    Abstract Wastewater discharge is considered to be a significant point source of microplastic (MPs) release into the marine environment. This study is the first attempt to quantify MPs released from the wastewater outfall from Bandar Abbas City into the Persian Gulf. Two wastewater discharge stations at Gursuzan and Suru were sampled. MPs were isolated by an oxidative procedure and subsequent density separation using ZnCl₂ solution. The average MP concentration in wastewater and sludge were 70.66 (±14.12, SD) MP.35 L⁻¹ and 6070 (±807.25) MPs.kg⁻¹, respectively at Confidence Level (CL) (95.0%). The most commonly recovered polymers were polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) in all size classes. Our findings provides a baseline of MP concentration in wastewater streams and slurry that is discharged from the Bandar Abbas wastewater treatment facility into the Persian Gulf. This highlights the need to undertake more studies at water treatment plants in the region for a realistic assessment of MP discharge into the Persian Gulf.

    Abstract The primary objective of this study was to juxtapose the union rate and incidence of complications in paediatric patients presenting early (≤ 7 days) following injury with children presenting later (> 7 days) with femoral neck fractures. This critical appraisal evaluated 15 patients according to their timing of presentation and surgery from the initial day of injury (Group A: operated ≤ 7 days or Group B: > 7 days of injury). Patients with traumatic femoral neck fractures with Delbet 1 to 4 subtypes who were skeletally immature (age ≤ 16 years) were included in the study. Pathological fractures and post-infective fractures were not included. Each patient's secondary loss of reduction was calculated by measuring the Neck shaft angle (NSA) on the immediate post-operative radiograph and at the union. A change in NSA of ≥ 5 degrees was considered a significant loss of reduction. Ratliff's Criteria was used to analyze the final result, and a thorough record of complications was kept. There were no significant variations in the two groups' with respect to distributions of age, sex, injury mechanism, or fracture pattern. The most frequent injury culprit in both groups was falling from a height. Type II fracture pattern (54.54%) was more common in group A, while Type III and Type II fracture pattern was equally distributed in group B. In group A, the mean operation time was 55 ± 8.25 minutes, whereas in group B, it was 65 ± 15 minutes (

    Abstract In the literature, there is little information available regarding the behavior of composite beams made up of reinforced concrete (RC) and ultra-ductile fiber-reinforced concrete (UDFRC). In this study, UDFRC was examined for its effectiveness in enhancing the strength of RC beams. With a tensile strength of 4.35 MPa and a strain capacity of 2.5%, PVA-based UDFRC was prepared. The performance of 12 medium-sized reinforced concrete (RC) beams was measured under four-point flexural loading. The beams measured 1800 mm long, 150 mm wide, and 200-260 mm deep. The experimental program on beam specimens was divided into two phases. In the first, four 150 × 200 × 1800 mm RC beams with UDFRC layer thicknesses of 0, 30, 60, and 90 mm were tested. Additionally, four concrete and four concrete-UDFRC beams were investigated, measuring 150 × 230 × 1800 mm and 150 × 260 × 1800 mm, respectively. The study focused on medium-sized, slender RC beams under quasi-static loads and room temperature with additional or substituted UDFRC layers. As a result of replacing concrete with UDFRC, the load-carrying capacity at first crack and steel yield significantly increased between 18.4 and 43.1%, but the ultimate load-carrying capacity increased only in the range of 6.3-10.8%. Furthermore, beams with additional UDFRC layers could carry 30-50% more load than their concrete counterparts. An RC-UDFRC beam had a load-carrying capacity 10-15% greater than that of a comparable RC beam. Generally, there is a lower deflection response in UDFRC-concrete composite RC beams than in control concrete beams. The UDFRC layering can potentially improve the load-carrying capacity of RC beams, at least when ductility provisions are considered.

    Abstract In recent years, the field of construction engineering has experienced a significant paradigm shift, embracing the integration of machine learning (ML) methodologies, with a particular emphasis on forecasting the characteristics of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC). Despite the theoretical sophistication of existing models, persistent challenges remain-their opacity, lack of transparency, and real-world relevance for practitioners. To address this gap and advance our current understanding, this study employs the extra gradient (XG) boosting algorithm, crafting a comprehensive approach. Grounded in a meticulously curated database drawn from 43 seminal publications, encompassing 420 distinct records, this research focuses predominantly on three primary fiber types: crimped, hooked, and mil-cut. Complemented by hands-on experimentation involving 20 diverse SFRC mixtures, this empirical campaign is further illuminated through the strategic use of partial dependence plots (PDPs), revealing intricate relationships between input parameters and consequent compressive strength. A pivotal revelation of this research lies in the identification of optimal SFRC formulations, offering tangible insights for real-world applications. The developed ML model stands out not only for its sophistication but also its tangible accuracy, evidenced by exemplary performance against independent datasets, boasting a commendable mean target-prediction ratio of 99%. To bridge the theory-practice gap, we introduce a user-friendly digital interface, thoroughly designed to guide professionals in optimizing and accurately predicting the compressive strength of SFRC. This research thus contributes to the construction and civil engineering sectors by enhancing predictive capabilities and refining mix designs, fostering innovation, and addressing the evolving needs of the industry.

