Abstract A nine-year old female patient presented with a history of trauma to the upper central incisors. She received treatment for apicoforming with calcium hydroxide for a prolonged period, who after root canal obturation presented acute inflammation of the upper lip and buccal vestibule. Treatment included antimicrobial therapy, extensive surgical debridement under general anesthesia, apicoectomy of both incisors, and direct visual obturation of the canals and apical sealing of the teeth with gutta-percha. The anatomopathologic diagnosis was acute chronic osteomyelitis of the maxilla. One and a half years later, clinical absence of inflammatory signs and adequate healing of the bone tissue were observed. It was concluded that, although reports concerning chronic osteomyelitis of the maxillary bone are rare events, this type of infection should be always present at the time of the differential diagnosis for evaluating pediatric patients with a history of dentoalveolar trauma and inflammatory processes in the maxillofacial region.

Abstract Introduction: Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) remains one of the most frequent complications associated to hemodialysis (HD), frequently triggered by a reduction in absolute blood volume (ABV) not compensated by vascular refilling. A recently developed dilutional method allows routinary measurement of ABV and, by a simple algorithm, may turn blood volume monitor (BVM) guided UF (ultrafiltration) biofeedback into an ABV control, automatically adjusting UF rate to maintain ABV above a preset threshold. The aim of this study is to identify an individual critical ABV threshold and test the ability of an ABV feedback control to avoid IDH.
Methods: We studied 24 patients throughout three consecutive midweek HD treatments. ABV and blood pressure (BP) were measured every 30 min and anytime the patient referred any symptoms to identify each patient's critical ABV (ABV at the time of hypotension). A fixed bolus dilution approach at the start of HD was used to calculate ABV. Then, patients were followed through three additional HD treatments and IDH development was analyzed.
Findings: Seventy-one treatments performed in 24 patients. ABV monitoring showed a constant decrease as HD treatment progressed. Thirteen IDH events were observed in eight different patients, with a mean systolic BP drop in IDH treatments of 37.38 ± 4.31 mmHg and a mean adjusted ABV at hypotension of 71.07 ± 14.88 mL/kg. Critical ABV was individually set in patients prone to IDH. As expected, ABV feedback control successfully maintained ABV over preset critical ABV. IDH events were avoided in 21 out of 22 treatments performed. ABV drop was successfully reduced, as well as SBP drop (despite similar UF than prior to ABV feedback control implementation).
Discussion: ABV feedback control avoided IDH in 21 out of 22 treatments performed by maintaining blood volume above critical ABV, significantly reducing ABV variations without compromising prescribed UF.

Abstract The symbiosis between rhizobia and legumes is of pivotal importance in nitrogen-poor ecosystems. Furthermore, as it is a specific process (most legumes only establish a symbiosis with certain rhizobia), it is of great interest to know which rhizobia are able to nodulate key legumes in a specific habitat. This study describes the diversity of the rhizobia that are able to nodulate the shrub legume

Abstract Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can be used as carriers for biomolecules or drugs in cell culture and animal models. Particularly, AuNPs ease their internalization into the cell and prevent their degradation. In addition, engineered AuNPs can be employed as sensors of a variety of biomarkers, where the electronic and optical properties of the AuNPs are exploited for a convenient, easy, and fast read out. However, in all these applications, a key step requires the conjugation of the different molecules to the nanoparticles. The most common approach exploits the great affinity of sulfur for gold. Herein, we summarize the methods used by our group for the conjugation of different molecules with AuNPs. The procedure is easy and takes around 2 days, where the reagents are slowly added, following an incubation at room temperature to ensure the complete conjugation. Finally, the unbound material is removed by centrifugation.

Title translation Intracardiac fungal mass in extreme premature patient.
Abstract There are few reports on intracardiac fungal masses, especially in the pediatric population. We present the case of an extremely premature patient who, after being hospitalized since birth in an intensive care unit, developed fungal masses in the right atrium, which, due to their size, location and resistance to medical treatment, required surgical excision. For this reason, at the slightest suspicion of systemic candidiasis in pediatric patients, it is mandatory to include an echocardiogram in the defocalization examinations to rule out endocarditis and thus avoid the development of intracardiac fungal masses. Therefore, early detection for timely medical management may avoid the surgical approach associated with a high risk of morbidity and mortality in extremely premature patients.
