    Abstract Background: Nursing students must learn about the core values of nursing care. Thus, education designed to improve their caring ability should be included in nursing curricula. Nursing students' caring ability is reportedly affected by emotional intelligence and resilience. However, no studies have explored whether these qualities have mediating effects on the relationship between nursing students' type D personality and their caring ability.
    Objectives: To examine the mediating effects of emotional intelligence and resilience on the relationship between type D personality and caring ability in nursing students.
    Design: A cross-sectional, descriptive survey study.
    Setting: The study was conducted in South Korea.
    Participants: 278 nursing students.
    Methods: Type D personality, emotional intelligence, resilience, and caring ability were measured using questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlations, regression analysis, and Hayes' Process Macro using the bootstrap method.
    Results: Results indicated that type D personality significantly predicted emotional intelligence (B = -6.80, p < .001), resilience (B = -6.77, p < .001), and caring ability (B = -7.20, p = .001). Emotional intelligence mediated the relationship between type D personality and caring ability.
    Conclusion: Interventions to improve the caring ability of nursing students should include an evaluation of nursing students' emotional intelligence and strategies to promote their emotional intelligence.

    Abstract Astaxanthin (AST)-encapsulated nanoparticles were fabricated using glycol chitosan (Chito) through electrostatic interaction (abbreviated as ChitoAST) to solve the aqueous solubility of astaxanthin and improve its biological activity. AST was dissolved in organic solvents and then mixed with chitosan solution, followed by a dialysis procedure. All formulations of ChitoAST nanoparticles showed small diameters (less than 400 nm) with monomodal distributions. Analysis with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy confirmed the specific peaks of AST and Chito. Furthermore, ChitoAST nanoparticles were formed through electrostatic interactions between Chito and AST.     Abstract Purpose: To determine subjective symptoms and medical history of patients with intermittent exotropia in a large study population.
    Methods: The Korean Intermittent Exotropia Multicenter Study (KIEMS) is a nationwide, observational, cross-sectional, multicenter study conducted by the Korean Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (KAPOS) including 5385 patients with intermittent exotropia. Subjective symptoms and medical history of patients with intermittent exotropia were extracted by a comprehensive survey based on a self-administered questionnaire according to the study protocol of the KIEMS.
    Results: The mean age of symptom onset was 5.5 years of age. The most common symptom reported in patients with intermittent exotropia was photophobia (52.1%), followed by diplopia at near (7.3%) and distance fixation (6.2%). Preterm birth was found in 8.8%, and 4.1% had perinatal complications. A family history of strabismus was present in 14.9%, and 5.5% of patients had a family member who underwent strabismus surgery.
    Conclusions: The KIEMS is one of the largest clinical studies on intermittent exotropia. Intermittent exotropia frequently caused photophobia and diplopia, and patients with a family history was not uncommon.

    Abstract Pseudogymnoascus is a psychrophilic fungus, which is a genus widely distributed in cold regions around the world. Recently, the presence of Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), the causative agent of white-nose syndrome (WNS) belonging to Pseudogymnoascus, has been reported in neighboring countries of Korea. However, no investigation on Pd has been reported in Korea. In this study, cave-inhabiting bats and their habitats were investigated in terms of the diversity of cave fungi, and we tried to confirm the presence of Pd. Three caves suspected of hosting Pd were selected, and 83 environmental and 53 bat samples were collected. A total of 154 fungal strains belonging to 31 different genera were isolated, and 20 of 154 were confirmed to belong to Pseudogymnoascus. Pd-diagnostic PCR was performed to check whether Pd was present in the isolated Pseudogymnoascus, and seven positives were confirmed. However, phylogenetic analyses revealed that no isolates belonged or were closely related to the clade with Pd. Although samples were collected from limited areas, undescribed Pseudogymnoascus species were isolated, and it was confirmed that Korean isolates were distributed in various clades. In conclusion, it is hypothesized that Korean Pseudogymnoascus presents high diversity.

