    Abstract Heart dysfunction is one of the most life-threatening organ dysfunctions caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Myocardial or cardiovascular damage is the most common extrapulmonary organ complication in critically ill patients. Understanding the pathogenesis and pathological characteristics of myocardial and vascular injury is important for improving clinical diagnosis and treatment approach. Herein, the mechanism of direct damage caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 to the heart and secondary damage caused by virus-driven inflammation was reviewed. The pathological mechanism of ischemia and hypoxia due to microthrombosis and inflammatory injury as well as the injury mechanism of tissue inflammation and single myocardial cell necrosis triggered by the viral infection of pericytes or macrophages, hypoxia, and energy metabolism disorders were described. The latter can provide a novel diagnosis, treatment, and investigation strategy for heart dysfunctions caused by COVID-19 or the Omicron variant.

    Abstract Mitral annular disjunction is a cardiac structural abnormality characterized by the distinct separation between the top of the left ventricular myocardium and the mitral annulus supporting the posterior mitral leaflet occurring during systole. It has recently gained wide attention due to the increasing recognition of the link between mitral annular disjunction and arrhythmogenic mitral valve prolapse, particularly, with the increased risks of ventricular arrhythmias resulting in sudden cardiac death. This review has summarized the recent progress in the diagnostic modalities, clinical implications of mitral annular disjunction, and its specific surgical considerations.

    Abstract Gene-based transcriptome analysis, such as differential expression analysis, can identify the key factors causing disease production, cell differentiation and other biological processes. However, this is not enough because basic life activities are mainly driven by the interactions between genes. Although there have been already many differential network inference methods for identifying the differential gene interactions, currently, most studies still only use the information of nodes in the network for downstream analyses. To investigate the insight into differential gene interactions, we should perform interaction-based transcriptome analysis (IBTA) instead of gene-based analysis after obtaining the differential networks. In this paper, we illustrated a workflow of IBTA by developing a Co-hub Differential Network inference (CDN) algorithm, and a novel interaction-based metric, pivot APC2. We confirmed the superior performance of CDN through simulation experiments compared with other popular differential network inference algorithms. Furthermore, three case studies are given using colorectal cancer, COVID-19 and triple-negative breast cancer datasets to demonstrate the ability of our interaction-based analytical process to uncover causative mechanisms.

    Abstract Background: It is essential to evaluate the quality of life in patients with hematologic malignancies to reflect the therapeutic effect and prognosis, but lengthy assessments are often burdensome. The 7-Item Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G7) is a brief, easy, and rapid index for evaluating quality of life. Nevertheless, there is no report about its application in Chinese patients with hematologic malignancies.
    Objective: The purpose of this study was to validate the Chinese version of the FACT-G7 for patients with hematologic malignancies.
    Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study. A total of 855 patients with hematologic malignancies completed the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) and were scored the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG-PS) by nurses. Cronbach's alpha, confirmatory factor analyses, Pearson's correlation, and one-way analysis of variance were conducted to evaluate internal consistent reliability, structural validity and concurrent validity.
    Results: The FACT-G7 showed acceptable internal consistency, as indicated by a Cronbach's alpha of 0.73. The confirmatory factor analyses test for single-factor model fit for the FACT-G7 scale was almost adequate. The satisfactory correlations between the FACT-G7 and the FACT-G and its subscales, and ECOG-PS groups differed in FACT-G7 scores demonstrating concurrent validity.
    Conclusion: This study suggested that the Chinese version of the FACT-G7 provides a useful and rapid measure for assessing quality of life in Chinese patients with hematologic malignancies, which providing a reference for further evaluation and care.

