Abstract Background: The present study was conducted to establish the patterns and risk factors of surgical site infections in our institution between 2006 and 2011.
Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. The surgical site infection (SSI) was identified based on the presence of ICD-10-CM diagnostic code in hospital discharge records. By using a standardized data collection form predictor variables including patient characteristics, preoperative, intra-operative and postoperative data were obtained.
Results: Ninety five patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The patients were admitted for various procedures including both elective (62.1%) and emergency (37.9%) operations. Colectomy (13.7%) was the leading procedure followed by umbilical herniation (12.6) and appendix perforation (12.6%). The mean age was 47.13 years with standard deviation of 19.60 years. Twenty percent were addicted to opium. Midline incision above and below the umbilicus (40%) had the highest prevalence of infection. Most patients (46.3%) had cleancontaminated wounds and 30.5% had contaminated one. The quantitative variables which were also measured include duration of surgery, pre-operative and post-operative hospital stay with the mean of 2.9±1.45 hours, 1.02±1.42 and 7.75±6.75 days respectively. The most antibiotics prescribed post-operatively were the combination of ceftriaxone and metronidazole (51.6%).
Conclusion: The contaminated and clean-contaminated wounds are associated with higher rate of SSIs. Also, there was a converse relation between length of surgical incision and rate of SSIs. In overall, we found type of surgery as the main risk factor in developing the SSIs.

Abstract During silicon crystal growth, oxygen, a well-known major impurity, affects the final silicon wafer's mechanical and electrical properties. This study focused on regulation of discharge of different concentrations of oxygen from the quartz crucible into the silicon melt while considering the crucible angular speed and the friction at the melt-crucible interface. The three-dimensional transient governing equations for heat transfer, fluid flow, and impurity transportation in the Czochralski (CZ) puller were solved numerically. The oxygen solvation equation representing the crucible to silicon melt was modified to evaluate the accuracy of oxygen concentration calculations during the CZ process. Experimental measurements using the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) technique were used to confirm the simulation results. The results demonstrate that the crucible angular speed affects the oxygen concentration near the crucible wall and therefore in the silicon ingot. The proposed modifications for evaluating oxygen concentration offer a more comprehensive understanding of the oxygen dynamics during the CZ crystal growth.

Abstract Power systems face challenges with regard to handling the high penetration of renewable energies, including energy intermittency and fluctuations, which are not present in conventional electricity systems. Various flexibility models have been developed to address these fluctuations, including demand-side flexibility, which offers a practical solution with which to overcome these challenges in all demand sectors, including the commercial sector. This paper proposes a new structure for the participation of the commercial sector in the electricity market to integrate and coordinate the consumption of the commercial sector. Unlike previous studies that had commercial consumers participate in the electricity market individually and sometimes fail to meet the requirements for flexibility programs, this study adopts a commercial aggregator to enhance the responsiveness of commercial systems. The proposed structure includes a mathematical model for commercial systems, e.g., shopping centers, with responsive ventilation systems to achieve demand flexibility. The study also uses the information-gap decision theory to address time-based commercial demand response planning from 24 h ahead to near real time. Moreover, a multi-layered structure is proposed to integrate the flexibility of shopping centers from the demand side to the supply side through a newly invented commercial demand response aggregator. The proposed approach was implemented in the New York electricity market, and the results show that it provides demand flexibility for up to 18% of the nominal level of electricity consumption compared to the traditional system. The paper aims to present a responsive structure for commercial systems, addressing the challenges of integrating renewable energies with the electricity system.

Abstract In this paper, we have developed an in-vehicle wireless driver breath alcohol detection (IDBAD) system based on Sn-doped CuO nanostructures. When the proposed system detects the ethanol trace in the driver`s exhaled breath, it can alarm and then prevents the car to be started and also sends the location of the car to the mobile phone. The sensor used in this system is a two-sided micro-heater integrated resistive ethanol gas sensor fabricated based on Sn-doped CuO nanostructures. Pristine and Sn-doped CuO nanostructures were synthesized as the sensing materials. The micro-heater is calibrated to provide the desired temperature by applying voltage. The results showed that by Sn-doping in CuO nanostructures, the sensor performance can be significantly improved. The proposed gas sensor has a fast response, good repeatability along with good selectivity that makes it suitable for being used in practical applications such as the proposed system.

Abstract The coniferous shrub species Juniperus sabina (savin) is widespread in mountainous regions of Eurasia. The species produces large amounts of fire-prone plant mass in its habitats. The aim of this study was to assess the effect that burning of savin shrubs has on the soil seed bank (SSB), the microbial respiration and the amount of organic matter under its canopy. In each of three sampling areas, four individuals of savin were randomly selected. Under each of these individuals and on adjacent herbaceous control patches, soil samples were taken from 0 to 5 cm and 5–10 cm depths for SSB, biological and chemical analyses. The sampling was repeated after burning the canopy. We found that the immediate effects of burning on the SSB and on the biological and chemical soil parameters were significantly negative. In particular, SSB density, magnitude of microbial respiration and amount of organic matter were significantly decreased after savin canopy burning in 0–5 cm depth, while these changes were less pronounced on the burned herbaceous patches. Hence the restoration of gaps created by burning savin cannot rely on the SSB. Furthermore, alkalization of the soil and decreased soil quality caused by savin burning might hamper the vegetation recovery even in the medium to long run.

Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of needle-stick injury among Iranian nurses.
Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of needle-stick injury among Iranian nurses. A comprehensive search of Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Scientific Information Database, and MagIran was performed, yielding 29 observational articles comprising 8842 nurses. The studies ranged from 2006 to 2023, with sample sizes varying from 68 to 1555 individuals. Methodological quality was assessed using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist. The pooled prevalence was calculated using the random-effects model, and subgroup analyses were conducted based on hospital type and gender. The data was analyzed using Stata software version 16.
Results: The pooled prevalence of needle-stick injury among Iranian nurses was found to be 46% (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 39-53%). Subgroup analysis revealed significant difference in prevalence between teaching hospitals (47%; 95% CI: 39-54%) and military hospitals (38%; 95% CI: 31.1-44%). The prevalence of NSI in region 1 (Tehran and surrounding provinces) and other regions was 45.1% (95% CI: 37-54%) and 49.17% (95% CI: 36.5-61.7%). Gender-based analysis showed higher prevalence in women (58%; 95% CI: 44-71%) compared to men (55%; 95% CI: 43-66%).
Conclusion: Needle stick injuries has a high prevalence among Iranian nurses, especially nurses working in teaching hospitals. Therefore, it seems necessary to use interventions to reduce it.
