    Abstract Autonomic responses elicited by myocardial infarction vary depending on the site of injury, but accurate assessment using heart rate variability during the acute phase is limited. We systematically searched PubMed without language restrictions throughout July 2023. We reviewed studies reporting autonomic indices separately for anterior and inferior infarcts, followed by a meta-analysis of those reporting the standard deviation of the inter-beat interval between normal sinus beats during the initial 24 hours after the onset of symptoms. Six studies were included, comprising 341 patients (165 anterior, 176 inferior infarcts), all with satisfactory scores on the Newcastle-Ottawa quality scale. The estimated average of the standardized mean difference (based on the random-effects model) was -0.722 (95% confidence intervals: -0.943 to -0.501), which differed from zero (z=-6.416, p<0.0001). This finding indicates sympathetic and vagal dominance during acute anterior and inferior infarcts, respectively, with excessive responses likely contributing to early arrhythmogenesis. Despite the amelioration of autonomic dysfunction by revascularization, infarct location should be considered when commencing β-adrenergic receptor blockade, especially after delayed procedures.

    Abstract We put forward a conceptualization of Mixed Reality as a blend of digital objects with real ones that coexist and interact with each other and they are also spatially referenced so that they are properly perceived in space by an observer that could potentially be at any position any time. In accordance with this statement, we have adopted the concept of a Mixed Object which is composed of a set of physical properties linked with a set of digital ones. In our case, the physical properties are acquired by employing geospatial technologies such as photogrammetry, laser scanning, unmanned aerial vehicles and positioning systems and are further processed in order to be visually displayed by utilizing Geographical Information Systems and Geovisualization frameworks in combination with traditional image processing techniques. We show that the Mixed Object approach is in conformance with Microsoft’s approach on Mixed Reality as the common space between humans, computers, and the environment and we further incorporate in these the Geospatial Linking Modalities. We finally provide an affordable MR experience as a proof of concept, by utilizing a smartphone for capturing and visualizing the environment, a visual tag for positioning purposes and freely available photogrammetrically mapped content and virtual objects to form a digital scene blended with the real environment.

    Abstract The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a tributyrin and monolaurin blend compared to high ZnO levels in weaned piglets under field conditions. In Trial 1, piglets (n = 168) were assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: 1) control (CON; diet supplemented with 3000 g ZnO/t of feed; n = 8 replicates); 2) tributyrin and monolaurin blend – Porcestin™ (PR; diet supplemented with basal level of ZnO at 150 g/t and with the tested blend at 5 kg/t of feed; n = 8 replicates). In Trial 2, piglets (n = 244) were assigned to the same two treatments (n = 10 replicates). The study duration was 4 (Trial 1) and 6 (Trial 2) weeks post-weaning. In both trials, growth performance was similar between treatments (P > 0.05). In Trial 1, faecal counts of Lactobacillus spp. increased in pigs of PR group (P < 0.05). In both trials, histomorphometrical analysis of jejunum and ileum samples showed a thicker intestinal mucosa in favor of the PR treatment (P < 0.01), and Foxp3-positive regulatory T cells increased together with a concomitant decrease of MPO-positive granulocytes in jejunal mucosa of piglets from the PR treatment (P < 0.01). Overall, supplementation of monolaurin and tributyrin blend compared to high ZnO levels resulted in similar growth performance. Moreover, beneficial effects on small intestinal morphometry and immune cells responses indicate its ability to attenuate inflammatory processes. Further research is necessary to optimize the use of tested product.

    Abstract Since smart devices are becoming the primary technological means for daily human activities related to user-location, location-based services constitute a crucial component of the related smart applications. Meanwhile, traditional geospatial tools such as geographic information systems (GIS) in conjunction with photogrammetric techniques and 3D visualization frameworks can achieve immersive virtual reality over custom virtual geospatial worlds. In such environments, 3D scenes with virtual beings and monuments with the assistance of storytelling techniques may reconstruct historical sites and “revive” historical events. Boosting of Internet and wireless network speeds and mixed reality (MR) capabilities generate great opportunities for the development of location-based smart applications with cultural heritage content. This paper presents the MR authoring tool of “Mergin’ Mode” project, aimed at monument demonstration through the merging of the real with the virtual, assisted by geoinformatics technologies. The project does not aim at simply producing an MR solution, but more importantly, an open source platform that relies on location-based data and services, exploiting geospatial functionalities. In the long term, it aspires to contribute to the development of open cultural data repositories and the incorporation of cultural data in location-based services and smart guides, to enable the web of open cultural data, thereby adding extra value to the existing cultural-tourism ecosystem.

    Abstract Water resources are increasingly coming under pressure specially around the Mediterranean area, leading to water scarcity and a deterioration in water quality. The use of treated wastewater represents an alternative source to enhance the demand for irrigation water. Water reuse in combination with the promotion of the use of water-efficient technologies in industry and water-saving irrigation techniques could lead to good qualitative and quantitative water status for surface and ground water bodies. Nevertheless, food-borne outbreaks linked to fresh produce irrigated with partially or untreated wastewater caused by bacteria, parasites and enteropathogenic viruses have been widely reported. In the absence of solid scientific understanding of the actual risks involved, consumers are likely less receptive to buy leafy greens irrigated with treated wastewater, also known as reclaimed water. In this study, we aimed to assess the microbiological risks of leafy green vegetables irrigated with treated wastewater in Spain using Norovirus as a model organism to facilitate the development of risk management strategies. A conceptual exposure model was designed to describe the virus fate and transport from the Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) secondary effluent to the consumers' fork. This study is an example of the use of reclaimed water for irrigation of commercial fields producing leafy greens in the south-east of Spain and tries to assess potential microbiological risks to the consumers by establishing their safety.

    Abstract This paper deals with the interconnection of a small wind turbine with the low voltage distribution grid and the implementation of an improved control scheme, which also serves educational purposes. Initially the subsystems—wind turbine, rectifying bridge, interleaved boost converter, three-phase inverter, interconnection inductors, lifting transformer, filtering capacitors—are investigated, in order to explain their selection, based on the LEMEC (Laboratory of Electromechanical Energy Conversion, Department of Electrical Engineering, UoP) educational policy. Afterwards, the three-phase inverter control scheme, which is responsible for controlling its input voltage (voltage of the DC Bus) and consequently the active power, as well as the reactive power injected into the grid (VQ control) is analyzed. This is accomplished through DQ transformation and PI controllers which are responsible for generating the appropriate reference signals, to generate the required Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) pulses to drive the semiconductor switches of the inverter. In addition, it is explained how this particular control method can compensate reactive power in the grid, even in apnea, by automatically charging the DC Bus. Finally, simulation and experimental results are given to prove the proposed control method effectiveness.
