Abstract The article describes the following aspects regarding the pandemic of Covid-19 in Brazil: 1. the positive statistical correlation between votes for Bolsonaro in the 2018’s presidential elections and deaths caused by Covid-19, at the descriptive level of federal units; 2. the uncorrelated relation between votes for Bolsonaro and the popular adhesion to the vaccination campaign after June 2021; 3. the drop in death rates after June 2021 and the persistence of the correlation between proportional deaths and votes after it. In light of this empirical analysis, we suggest some paths for future historical and sociological research on the causal mechanisms for this apparent association.

Abstract Purpose: To report two new cases with confirmed diagnosis of Heimler syndrome and describe their systemic and ophthalmic phenotype and visual rehabilitation.
Methods: Retrospective review of medical records.
Results: Both siblings were diagnosed as having sensori-neural hearing loss and retinal dystrophy with exuberant intraretinal cystoid spaces and cone-rod dysfunction. The older sibling also had amelogenesis imperfecta and neither had nail abnormalities. Genetic analysis identified homozygosity for the pathogenic variant c.2528G>A p.(Gly843Asp) in the

Abstract Counterfeiting of alcoholic beverages, particularly high-value spirits such as whiskey, presents significant challenges for regulators, manufacturers, and consumers. In this study, we introduce and validate a novel application of headspace extraction (HS) followed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) for the quantitative determination of ethanol content in 42 suspected counterfeit brazilian samples of whiskeys. This method, in conjunction with visual inspection of material inconsistencies, offers a combined approach to identify potential cases of fraud. The HS-GC-FID findings revealed that only 19% of the analyzed samples had ethanol content in the limits declared on the label, emphasizing the role of ethanol content as a chemical marker for suspected beverage fraud.

Abstract The availability of public services through online platforms has improved the coverage and efficiency of essential services provided to citizens worldwide. These services also promote transparency and foster citizen participation in government processes. However, the increased online presence also exposes sensitive data exchanged between citizens and service providers to a wider range of security threats. Therefore, ensuring the security and trustworthiness of online services is crucial to Electronic Government (EGOV) initiatives' success. Hence, this work assesses the security posture of online platforms hosted in 3068 governmental domain names, across all UN Member States, in three dimensions: support for secure communication protocols; the trustworthiness of their digital certificate chains; and services' exposure to known vulnerabilities. The results indicate that despite its rapid development, the public sector still falls short in adopting international standards and best security practices in services and infrastructure management. This reality poses significant risks to citizens and services across all regions and income levels.

Abstract Polybrominated diphenyl ethers are persistent disrupters assimilated by organisms, yet little is known about their link to plastic ingestion and health effects. In an experiment, two groups of yellow-legged/lesser black-backed gulls (Larus michahellis/Larus fuscus) were fed plastics with BDE99 to assess leaching into brain, preen oil, liver and fat tissues and evaluate effects on health and stress parameters. Although most plastic was regurgitated, we observed a clear relation between plastic ingestion and chemical leaching. BDE99 exhibited higher levels in brain tissue of gulls from the plastic groups. Also, only values of cholinesterases measured in plasma were significantly reduced in the 'plastic' groups. Cholinesterase activity in the brain also tended to decrease, suggesting a negative effect in gulls' neurofunction. Results indicate that chemical leaching occurs, even when plastics stay in the stomach for a short period of time and showed that this can affect gulls' health.

Abstract The energy sector plays an important role in socioeconomic and environmental development. Accurately forecasting energy demand across various time horizons can yield substantial advantages, such as better planning and management of energy resources. Different methodologies, including mathematical, statistical, and machine learning models, have been proposed for energy consumption prediction. Nevertheless, some studies claim that deep learning models can outperform other approaches when dealing with time series data characterized by a high level of granularity. There are different implementations of deep learning models, such as recurrent unit layers, dimensional convolutions, or Transformers. Hence, it is interesting to compare the performance of different architectural types using a methodology that utilizes feature selection and model interpretation to underscore the significance of meteorological features and timestamps in the forecasting task. This study presents a comparative methodology of forecasting approaches employing recurrence-based models: Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), and Time Series Transformer (TST), while exploring the relationship between model performance and resource allocation releated with ammount of features and time resolution. The findings reveal that the Transformer architecture works better with fewer samples, despite the occurrence of overfitting. In addition, training the models enabled the creation of a voting ensemble, optimized by the Simulated Annealing metaheuristic, resulting in a 23% improvement in hourly granularity.
