inflammatory myopathies including polymyositis, dermatomyositis, inclusion body myositis (IBM), and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Sjögren's Syndrome, and overlap syndromes, moderate to severe muscle weakness has been observed. IBM has been reported to be the most prevalent acquired myopathy above the age of 50. Hereditary or congenital myopathies include limb girdle muscular dystrophies, facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, and proximal myotonic myopathy. In addition to these, glycogen storage diseases such as the McArdle disease can also cause fast exhaustion, myalgia, and cramping in working muscles. It is pertinent to mention here that a class of hereditary metabolic myopathies, referred to as "lipid deposition myopathy" causes lipids to accumulate in skeletal muscle fibers, leading to lesions and degeneration. Among viral causes, HIV, dengue virus, influenza virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, SARS-CoV2 are also associated with muscle weakness. Sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease, can also manifest as muscle weakness and myalgia. Owing to this complicated pathophysiology of proximal myopathy, this review aims to summarize the existing literature on conditions associated with this phenomenon and other recent developments that have been made regarding events leading to development of generalized muscle weakness. To the authors' knowledge this is the first narrative review that discusses causes and conditions associated with proximal myopathy in thorough detail.

Abstract Nanotechnology has widely been used in a variety of fields including agriculture, since the last few decades. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect on the growth of Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) under exposure of 0, 100, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500 mg TiO2 nanoparticles (TNPs) kg-1 of soil. TNPs in anatase form with a size of 74 nm, complex and spherical in shape were synthesized. Two different soils 1) Loamy Soil and 2) Sandy Soil were used under low pH (about 6.5) and high (original) pH of the soils. The effects of TNPs were investigated on plant lengths, total fresh and dry biomass. The plants were exposed to TNPs for about 3 months. It was observed that TNPs had a generally negative impact on the length of plants grown in sandy soil (both low and original pH) and loamy soil with low pH. The measurements of samples with the original pH of loamy soil showed a positive relationship with increased TNPs concentration. Overall the dry biomass of plants grew in (both low and original pH) loamy soil and sandy soil with low pH had increased with increase in concentration of TNPs, while in sandy soil with original pH, the biomass of plants decreased with increased concentration of TNPs. Phosphorous analysis on rhizosphere soil showed correspondence with biomass results. Generally, it was observed that type of soil and pH of soil affected the growth of spinach plants under applied TNPs.

Abstract Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a rare disorder caused by C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency or dysfunction. Patients with HAE usually present without urticaria or pruritis affecting the skin, upper airway, or the gastrointestinal tract. They can also present with involvement of unusual sites making the diagnosis challenging and leading to unnecessary testing and complications. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is crucial to prevent mortality and morbidity associated with acute flare. Here we present, what is believed to be second case of isolated involvement of the jejunum from an attack of HAE.

Abstract Background/aims: Crohn's disease (CD) results in significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare burden. This study evaluated the temporal trends of CD hospitalizations with a fistula over the last decade to understand the outcomes of severe CD.
Methods: National Inpatient Sample database from 2009 to 2019 was used to identify CD hospitalizations with a fistula. The outcomes of interest included temporal trend analysis of length of stay (LOS), mean inpatient cost (MIC), and mortality.
Results: There was an increase in the total number of fistulizing CD hospitalizations from 5,386 in 2009 to 12,900 in 2019 (p<0.01). The mean age decreased from 44.9±0.6 to 41.8±0.4 years for the study period (p<0.01). Caucasians were the predominant ethnicity, followed by Africans, Hispanics, and others (p<0.001). The mean LOS for fistulizing CD hospitalizations decreased significantly from 11.57±0.09 days in 2009 to 7.20±0.05 days in 2019 (p<0.001). There was a significant decrease in inpatient mortality from 1.72% in 2009 to 0.73% in 2019 (p<0.01). The MIC did not have a significant trend. There was a decreasing trend toward partial/total colectomies, rectosigmoid, and small bowel surgeries from 2009 to 2019 (p<0.001).
Conclusions: There has been a rise in CD hospitalizations with fistulizing disease in the last decade. Despite this, the mortality and inpatient LOS have been decreasing significantly. In addition, the increase in CD hospitalizations with fistulizing disease has had no significant effect on hospital costs.
