    Abstract Background: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) stands as the most prevalent form of glomerulonephritis and ranks among the leading causes of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Regrettably, we continue to grapple with the absence of dependable diagnostic markers and specific therapeutic agents for IgAN. Therefore, this study endeavors to explore novel biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets in IgAN, while also considering their relevance in the context of tumors.
    Methods: We gathered IgAN datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Subsequently, leveraging these datasets, we conducted an array of analyses, encompassing differential gene expression, weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), machine learning, receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, gene expression validation, clinical correlations, and immune infiltration. Finally, we carried out pan-cancer analysis based on hub gene.
    Results: We obtained 1391 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in GSE93798 and 783 DGEs in GSE14795, respectively. identifying 69 common genes for further investigation. Subsequently, GMFG was identified the hub gene based on machine learning. In the verification set and the training set, the GMFG was higher in the IgAN group than in the healthy group and all of the GMFG area under the curve (AUC) was more 0.8. In addition, GMFG has a close relationship with the prognosis of malignancies and a range of immune cells.
    Conclusions: Our study suggests that GMFG could serve as a promising novel biomarker and potential therapeutic target for both IgAN and certain types of tumors.

    Abstract In this study, the engineering background of No. 2 complex connecting passage of Binhu Road Station/Jinhu Square Station of Nanning Metro Line 3 is investigated, where the artificial ground freezing technique is adopted. A three-dimensional finite element model is established to investigate the temperature development of the frozen soil curtain, with a simulation of the dynamic evolution of the frosted soil curtain. The finite element model is validated by comparing the overall trend of the measured temperature value and the resulting temperature value, which are roughly the same. According to the design scheme, the weakest part of the whole frozen soil curtain is the top of the bell mouth where the downhole tunnel intersects the connecting passage. It is recommended to make a row of smaller freezing holes to enhance the freezing effect in this area. The thickness of the frozen soil curtain reached 1.75 m or more, indicating that the whole frozen soil curtain meets the design requirements and shows the right features for excavation construction. After freezing for 40 days, the average thickness of the frozen soil curtain is 2.4 m, indicating that the freezing effect meets the design requirements. The project can be successfully carried out, which suggests that the underneath passage construction is feasible. As a result, the results of the numerical model are applicable for comparable projects using artificially freezing ground in metro station construction.

    Abstract The frequency of detection of renal masses has increased over recent decades, causing a concurrent increase in early intervention by surgery. Growing recognition that this approach was contributing to overtreatment led to the broader use of preoperative renal mass biopsy (RMB) by core biopsy and/or fine-needle aspiration. Because more options for management, such as active surveillance and personalized therapy, are becoming increasingly available, a diagnosis by RMB is becoming a valuable tool for risk stratification and clinical decision making. Guidelines from various professional organizations have outlined situations in which RMB should be used, and it has been shown to be safe and effective. Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) using touch preparations of core biopsy or fine-needle aspiration smears provides an immediate assessment of adequacy and appropriate triage. ROSE also ensures sufficient material to perform immunohistochemistry and molecular studies for more accurate characterization of renal masses and personalized treatment. The integral role of cytopathology laboratories in precision medicine can also be successfully used in optimizing the workup of RMB from ROSE to final diagnosis, prognostication, and personalized management of kidney tumors. Herein, the authors review their extensive experience working together with interventional radiology and urology colleagues to use core biopsy and ROSE at the time of RMB for diagnosis and management of these lesions.

    Abstract Tinnitus, characterized by phantom sound perception, is a highly disruptive condition lacking clearly effective treatments. Its complex neural mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a promising neuroimaging tool well-suited for assessing tinnitus due to its quietness, portability, and ability to directly measure cortical hemodynamic responses. This study timely summarizes the recent applications of fNIRS in investigating tinnitus pathology, correlating neuroimaging biomarkers with symptom severity, and evaluating treatment efficacy. Further studies with larger samples are warranted to reproduce existing findings. Thus, fNIRS appears to be a promising tool in tinnitus research. Addressing technical limitations, optimizing control groups, advancing data analysis, integrating standardized, and individualized experimental protocols can facilitate the extended and robust utilization of fNIRS in tinnitus research.

    Abstract Transparent paper manufactured from wood fibers is emerging as a promising, cost-effective, and carbon-neutral alternatives to plastics. However, fully exploring their mechanical properties is one of the most pressing challenges. In this work, a strong yet tough transparent paper with superior folding endurance is prepared by rationally altering the native fiber structure. Microwave-assisted choline chloride/lactic acid deep eutectic solvent (DES) pulping is first utilized to isolate wood fibers from spruce wood. During this process, the S1 layer within the fibers is partially disrupted, forming protruding microfibrils that play a crucial role in enhancing cellulose accessibility. Subsequently, carboxymethylation treatment is applied to yield uniformly swollen carboxymethylated wood fibers (CM fibers), which improves the interaction between CM fibers during papermaking. The as-prepared transparent paper not only shows a 90% light transmittance (550 nm) but also exhibits impressive mechanical properties, including a folding endurance of over 26 000, a tensile strength of 248.4 MPa, and a toughness of 15.6 MJ m

    Abstract Increasing evidence demonstrates the psychological benefits of nature contact. However, the evidence is often established at the population level, and the individual differences in the psychological benefits gained from nature are considered negligible variations. In this study, we performed a cross-sectional online survey in Brisbane and Sydney, Australia, from April 15th and May 15th, 2021 around one year after the first covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. The results show that individuals with a stronger connection to nature are linked with a lower level of stress and anxiety with increased frequency in public greenspace visits, while such an association is less clear for individuals with a weaker connection to nature. We also find that, through the answer to an open-ended question, individuals with a lower connection to nature tend to mention nature-related words less as the reason for visiting greenspace. This indicates that a person's connection to nature is linked with how they interact with nature and thus might determine whether and how much psychological benefit a person gains from experiencing nature.