    Abstract Dermal papilla cells (DPCs) are a rich source of nutrients and secrete multiple growth factors that can affect hair growth. As oxidative stress leads to hair loss in humans, it is considered to be one of the factors that can impair the function of DPCs. Herb-derived phytochemicals exhibit potent antioxidant activities; therefore, this study investigated whether a set of essential oils (lavender, lemongrass, rosemary, and chamomile oils) promote the hair-growth activity of DPCs. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) increased markedly in ultraviolet B-irradiated DPCs (50 mJ/cm 2 ) and were efficiently blocked by essential oils. Essential oils upregulated the mRNA and protein levels of phase II enzymes (detoxifying and antioxidant), including heme oxygenase-1, NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase-1, and glutathione S-transferase pi. They also upregulated and activated nuclear factor E2-related factor 2, an essential transcription factor for phase II enzymes. Regarding biomarkers for hair growth, essential oils significantly increased vascular endothelial cell growth factor and insulin-like growth factor-1 mRNA levels. In conclusion, phytochemicals in essential oils enhance hair growth through ROS-scavenging activity in DPCs.

    Abstract Purpose: To investigate changes in vertical strabismus and extorsion in patients with intermittent exotropia and mild unilateral inferior oblique muscle overaction (IOOA) who underwent horizontal muscle surgery without vertical or oblique muscle surgery.
    Methods: The medical records of 41 patients were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were followed up for at least 6 months after surgery. Fundus photography was performed before and after surgery, and the sum of the angles of torsion in both eyes was used to measure changes in extorsion using ImageJ software. The enrolled patients were divided into two groups according to the degree of IOOA: patients with grade 1 IOOA were placed in +1 IOOA group and those with grade 2 IOOA in +2 IOOA group. The pre- and postoperative angles of horizontal and vertical strabismus and extorsion were compared between the two groups.
    Results: The +1 IOOA and +2 IOOA groups included 24 and 17 patients, respectively. The angle of preoperative exotropia did not differ significantly: 25.54 ± 5.68 prism diopters (PD) and 25.65 ± 8.11 PD in the +1 IOOA and +2 IOOA groups, respectively. In the +1 IOOA and +2 IOOA groups, hypertropia was 2.67 ± 1.52 PD and 2.82 ± 1.13 PD, respectively, and extorsion angles were 7.14 ± 2.77° and 7.94 ± 2.87°, respectively. As the IOOA degree increased, the extent of hypertropia and extorsion also increased. However, there were no significant differences between the two groups. Postoperative angles of hypertropia and extorsion significantly decreased in both groups (p < 0.001) after surgery. The degree of change in hypertropia and extorsion was not significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.563 and p = 0.354, respectively).
    Conclusions: Hypertropia and extorsion improved significantly after horizontal muscle surgery in patients with mild unilateral IOOA and intermittent exotropia. There was no significant difference in the improvement in hypertropia or extorsion between IOOA grades I and II.

    Abstract Recently, the International Panel for Climate Change released the 6th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) climate change scenarios with shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs). The SSP scenarios result in significant changes to climate variables in climate projections compared to their predecessor, the representative concentration pathways from the CMIP5. Therefore, it is necessary to examine whether the CMIP6 scenarios differentially impact plant–disease ecosystems compared to the CMIP5 scenarios. In this study, we used the EPIRICE-LB model to simulate and compare projected rice blast disease epidemics in the Korean Peninsula using five selected family global climate models (GCMs) of the CMIP5 and CMIP6 for two forcing scenarios. We found a similar decrease in rice blast epidemics in both CMIP scenarios; however, this decrease was greater in the CMIP6 scenarios. In addition, distinctive epidemic trends were found in North Korea, where the rice blast epidemics increase until the mid-2040s but decrease thereafter until 2100, with different spatial patterns of varying magnitudes. Controlling devastating rice blast diseases will remain important during the next decades in North Korea, where appropriate chemical controls are unavailable due to chronic economic and political issues. Overall, our analyses using the new CMIP6 scenarios reemphasized the importance of developing effective control measures against rice blast for specific high-risk areas and the need for a universal impact and vulnerability assessment platform for plant–disease ecosystems that can be used with new climate change scenarios in the future.