    Abstract Anthocyanins are a class of flavonoids having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They defend plants against various biotic and abiotic stresses and are synthesized by a specific branch of the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway. Different regulatory mechanisms have been found to regulate anthocyanin biosynthesis in plants. These include the MYB-bHLH-WDR (MBW) MBW trimeric complex consisting of bHLH, R2R3 MYB, and WD40 transcription factors. Epigenetic and Post-translational modification (PTMs) of MBW complex and various other transcription factors play important role in both plant developmental processes and modulating plant response to different environmental conditions. Recent studies have broadened our understanding of the role of various epigenetic (methylation and histone modification) and PTMs (phosphorylation, acetylation, ubiquitylation, sumoylation, etc.) mechanisms in regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis in plants. In this review, we are updating various epigenetic and PTMs modifications of various transcription factors which regulate anthocyanin biosynthesis in various plants. In addition to this, we have also briefly discussed in which direction future research on epigenetic and PTMs can be taken so that we can engineer medicinal plants for enhanced secondary metabolite biosynthesis.

    Abstract The leaves of Artemisia annua contain GSTs (Glandular secretory trichomes) that can secrete and store artemisinin, the drug most effective for treating uncomplicated malaria. Therefore, increasing the density of GSTs in A. annua is an efficient way to enhance artemisinin content. However, our understanding of how GSTs develop still needs to be improved. Here, we isolated an A. annua homolog of AtGL3 (GLABRA3), known as AaGL3-like, that positively regulates trichome density in A. annua. AaGL3-like is nuclear-localized and transcriptionally active. It is least expressed in roots and most prominently in aerial components like leaves, stems, and inflorescence. Under JA and GA hormonal treatments, AaGL3-like expression is significantly increased. In transgenic over-expression AaGL3-like lines, trichome developmental genes such as AaHD1 and AaGSW2 showed much increased expression. The AaGL3RNAi line exhibited considerably lower levels of AaHD1 and AaGSW2 transcripts. As a result, the AaGL3-RNAi lines showed reduced levels of artemisinin content and trichome density compared to wild-type and overexpression lines. Additionally, we have found that when co-expressed with AaJAZ8, the induction of trichome developmental genes was reduced as compared to individual OEAaGL3-like lines. Further, AaJAZ8 directly binds to AaGL3-like in the Y2H assay. These findings suggest that AaGL3-like is a jasmonate-induced bHLH transcription factor that drastically increases the final accumulation of artemisinin content by regulating trichome density in A. annua.

    Abstract The success of universal coverage depends on ensuring that patients have access to medicine. Encouraging local production of medicines in developing countries can provide better access to medicines. In addition to determining the quality of pharmaceutical goods, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) also determine their cost. According to market forecasts, the active pharmaceutical ingredients market is expected to increase from USD 193.15 billion in 2023 to USD 285.29 billion by 2028. Pakistan largely depends on India and China for its Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient requirements. It was feared that a shortage of medicines would result from Pakistan's government suspending all trade with India on August 9, 2019. To improve health security in Pakistan, the Government of Pakistan has introduced an API promotion Policy in 2022. Financial and non-financial incentives have helped many countries develop their API industries like China, India, and Bangladesh. The current domestic API market of Pakistan is around 150 million $. After the introduction of the policy, the existing units are increasing their capacity while eight new API units are in the process of establishment. Through local production of APIs and intermediates, Pakistan can improve its health security by learning from the experiences of neighbouring countries, especially China.

    Abstract Utilizing waste materials in producing ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) represents a highly effective approach to creating environmentally sustainable concrete using renewable resources. This study focused on incorporating ground glass cullet (GP) at various replacement levels in UHPC production. Additionally, plastic bottle fibers (PBFs) were derived from discarded plastic bottles and employed in the mix. The replacement levels for GP spanned from 0% to 40%. Single-use plastic bottles were transformed into strip fibers, both with and without the inclusion of microsteel fibers, at varying contents of 1.1% and 2.2% (volume-based). A single-fiber test was conducted on PBFs under different strain rates. The introduction of optimal GP content had a profound positive iMPact on compressive strength. Incorporating 2.2% plastic strips induced strain hardening behavior, while further inclusion of microsteel fibers resulted in substantial enhancements in mechanical properties. Two types of microsteel fibers were employed, characterized by different aspect ratios of 65 and 100. The optimum GP content was identified as 10%. Moreover, the UHPC mix achieved superior compressive strength, exceeding 140 MPa when composed of 1.3% (volume-based) microsteel fibers with an aspect ratio of 65 and 2.2% PBF (volume-based). Notably, mixtures featuring microsteel fibers with a higher aspect ratio demonstrated the highest flexural strength, exceeding 8000 N in the presence of 2.2% PBF. Longer microsteel fibers exhibited adequate slip properties, facilitating strain transfer and achieving a strain-hardening response in conjunction with plastic bottle fibers. These findings illuminate the potential for harnessing hazardous waste materials to improve the performance and sustainability of UHPC formulations.