    Abstract Objectives: About one in four mothers will experience depression and anxiety during pregnancy and within their first year following childbirth. The meta-analysis aggregated the findings of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the immediate post-intervention and maintenance effects of MBI on perinatal depression and anxiety.
    Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science for English-language journal articles from the first available date until Oct 27th, 2022.
    Results: Twenty-five published RCTs were identified and reviewed, with a total of 2495 perinatal women. MBI was superior to controls for clinical and subthreshold perinatal depression and anxiety. The benefit for depression reduction was stable over time and sustained to the postpartum period, but the maintenance effect on perinatal anxiety was less conclusive. Moreover, MBI's post-intervention effects on depression and anxiety were moderated by perinatal women's symptom severity. The post intervention effects were significantly greater among women in Low- and Middle-Income countries, where perinatal mental health care is less available and accessible. Greater improvement in mindfulness was also associated with a significantly larger post-intervention effect on perinatal depression.
    Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggests that MBIs may complement and extend the available range of effective interventions for clinical and subthreshold perinatal depression and anxiety.

    Abstract Lay abstract: Timely detection is an issue of paramount importance in the care of children with autism spectrum disorder. Whether the delayed autism spectrum disorder diagnosis can be explained by children's clinical presentations and socio-familial status in China is a question to be addressed. We investigated 1235 autism spectrum disorder children from 132 rehabilitation organisations in Shenzhen, China. These children were found to have a mean age of diagnosis of 31.4 ± 12.7 months and a median age of diagnosis of 30.0 months. The majority of these children were able to receive their diagnosis during toddlerhood. However, about one in six were not diagnosed until they entered preschool or later, thus missing the golden window of opportunity for early intervention. The age of diagnosis was likely to be late if the children were older, were less severe and presented with no intellectual impairment. The odds of having a delayed autism spectrum disorder diagnosis were more than 9 times higher among migrant autism spectrum disorder children than among those with local household registrations, thus underscoring the importance of identifying culturally sensitive socio-economic determinants in autism spectrum disorder detection, as these factors are likely to affect the quality of life of many autism spectrum disorder children and their families.

    Abstract Rationale: Fibroadenoma is the most common benign tumor of the breast, but giant juvenile fibroadenoma exceeding 20 cm is much rare. This report presents the largest and heaviest giant juvenile fibroadenoma in an 18-year-old Chinese girl.
    Diagnosis and interventions: An 18-year-old adolescent girl with a 2-year history of a large left breast mass with progressive expansion over 11 months. A 28 × 21 cm soft swelling occupied the entire outer quadrants of the left breast. The huge mass sagged below the belly button, resulting in high asymmetry of the shoulders. Contralateral breast examination results were normal except for hypopigmentary detected on the nipple-areola complex. Under general anesthesia, the lump was completely excised along the outer envelope of the tumor, while reserving excessive resection of the skin. The patient's postoperative recovery was uneventful, and the surgical wound healed well.
    Outcomes: A radial incision operation was finally performed to remove the huge mass and to preserve the normal breast tissue and the nipple-areolar complex, not only considering the aesthetics but also preserving the ability to lactate.
    Lessons: Currently, there is a lack of clear guidelines regarding the diagnostic and treatment modalities for a giant juvenile fibroadenoma. The principle of surgical choice is to balance aesthetics and function preservation.

    Abstract Motivation: Differential network inference is a fundamental and challenging problem to reveal gene interactions and regulation relationships under different conditions. Many algorithms have been developed for this problem; however, they do not consider the differences between the importance of genes, which may not fit the real-world situation. Different genes have different mutation probabilities, and the vital genes associated with basic life activities have less fault tolerance to mutation. Equally treating all genes may bias the results of differential network inference. Thus, it is necessary to consider the importance of genes in the models of differential network inference.
    Results: Based on the Gaussian graphical model with adaptive gene importance regularization, we develop a novel Importance-Penalized Joint Graphical Lasso method (IPJGL) for differential network inference. The presented method is validated by the simulation experiments as well as the real datasets. Furthermore, to precisely evaluate the results of differential network inference, we propose a new metric named APC2 for the differential levels of gene pairs. We apply IPJGL to analyze the TCGA colorectal and breast cancer datasets and find some candidate cancer genes with significant survival analysis results, including SOST for colorectal cancer and RBBP8 for breast cancer. We also conduct further analysis based on the interactions in the Reactome database and confirm the utility of our method.
