    Abstract Background: Technology innovation provides an opportunity to support the rising number of people living with dementia globally. The present study examines experiences of people who have dementia and live in technology enriched supported care models. Additionally, it explores caregiver's attitudes towards technology use with the housing scheme.
    Methods: A qualitative research design was adopted, and eight housing schemes consented to take part in the study. A technology audit was undertaken in addition to participant interviews and caregiver survey. Seven peer researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 people living with dementia. Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Informal and formal caregivers were invited to complete a survey to capture their attitudes towards technology use. A total of 20 informal and 31 formal caregiver surveys were returned. All surveys were input into Survey Monkey and downloaded into excel for analysis. Closed questions were analysed using descriptive statistics and open-ended questions were organised into themes and described descriptively.
    Results: The technology audit identified that technologies were in place from as early as 2002. Technology heterogeneity of, both passive and active devices, was found within the housing schemes. Technologies such as wearable devices were reportedly used according to need, and mobile phone use was widely adopted. The themes that developed out of the tenant interviews were: Attitudes and Engagement with Technology; Technology Enhancing Tenants Sense of Security; Seeking Support and Digital Literacy; and Technology Enabled Connection. A lack of awareness about living alongside technology was a major finding. Technologies enabled a sense of reassurance and facilitated connections with the wider community. The interaction with technology presented challenges, for example, remembering passwords, access to Wi-Fi and the identification of its use in an emergency. The caregiver survey reported a range of facilitators and barriers for the use of technology within care. Both types of caregivers held relatively similar views around the benefits of technology, however their views on issues such as privacy and consent varied. Safety was considered more important than right to privacy by family caregivers.
    Conclusions: The present study provides new insight into stakeholder's experiences of living, working and caregiving alongside technology in supported living environments. As the generation of people living with dementia become more tech savvy, harnessing everyday technologies to support care could enable holistic care and support the transition through the care continuum. Advance care planning and technology assessments are at the very core of future technology provision. It is evident that a paternalistic attitudes towards technology use could impact the multitude of benefits technology can play in both health and leisure for people living with dementia and their caregivers.

    Abstract Introduction: Injury and subsequent thrombosis of the cerebral venous sinuses may be caused by closed head injuries secondary to a variety of different mechanisms. Skull fractures can lacerate or otherwise disrupt adjacent dural sinuses. The sequelae of such injuries may include thrombosis and either partial or total occlusion of the sinus, ultimately resulting in significant venous congestion. Sagittal sinus injury is associated with a more serious outcome due to the obligatory flow into the sinus, especially posterior to the coronal suture. In such cases, venous infarction may be a severe and life-threatening complication of head injury.
    Case presentation: A 2-year-old female presented with a depressed skull fracture near the midline and a thrombus in the sagittal sinus. Anticoagulation, the standard treatment cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, was contraindicated due to intracranial hemorrhage, so immediate thrombectomy was performed with successful neurologic recovery at 9-month follow up. To our knowledge, this case is the youngest patient documented to receive mechanical thrombectomy for superior sagittal sinus (SSS) thrombosis due to trauma.
    Conclusion: Closed head injuries in pediatric patients may be associated with CVST, with resulting venous drainage compromise and profound neurologic sequelae. Unlike adult patients with spontaneous cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) in which anticoagulation is the standard of care, pediatric patients experiencing traumatic CVST may have contraindications to anticoagulants. If the patient has a contraindication to anticoagulation such as intracranial bleeding, endovascular mechanical thrombectomy may be an effective intervention when performed by an experienced neurointerventionalist.

    Abstract In the search for novel quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) disinfectants that can evade bacterial resistance, we turned to natural products as a source of inspiration. Herein we used natural product ianthelliformisamine C as a scaffold to design a small library of QACs. We first synthesized ianthelliformisamine C via an amide coupling that allowed for facile purification without the need for protecting groups. We then alkylated and quaternized the internal amines to yield four novel QACs, but all but one demonstrated no antibacterial activity against the tested strains. Using a combination of membrane depolarization and permeabilization assays, we were able to demonstrate that ianthelliformisamine C and the active QAC analog enact cell death via membrane permeabilization, contrary to prior reports on ianthelliformisamine C's mechanism of action.

