Abstract Unlike surgical instruments and endoscopic equipment, Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) devices are not readily available or accessible to the clinicians who may like to add this form of treatment modality for selected patients and on an ad hock basis. There is in fact a vacuum in finding the "tools" of PDT for those clinicians who are not part of a "Centre" with a built-in knowledge base and contacts for manufacturers. In this compendium the Yorkshire Laser Centre /YLC in the UK, (the Project of the Moghissi Laser Trust - (Charity number 326689) requested three experienced clinicians (RA, ZH, KM) to produce essential information on the use of and equipment for PDT in the clinic. The YLC also sponsored a researcher (ID) to search and compile a detailed but non-exhaustive list of approved photosensitizing agents, pharmaceutical companies, light sources and laser manufacturers with appropriate delivery devices for PDT. Thus, this Mini -Compendium is the end result of what is hoped to be a useful adjunct for practitioners, scientists and students of PDT.

Abstract Shoulder capsulitis is a painful condition in which movement of the shoulder becomes limited. Objective: The aim, based on study of a single case, was to evaluate subjective and objective short-term effects of radiation of the shoulder joint using LED red light (630nm, 37.5 Jcm over 500s) in a case of chronic shoulder capsulitis. The case was a 96-year-old man with painful and restricted movement of the right shoulder joint. A record was made of parameters before the start of treatment using the Oxford Shoulder Score [1] and repeated following 12 treatment sessions in a four-week period. Results indicate improvement in a number of parameters and almost pain free essential movement without use of NSAI gel. On the basis of findings, the method warrants a pilot study to test reproducibility and to establish optimal number of treatments. Treatment was to two areas.

Abstract Traditional treatment options for esophageal cancer have centered on the triad of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Although surgery remains the gold standard for operable disease, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is emerging as a valid minimally invasive option for select patients with inoperable disease. Years of experience with PDT for esophageal cancer seem to suggest that it may be particularly useful for treatment of early unresectable lesions, palliation of locally advanced disease, and salvage therapy for stent blockage or local tumor recurrence. Further investigation into the ideal role for PDT, perhaps through a comparative study with other nonsurgical options, may help clarify where it fits in the treatment armamentarium for esophageal cancer.

Abstract Of the many imaging technologies, some have the potential to be used in image-guided surgery and therapy (IGS/IGT). This review of relevant papers on IGS/IGT for lung cancer indicates effective localization and IGS/IGT in early endobronchial lesions by fluorescence bronchoscopic technique. Visualization of early peripheral (nodular) tumors at operation can be achieved by a variety of imaging methods and devices which allow identification, localization and provision of intraoperative real-time images. Recent developments employing fluorescence contrasts and near infra-red light have shown encouraging feasibility and outcome in providing reliable methods for the IGS of cancer generally and lung cancer more specifically with provision of real time intraoperative imaging. The concept of the hybrid operating theater is touched upon.
