Abstract Corals and lichens are iconic examples of photosynthetic holobionts, i.e., ecological and evolutionary units resulting from the tightly integrated association of algae and prokaryotic microbiota with animal or fungal hosts, respectively. While the role of the coral host in modulating photosynthesis has been clarified to a large extent in coral holobionts, the role of the fungal host in this regard is far less understood. Here, we address this question by taking advantage of the recent discovery of highly specific fungal-algal pairings corresponding to climatically adapted ecotypes of the lichen-forming genus

Abstract Articular cartilage defects represent an unsolved clinical challenge. Photopolymerizable hydrogels are attractive candidates supporting repair. This study investigates the short-term safety and efficacy of two novel hyaluronic acid (HA)-triethylene glycol (TEG)-coumarin hydrogels photocrosslinked in situ in a clinically relevant large animal model. It is hypothesized that HA-hydrogel-augmented microfracture (MFX) is superior to MFX in enhancing early cartilage repair, and that the molar degree of substitution and concentration of HA affects repair. Chondral full-thickness defects in the knees of adult minipigs are treated with either 1) debridement (No MFX), 2) debridement and MFX, 3) debridement, MFX, and HA hydrogel (30% molar derivatization, 30 mg mL

Abstract The growing interest in soft robots comes from the new possibilities offered by these systems to cope with problems that cannot be addressed by robots built from rigid bodies. Many innovative solutions have been developed in recent years to design soft components and systems. They all demonstrate how soft robotics development is closely dependent on advanced manufacturing processes. This review aims at giving an insight on the current state of the art in soft robotics manufacturing. It first puts in light the elementary components that can be used to develop soft actuators, whether they use fluids, shape memory alloys, electro-active polymers or stimuli-responsive materials. Other types of elementary components, such as soft smart structures or soft-rigid hybrid systems, are then presented. The second part of this review deals with the manufacturing methods used to build complete soft structures. It includes molding, with possibly reinforcements and inclusions, additive manufacturing, thin-film manufacturing, shape deposition manufacturing, and bonding. The paper conclusions sums up the pros and cons of the presented techniques, and open to developing topics such as design methods for soft robotics and sensing technologies.

Abstract Histopathologic diagnosis of thyroid neoplasia in teleosts is complicated, because thyroid tissue is unencapsulated, and normal tissue can have wide ectopic extensions. Assessment of thyroid hormone concentrations in conjunction with histologic evaluation of thyroid carcinoma has not been reported in teleosts, even though routinely performed in other species. A yellowbar angelfish (Pomacanthus maculosus) presented with a mass that extended beyond the gill arches. Partial surgical resection was performed, and a histologic diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma was made. Plasma from the affected fish and two control Pomacanthus were used to assess thyroid hormone concentrations using a domestic mammalian assay. Thyroid-stimulating hormone and throxine were undetectable in two of three fish. Triiodothyronine was lower in the affected fish than in controls. The tumor did not appear to be actively secreting hormone. This is the first characterization of thyroid tumors and corresponding thyroid hormones in teleosts, which may assist in diagnosis of this disease.
