Abstract The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS has studied the diffractive dissociation of negative pions into the π- π- π+ final state using a 190  GeV/c pion beam hitting a lead target. A partial wave analysis has been performed on a sample of 420,000 events taken at values of the squared 4-momentum transfer t' between 0.1 and 1  GeV2/c2. The well-known resonances a1(1260), a2(1320), and π2(1670) are clearly observed. In addition, the data show a significant natural-parity exchange production of a resonance with spin-exotic quantum numbers J(PC)=1-+ at 1.66  GeV/c2 decaying to ρπ. The resonant nature of this wave is evident from the mass-dependent phase differences to the J(PC)=2-+ and 1++ waves. From a mass-dependent fit a resonance mass of (1660±10(-64)(+0))  MeV/c2 and a width of (269±21(-64)(+42))  MeV/c2 are deduced, with an intensity of (1.7±0.2)% of the total intensity.

Abstract Cyclic nucleotides are the most diversified category of second messengers and are found in all organisms modulating diverse pathways. While cAMP and cGMP have been studied over 50 years, cyclic di-nucleotide signaling in eukaryotes emerged only recently with the anti-viral molecule 2´3´cGAMP. Recent breakthrough discoveries have revealed not only the astonishing chemical diversity of cyclic nucleotides but also surprisingly deep-rooted evolutionary origins of cyclic oligo-nucleotide signaling pathways and structural conservation of the proteins involved in their synthesis and signaling. Here we discuss how enzyme-centered approaches have paved the way for the identification of several cyclic nucleotide signals, focusing on the advantages and challenges associated with deciphering the activation mechanisms of such enzymes.

Abstract Background: Critical nursing shortages have required many health care organizations to restructure nursing care delivery models. At a tertiary health care center, 150 registered practical nurses were integrated into acute inpatient care settings.
Problem: A mechanism to continuously monitor the impact of this staffing change was not available.
Approach: Leveraging current literature and consultation with external peers, metrics were compiled and categorized according to Donabedian's Structure Process Outcome Framework. Consultation with internal subject matter experts determined the final metrics.
Outcomes: The Patient care, Utility, Logistics, Systemic Evaluation (PULSE) electronic dashboard was developed, capturing metrics from multiple internal databases and presenting real-time composites of validated indicators.
Conclusion: The PULSE dashboard is a practical means of enabling nursing leadership to evaluate the impact of change and to make evidence-informed decisions about nursing care delivery at our organization.

Abstract Midazolam is a commonly used, well-tolerated, anxiolytic, sedative, anesthesia induction agent, and an adjunct for procedural sedation that is used widely in the emergency department. The ability to administer midazolam via multiple routes, including intranasal, makes it a particularly common choice for use in children. Intranasal administration is safe, easy, and well tolerated and has been shown to be an effective method of obtaining anxiolysis and/or sedation. Adverse drug reactions, including allergic reactions, can occur with any medication. However, anaphylaxis is an uncommon phenomenon from midazolam. Despite being one of the most common medications used in the emergency department and operating room, there are only a handful of unequivocal cases of anaphylaxis secondary to midazolam. The rarity of this presentation may lead to delays in care and potential adverse outcomes as a result. We present one such case of a 10-year-old patient who experienced anaphylaxis after administration of intranasal midazolam to facilitate a computed tomography scan.

Abstract Gas hydrates were recovered from eight sites on the Louisiana slope of the Gulf of Mexico. The gas hydrate discoveries ranged in water depths from 530 to 2400 m occurring as small to medium sized (0.5-50 mm) nodules, interspersed layers (1-10 mm thick) or as solid masses (> 150 mm thick). The hydrates have gas:fluid ratios as high as 170:1 at STP, C1/(C2 + C3) ratios ranging from 1.9 to > 1000 and d13C ratios from -43 to -71 per mil. Thermogenic gas hydrates are associated with oil-stained cores containing up to 7% extractable oil exhibiting moderate to severe biodegradation. Biogenic gas hydrates are also associated with elevated bitumen levels (10-700 ppm). All gas hydrate associated cores contain high percentages (up to 65%) of authigenic, isotopically light carbonate. The hydrate-containing cores are associated with seismic "wipeout" zones indicative of gassy sediments. Collapsed structures, diapiric crests, or deep faults on the flanks of diapirs appear to be the sites of the shallow hydrates.
