    Abstract Objective: To investigate the correlations between heart rate variability (HRV) and skin conductance (SC) in two populations under three different situations.
    Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled patients with somatic symptom disorder comorbid with depression and anxiety and healthy individuals without a psychiatric history. The biological signals were measured under three conditions: resting state, during a cognitive task and during paced breathing. Pearson's correlation analysis and the generalized estimating equation were used to examine the correlations between SC and HRV in the two populations under the three situations.
    Results: The study enrolled 97 patients with somatic symptom disorder comorbid with depression and anxiety and 96 healthy individuals. In healthy individuals, the ratio of low-frequency power to high frequency power (LF/HF) and normalized LF (LF%) were significantly correlated with SC in the resting state and during a cognitive task, but the correlation coefficients were low level. In patients with somatic symptom disorder comorbid with depression and anxiety, LF/HF and LF% did not show significant correlations with SC under any situation.
    Conclusions: The two different populations and three situations might have affected the significance of the LF/HF-SC and LF%-SC correlations. The generally low correlations indicate that LF/HF and LF% cannot fully reflect the sympathetic cholinergic activity represented by SC.

    Abstract Thoracic trauma often results in immediate or delayed hemorrhage. There are few cases of purulent pericarditis with pericardial tamponade reported in the literature. If a devastating complication develops several weeks following blunt thoracic trauma, the causal relationship with the thoracic trauma event is less evident. As such, accurate diagnosis and subsequent effective treatment implementation is likely to be delayed. Herein, we present the case of a 46-year-old male patient with delayed purulent pericarditis that led to cardiac tamponade 2 weeks after the initial trauma.

    Abstract This study presents a comprehensive assessment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the blubber of a stranded blue whale found on the coast of Taiwan. The analysis included polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The whale exhibited evident signs of emaciation, including low body weight, reduced blubber fat content, and thin blubber thickness. The dominant fatty acid type detected in the blubber was short-chain monounsaturated fatty acids (SC-MUFA), known to aid in thermoregulation. Stable isotope ratios indicated that the blue whale occupied a lower trophic position compared to a fin whale, suggesting its proximity to krill habitats in the Southern Ocean for feeding. The average concentrations of DDTs (1089.2 ± 4.7 ng/g lw; ΣDDT) and PCBs (1057.1 ± 49.8 ng/g lw) in the blubber were almost one order of magnitude higher than PAHs (41.7 ± 10.0 ng/g lw), HCB (70.6 ± 2. ng/g lw), and PBDEs (7.2 ± 1.2 ng/g lw). Pollutant concentrations in this individual blue whale were comparable to levels found in Norway, higher than those found in Chile, and notably lower than those found in Canada and Mexico. Calculating the biomagnification factor (BMF) for the POPs from krill (Euphausia superba) to the blue whale revealed significant bioaccumulation of pollutants in this particular whale. Additional research is imperative to achieve a thorough comprehension of bioaccumulation of POPs and their potential toxicological impacts on whale health.

    Abstract Objective: This study evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of interleukin-1 (IL-1) blockade for patients with COVID-19.
    Methods: The PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant articles from their inception to 25 September 2022. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that assessed the clinical efficacy and safety of IL-1 blockade in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 were included.
    Results: This meta-analysis included seven RCTs. No significant difference in the all-cause mortality rate of patients with COVID-19 was observed between the IL-1 blockade and control groups (7.7 vs. 10.5%, odds ratio [OR] = 0.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.57-1.22;
    Conclusions: IL-1 blockade does not provide increased survival benefits in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, but it may reduce the need for MV. Furthermore, it is a safe agent for use in the treatment of COVID-19.>.

    Abstract AbstractObjective This study evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of interleukin-1 (IL-1) blockade for patients with COVID-19.Methods The PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant articles from their inception to 25 September 2022. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that assessed the clinical efficacy and safety of IL-1 blockade in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 were included.Results This meta-analysis included seven RCTs. No significant difference in the all-cause mortality rate of patients with COVID-19 was observed between the IL-1 blockade and control groups (7.7 vs. 10.5%, odds ratio [OR] = 0.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.57–1.22; I2 = 18%). However, the study group was at significantly lower risk of requiring mechanical ventilation (MV) compared with the control group (OR = 0.53, 95% CI 0.32–0.86; I2 = 24%). Finally, the risk of adverse events was similar between the two groups.Conclusions IL-1 blockade does not provide increased survival benefits in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, but it may reduce the need for MV. Furthermore, it is a safe agent for use in the treatment of COVID-19.>