    Abstract DEAD-box protein 3X (DDX3X) is a human DEAD-box protein with conventional roles in RNA metabolism and unconventional functions in signalling pathways that do not require its enzymatic activity. For example, DDX3X acts as a multifunctional adaptor molecule in anti-viral innate immune signalling pathways, where it interacts with and regulates the kinase IKB-kinase-epsilon (IIKKε). Interestingly, both DDX3X and IKKɛ have also independently been shown to act as breast cancer oncogenes. IKKɛ's oncogenic functions are likely multifactorial, but it was suggested to phosphorylate the transcription factor Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) at Serine 167, which drives expression of Erα target genes in an estrogen-independent manner. In this study, we identified a novel physical interaction between DDX3X and ERα that positively regulates ERα activation. DDX3X knockdown in ER+ breast cancer cell lines resulted in reduced ERα phosphorylation, reduced Estrogen Response Element (ERE)-controlled reporter gene expression, decreased expression of ERα target genes, and decreased cell proliferation. Vice versa, overexpression of DDX3X resulted in enhanced ERα phosphorylation and activity. Furthermore, we provide evidence that DDX3X physically binds to ERα from co-immunoprecipitation and pulldown experiments. Based on our data, we propose that DDX3X acts as an adaptor to facilitate IKKε-mediated ERα activation, akin to the mechanism we previously elucidated for IKKε-mediated Interferon Regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) activation in innate immune signalling. In conclusion, our research provides a novel molecular mechanism that might contribute to the oncogenic effect of DDX3X in breast cancer, potentially linking it to the development of resistance against endocrine therapy.

    Abstract The Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia) is a small songbird in the New World Warbler family (Parulidae) that exhibits phenotypic and ecological differences across a widespread distribution and is important to California's riparian habitat conservation. Here, we present a high-quality de novo genome assembly of a vouchered female Yellow Warbler from southern California. Using HiFi long-read and Omni-C proximity sequencing technologies, we generated a 1.22 Gb assembly including 687 scaffolds with a contig N50 of 6.80 Mb, scaffold N50 of 21.18 Mb, and a BUSCO completeness score of 96.0%. This highly contiguous genome assembly provides an essential resource for understanding the history of gene flow, divergence, and local adaptation and can inform conservation management of this charismatic bird species.

    Abstract Objectives: We aim to assess the influence of COVID-19 on the social needs of emergency department (ED) patients, and assess patients' access to social services.
    Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 175 purposively sampled adult ED patients.
    Results: Approximately half of participants stated that COVID-19 negatively impacted their social needs with statistically significant differences observed for race, ethnicity, and insurance status. Many participants did not know of available social services, and a majority welcomed assistance from the ED.
    Conclusion: This study suggests that unmet social needs have risen because of COVID-19, and EDs may be positioned to identify and assist affected patients.

    Abstract Background: Middle meningeal artery (MMA) pseudoaneurysms are rare but can occur secondary to trauma with an associated skull fracture and can present with a variety of hemorrhage patterns. Epidural, subdural, subarachnoid, and intraparenchymal hematomas have all been reported. Given the wide range of clinical presentations and radiographic findings, multiple treatment strategies have been employed, including surgical removal, endovascular intervention, and conservative treatment. MMA pseudoaneurysms typically range from 2 to 5 mm in size and have been shown to have unpredictable growth patterns.
    Case description: A 54-year-old male identifying as a Jehovah's Witness presented after a fall and was found to have an epidural hematoma with an accompanying temporal bone fracture. Imaging demonstrated a traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the MMA. Given the patient's religious preferences, the emphasis was made during surgical planning for the minimization of blood loss. The epidural hematoma was evacuated, and the MMA pseudoaneurysm was directly visualized and surgically excised after ligation of its tributaries. The patient tolerated the procedure well without significant blood loss and made a complete neurological recovery.
    Conclusion: A well-circumscribed hypodensity on CT within a surrounding hyperintense collection should raise suspicion of MMA pseudoaneurysm in the setting of overlying temporal bone fracture as supported by previous imaging findings of large MMA pseudoaneurysms. The early detection of MMA pseudoaneurysm is imperative, as the presence may dictate more urgent intervention and changes in operative technique. Although not much is known about the nature and progression of these lesions, surgical excision has remained a safe, reliable method of treatment.
