    Abstract The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a matter of international concern as the disease is spreading exponentially. Statistics showed that infected patients in China who received combined treatment of Traditional Chinese Medicine and modern medicine exhibited lower fatality rate and relatively better clinical outcomes. Both Lian-Hua-Qing-Wen Capsule (LHQWC) and Jin-Hua-Qing-Gan Granule (JHQGG) have been recommended by China Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of COVID-19 and have played a vital role in the prevention of a variety of viral infections. Here, we desired to analyze the broad-spectrum anti-viral capacities of LHQWC and JHQGG, and to compare their pharmacological functions for rational clinical applications. Based on literature mining, we found that both LHQWC and JHQGG were endowed with multiple antiviral activities by both targeting viral life cycle and regulating host immune responses and inflammation. In addition, from literature analyzed, JHQGG is more potent in modulating viral life cycle, whereas LHQWC exhibits better efficacies in regulating host anti-viral responses. When translating into clinical applications, oral administration of LHQWC could be more beneficial for patients with insufficient immune functions or for patients with alleviated symptoms after treatment with JHQGG.

    Abstract Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic poses a great threat to public health. Individuals who are immunocompromised because of the progression of the primary disease or receiving immunosuppressive medications are prone to severe COVID-19 complications and poor outcomes. Abundant data have shown that many COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective in large-scale populations; however, these clinical trials have excluded immunocompromised populations. Available evidence indicates that immunocompromised populations have a blunted immune response to other vaccines, raising concerns regarding the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccination in these populations. Thus, there is an urgent need to delineate the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines in these vulnerable populations. Here, we review the characteristics of specific humoral and cellular responses to COVID-19 vaccination in immunocompromised populations, including HIV-infected patients and those receiving immunosuppressive treatment, especially solid organ transplant recipients and those undergoing anti-CD20 treatment. We also addressed the challenges that immunocompromised populations will face in the future pandemic and the need for basic and clinical translational studies to highlight the best vaccination strategies for these populations.

    Abstract The prostate is a vital accessory gonad in the mammalian male reproductive system. With the ever-increasing proportion of the population over 60 years of age worldwide, the incidence of prostate diseases, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa), is on the rise and is gradually becoming a significant medical problem globally. The notch signaling pathway is essential in regulating prostate early development. However, the potential regulatory mechanism of Notch signaling in prostatic enlargement and hyperplasia remains unclear. In this study, we proved that overactivation of Notch1 signaling in mouse prostatic epithelial cells (OEx) led to prostatic enlargement via enhancing proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis of prostatic epithelial cells. Further study showed that N1ICD/RBPJ directly up-regulated the androgen receptor (AR) and enhanced prostatic sensitivity to androgens. Hyper-proliferation was not found in orchidectomized OEx mice without androgen supply but was observed after Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) supplementation. Our data showed that the number of mitochondrion in prostatic epithelial cells of OEx mice was increased, but the mitochondrial function was impaired, and the essential activity of the mitochondrial respiratory electron transport chain was significantly weakened. Disordered mitochondrial number and metabolic function further resulted in excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Importantly, anti-oxidant N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) therapy could alleviate prostatic hyperplasia caused by the over-activation of Notch1 signaling.     Abstract Background: The development of atherosclerosis was considered as the common cause of the stenosis of coronary artery grafts. Left internal mammary artery (LIMA) was the best artery graft for further effectiveness of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). We sought to assess the impact of known conventional cardiovascular risk factors (RFs) on LIMA graft stenosis.
    Methods: A retrospective study including 618 participants, who had recurrence of chest pain after CABG, aged ≥18 years, hospitalized for coronary angiography in Beijing Anzhen hospital between 2010 and 2017 was performed. All the participants were confirmed to have LIMA graft. Multivariate analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between conventional RFs and LIMA graft stenosis.
    Results: Of the study, 220 (35.6%) participants continued to smoke, 504 (81.6%) were overweight or obese, and 411 (66.5%) and 242 (39.2%) reported concomitant hypertension and diabetes, respectively. LIMA graft stenosis occurred in 161 participants (26.1%). Postoperative smoking, a CABG duration of ≥10 years and hyperglycemia without diabetes had an increased risk of LIMA graft stenosis, the odds ratio (OR) was 1.86 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.26-2.78], 2.24 (95%CI:1.33-3.478), and 2.44(95% CI:1.39-4.32), respectively. Statin use (OR, 0.28; 95% CI: 0.25-0.5) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) < 1.8 mmol/L (OR, 0.27; 95% CI: 0.14-0.53) had a significantly decreased risk of LIMA graft stenosis. While, only 15.4% (95/618) achieved the target LDL-C level.
    Conclusions: Postoperative smoking and hyperglycemia without diabetes had an increased risk of LIMA graft stenosis. Statin use and LDL-C <1.8 mmol/L decreased the risk.
