Abstract The SPECTRa-T project has developed text-mining tools to extract named chemical entities (NCEs), such as chemical names and terms, and chemical objects (COs), e.g., experimental spectral assignments and physical chemistry properties, from electronic theses (e-theses). Although NCEs were readily identified within the two major document formats studied, only the use of structured documents enabled identification of chemical objects and their association with the relevant chemical entity (e.g., systematic chemical name). A corpus of theses was analyzed and it is shown that a high degree of semantic information can be extracted from structured documents. This integrated information has been deposited in a persistent Resource Description Framework (RDF) triple-store that allows users to conduct semantic searches. The strength and weaknesses of several document formats are reviewed.

Abstract Six patients with severe combined immunodeficiency were transplanted with bone marrow from their HLA haploidentical parents. T-lymphocytes were removed by complement mediated lysis with a monoclonal antibody (CAMPATH-I) followed by rosetting with sheep erythrocytes. The patients were pre-conditioned with marrow ablative chemotherapy, using busulphan and cyclophosphamide. There was graft take in five patients, with evidence of transient acute graft-versus-host disease only. Three patients are alive and well greater than 5 months after transplant, and one who is 12 months post graft has full reconstitution of cell mediated and humoral immunity, including specific antibody response to immunization. Transplantation across major histocompatibility barriers can be successfully achieved using this method of treatment of donor marrow.

Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally. The underlying pathological driver of CVD is atherosclerosis. The primary risk factor for atherosclerosis is elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Dysregulation of cholesterol metabolism is synonymous with a rise in LDL-C. Due to the complexity of cholesterol metabolism and atherosclerosis mathematical models are routinely used to explore their non-trivial dynamics. Mathematical modelling has generated a wealth of useful biological insights, which have deepened our understanding of these processes. To date however, no model has been developed which fully captures how whole-body cholesterol metabolism intersects with atherosclerosis. The main reason for this is one of scale. Whole body cholesterol metabolism is defined by macroscale physiological processes, while atherosclerosis operates mainly at a microscale. This work describes how a model of cholesterol metabolism was combined with a model of atherosclerotic plaque formation. This new model is capable of reproducing the output from its parent models. Using the new model, we demonstrate how this system can be utilized to identify interventions that lower LDL-C and abrogate plaque formation.

Abstract Introduction: While suicides in the United States decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, statistically significant decreases have been limited to White people throughout a large portion of 2020.
Methods: This paper outlines possible explanations for racial/ethnic differences in suicidality in the early pandemic phases.
Results: We propose both distal (i.e., tele-mental health usage, internet and technology access, employment protections, and economic security) and proximal (cultural beliefs, coping strategies, clustering, pulling together, and embracing life) factors that may have helped build and foster community and mental wellness. However, this paper argues these factors did not extend, or did not extend as much, to many communities of color.
Conclusions: We argue that these disparities are due to the myriad effects of discrimination and systemic racism, encapsulated broadly by the minority stress theory, and provide suggestions for relief and research.

Abstract Background: Cervicofacial rhytidectomies are one of the most common procedures in the United States. There are many different methods and techniques involved, but all aim to minimize blood loss and procedure time. In our study, we investigated the addition of tranexamic acid (TXA) to tumescent anesthesia during rhytidectomy procedures. Our objective was to analyze the difference in mean procedure time and estimated blood loss in patients undergoing both general and other anesthesia types, with and without the addition of TXA, while maintaining patient safety.
Methods: Seventy-four patients underwent a standard superficial musculoaponeurotic system plication technique rhytidectomy, with 60 patients undergoing general anesthesia and the remaining 14 undergoing other anesthesia types. Forty patients were treated without TXA, whereas the remaining 34 were treated with TXA.
Results: Although the difference was not statistically significant, the addition of TXA resulted in a lower procedure time and estimated blood loss. Within anesthesia type, there was also a slight difference that TXA decreased blood loss and procedure time. We did find that general anesthesia type does significantly impact procedure time and estimated blood loss, when compared with other anesthesia types, independent of TXA use.
Conclusion: The use of tumescent TXA may allow for a faster procedure with less blood loss, although further studies with a larger sample size are needed.
