Abstract A program designed to provide accompaniment reflects a salutogenesis emphasis aimed at sustaining the professional well-being of experienced principals. A mixed methods pilot study focused on participant (N = 12) orientation, principles of accompaniment, mission-aligned processes, leadership agency, structured conversations, and nominated outcomes. Data were collected over twelve months at three stages using online survey. Australian Catholic principals reported a positive orientation experience, professional well-being, the comprehensiveness of the program, and the manageability of its implementation. Discussion confirmed design elements contributed to the wholistic nature of accompaniment linking body, mind, and spirit in conversational processes and the transformative effects of these exchanges on professional practice and well-being.

Abstract The objective of this study was to assess annual, seasonal and spatial trends in copper sediment concentrations in an agricultural California stream (Cache Slough) based on sampling 12 sites over two seasons (spring and fall) in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The relationship between copper sediment concentrations and precipitation was also evaluated. The results from this study showed that copper sediment concentrations from Cache Slough ranging from 19 to 63 ug/g dw were similar to concentrations reported in European agricultural streams. Copper sediment concentrations were not reported to increase over time in this agricultural waterbody where copper was used as a fungicide. However, spatial differences in copper sediment concentrations were reported among sites with the highest concentrations in the middle waterbody section. Seasonal analysis showed no significant difference in copper sediment concentrations for both spring and fall for 2012 and 2013 but 2014 spring concentrations were statistically higher than fall concentrations when precipitation was lower than the two previous years. There were no statistically significant relationships between copper sediment concentrations and precipitation for the three-year period based on an analysis by year and season.

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of a pharmacist-managed transitions of care (TOC) clinic on outcomes in a posthospitalization population with diabetes.
Methods: A retrospective single center cohort study utilized electronic health records to identify discharged patients followed by the inpatient endocrinology team. The primary outcome was 30-day readmission rates in the target population. Secondary outcomes include 90-day readmission rates, time to first follow-up, emergency department/urgent care encounters, change in A1C, retention with endocrinology, referrals for diabetes education, and types of interventions. The control group included patients prior to the initiation of the TOC clinic compared to patients seen in the TOC clinic, evenly matched by A1C. Readmission rates and other clinical data were queried up to 4 months after discharge.
Results: Patients in the TOC cohort had similar 30-day readmission rates compared to the non-TOC cohort and were found to have lower A1C values within 120 days of discharge. Overall, patients in the TOC cohort were more likely to have a follow-up appointment and had closer follow-up after discharge.
Conclusion: This study highlights that although there was no difference in readmission rates, a pharmacist-managed diabetes TOC clinic may decrease time to follow-up and improve long-term diabetes outcomes.

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe and synthesize the current research regarding the prevailing cognitive domains impacted by acute traumatic brain injury (TBI) in adults. Standardized and nonstandardized assessments of cognitive function and comorbidities influencing cognitive function during the initial stages of recovery are presented to help guide clinical assessment.
Method: A scoping review, guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses framework, was used to explore four electronic databases. Searches identified peer-reviewed empirical literature addressing aspects of cognitive domains impacted after TBI, cognitive assessment, and comorbidities impacting assessment in adults after acute TBI.
Results: A total of 1,072 records were identified and reduced to 75 studies based on inclusion criteria. The cognitive domains most impacted in acute TBI were memory and executive function. The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was the most frequently used tool to assess cognitive abilities, despite it being a measurement of consciousness, not of cognition. Psychological changes were the most commonly noted comorbidity impacting cognitive assessment.
Conclusions: Assessment of cognition after acute TBI requires a multifaceted approach that considers the typical profile of cognitive impairment, as well as patient-specific factors influencing cognitive abilities following initial brain injury. The present results support the generally held view that memory and executive function deficits are common cognitive difficulties associated with acute TBI in adults. The GCS remains the most widely used tool to assess function, though numerous tools are available that specifically address cognitive domains. Acute medical comorbidities common within this stage of injury are highlighted, as well as gaps of clinical knowledge that remain.

Abstract While surveying plants and algae on the Chesapeake Bay side of the Eastern Shore of Maryland (USA), we encountered an unexpected green alga in shallow estuarine waters of Somerset County. A morphological investigation confirmed that it was Batophora oerstedii, a species previously known from the Caribbean and Bahamas, and not known north of Florida along the eastern coast of the United States until now. Repeated observation of several populations over the past five years confirmed that B. oerstedii has become established in Maryland waters. We hypothesize that global climate change may have contributed to the establishment of B. oerstedii in Chesapeake Bay. The impact of this introduced seaweed here merits additional study.

Abstract Heightened inflammation is an important indicator of many diseases that affect the equine athlete. Haptoglobin, an acute phase protein present in blood, is commonly used as a biomarker for systemic inflammation. Recent literature provides a range for plasma haptoglobin in horses of 0.29–2.26mg/mL. When inflammation or infection occurs, the acute phase response of the immune system is activated, and haptoglobin concentrations can rise to 9 times that of healthy concentrations. A variety of assays have been developed to measure haptoglobin concentration, but there is disagreement in the scientific literature regarding which assay measures haptoglobin concentrations most accurately. The objective of this study was to compare 2 commonly used haptoglobin assays: The TriDelta “PHASE” Haptoglobin Assay (TD) and the ALPCO Horse Haptoglobin Assay (AP). The TD assay is based on the peroxidase activity of the haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex at lower pHs. The AP assay is a double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunoassay. Blood samples were collected from 8 Quarter Horse long yearlings (16–18 mo) split into a nonexercised group and exercised group. These horses and the experimental design were the focus of a different study. A total of 80 samples were collected over the 10-week study. The plasma was separated and stored in a –80°C freezer until analysis. Samples were measured in triplicate for eachassay. Results were compared using Pearson correlation analysis, linear regression, and Bland-Altman analysis, with significance set at P < 0.05. There was a good correlation (0.76) between the 2 assays. The linear regression (TD = 1.5*AP+1.9, r2 = 0.58) and the Bland-Altman (bias 2.7, 95% LOA 0.31 to 5.06) analyses indicated that the TD assay results in a higher haptoglobin measurement, with the difference between the assays increasing at higher concentrations. The TD inter-assay and intra-assay coefficient of variations were 11.4% and 4.4%, respectively. The TD measurements ranged from 1.2 to 8.8 mg/mL with a median of 3.9 mg/mL. The AP inter-assay and intra-assay coefficient of variations were 10.5% and 5.4%, respectively. The AP measurements ranged from 0.1 to 5.6 mg/mL with a median of 1.2 mg/mL. In conclusion, TD haptoglobin measurements were consistently higher than those quantified using the AP assay. The linear relationship indicates that calibration would facilitate some comparison between studies using the different assays; however, there is still significant unexplained variation. With no accepted gold standard for haptoglobin measurement, a more complete validation of one or both commonly used assays is required.

Abstract This paper introduces the special issue on cannabis use in Europe. It describes data on the prevalence of cannabis use in Europe and the more limited data on the prevalence of cannabis use disorders, one of the most common forms of drug problem treated in many countries in Europe. It summarises what research has indicated about the adverse effects of acute and chronic cannabis use and discusses potential health system responses that may reduce some of these harms. These include public education about the risks of cannabis use; screening and brief interventions in primary medical settings; and specialist treatment for cannabis use disorders. It briefly indicates the special issues that may need to be addressed in dealing with the high rates of comorbidity between cannabis use disorders, other types of drug use disorders, and common mental disorders.
