Abstract Background: Systemic inflammatory regulators have been associated with preeclampsia (PE) during pregnancy; however, there is inconsistent evidence from animal models and observational results.
Methods: Using summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWASs), we performed a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis of two samples of systemic inflammatory regulators (
Results: The results indicate that there is a correlation between a higher circulating level of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-9 (IL-9) and an increased risk of PE (odds ratio [OR] = 1.32, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.09-1.60,
Conclusion: Our study suggests that SCGF-β, IL-5, IL-9, and TNF-α causally affect the PE risk, while PE is causally associated with MIF. Further studies are needed to validate these biomarkers in managing PE.

Abstract Using chitosan as pretreatment agent, the dyeing properties of peanut skin extracts (PSE) to flax fabrics were improved. Flax fabrics have excellent comfort property and are loved by many people. However, flax is different to dye, especially with natural dye. In this research, chitosan was used to pretreat flax fabrics and PSE was used to dye the pretreated flax fabric. The optimal conditions of the chitosan pretreatment and dyeing conditions of PSE were investigated according to the K/S value of the dyed flax fabrics. Comparing the original flax fabric, the chitosan pretreated flax fabric significantly improved the absorption to PSE, and the dyed fabrics had an increased K/S value from 0.9 to 3.9, and had good color fastnesses. The main chemical constitution in PSE such as catechin, chitosan, and cellulose of flax fabrics may form hydrogen bond and ionic bond. Chitosan pretreated and dyed flax fabrics had a stronger ability to UV resistance and scavenging free radicals. The fluorescence intensity of the dyed flax fabrics was improved while it was decreased after chitosan pretreatment. Chitosan pretreatment combined PSE dyeing can be used to develop functional flax textiles without using metallic mordants.

Abstract We propose a sensor with high anti-interference ability using a photonic crystal cavity coupled system for simultaneous sensing of the refractive index (RI) and temperature (T) based on an electromagnetically induced transparency-like effect. A transparent window is achieved in the transmission spectrum through destructive interference between the air mode resonance and dielectric mode resonance in two one-dimensional photonic crystal structures. The T-sensitive material (SU-8) is used in the coupled system, promoting sensitivity and anti-interference ability. The capability of the system to simultaneously detect a small range of RI and T is demonstrated using three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations and the fitting process. The RI sensitivities for the air and dielectric modes were 215 nm/refractive index unit (RIU) and 0 nm/RIU, respectively. The T sensitivities for the air and dielectric modes were 19 pm/K and -83

Abstract We put forward a dual-mode photonic crystal nanobeam cavity for simultaneous sensing of the refractive index (RI) and temperature (T) designed with the assistance of artificial neural networks (ANNs). We choose the structure of quadratically tapered elliptical holes with a slot to improve the sensitivities of the two modes. To reduce the time consumption of the design, the ANNs are trained to predict the band structure and to inverse design the geometric structure. For the forward prediction and the inverse design neural networks, low mean square errors of 5.1×10

Abstract The chronic articular disease osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by osteophyte generation, subchondral bone remodeling, and cartilage deterioration. Low levels of H2S catalyzed by cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) encoded by Cthhas neuroprotective, cardioprotective, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effects thus, Cth is being developed as a potential therapy for the management of the pathogenesis and symptoms of osteoarthritis. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and immunohistochemistry of human cartilage revealed that the expression of CTH was decreased in OA patients. We found that Cthoverexpression decrease IL-1β-induced overactivation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. In vivo, Cthoverexpression relieved pain response and cartilage damage in the anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) rat model. In vitro, CSE alleviated chondrocytes catabolism, inflammation, apoptosis, and senescence, and suppressed the NF-κB pathway. We postulate that CSE has therapeutic effects in suppressing inflammation and degeneration in OA and should be further investigated clinically.

Abstract Artificial neural networks are employed to predict the band structure of the one-dimensional photonic crystal nanobeam, and to inverse-design the geometry structure with on-demand band edges. The data sets generated by 3D finite-difference time-domain based on elliptical-shaped hole nanobeams are used to train the networks and evaluate the networks' accuracy. Based on the well-trained forward prediction and inverse-design network, an ultrabroad bandgap elliptical hole dielectric mode nanobeam cavity is designed. The bandgap achieves 77.7 THz for the center segment of the structure, and the whole designing process takes only 0.73 s. The approach can also be expanded to fast-design elliptical hole air mode nanobeam cavities. The present work is of significance for further research on the application of artificial neural networks in photonic crystal cavities and other optical devices design.

Abstract Objective: This systematic review/meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between rheumatoid arthritis and the incidence of diabetes mellitus.
Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted up to 10 March 2020 in Medline (via Ovid), Embase (via Ovid) and Web of Science core collection to identify cohort studies comparing the risk of diabetes mellitus incidence in people with rheumatoid arthritis with the general population. The I2 statistic was used to test heterogeneity. Pooled relative risks were calculated using random-effects models. Publication bias was assessed using Egger's test and Begg's test.
Results: The initial search provided 3669 articles. Of those, five journal articles/two conference abstracts comprising 1 629 854 participants were included in this study. The funnel plot showed potential publication bias, proven by Egger's test (-3.15, P < 0.01), but not Begg's test (-0.05, P = 1.00). Heterogeneity was observed in I2 test (I2 = 96%, P < 0.01). We found that rheumatoid arthritis was associated with a higher risk of diabetes mellitus incidence (pooled relative risk, 1.23; 95% confidence interval, 1.07-1.40). Exploration of potential sources of heterogeneity found significant heterogeneity in different countries/regions (P = 0.002), but heterogeneity was NS in different study designs (P = 0.30). Sensitivity analyses confirmed that the association between rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes mellitus incidence was robust.
Conclusion: Rheumatoid arthritis is associated with an increased risk of diabetes mellitus incidence. This finding supports the notion that inflammatory pathways are involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes. More intensive interventions targeting diabetes risk factors should be considered in people with rheumatoid arthritis.
