Abstract This current study investigated the trends in public animal shelter intakes and outcomes and the workload of shelter veterinarians in Taiwan from 2012 to 2020 and reports spatial, temporal, and socioeconomic factors associated with these trends. Information about the public animal shelter management of dogs and cats from all counties of Taiwan between 2012 and 2020 was acquired from the National Animal Shelter Management System of the Council of Agriculture Executive Yuan in Taiwan. Ridge regression followed by multivariable linear regression was conducted to examine the risk factors for animal intakes, outcomes, the number of adopted animals, and the estimated veterinary workload in public animal shelters. The intakes and outcomes of shelter animals significantly decreased over time. Euthanasia, which was performed in the shelters, was positively associated with shelter animal intakes and outcomes as it resulted in animal outcomes and thus facilitated the flow of animals in the shelters. Adoption and trap-neuter-vaccination-return, in replacement of euthanasia, became the main reasons for animal outcomes, and with every increase in human fertility rate, the monthly number of adopted animals over the number of animals entering shelters increased by 1.10% (95% CI: 0.21 to 2.00). The veterinary workload in the shelters of two counties exceeded what is regulated by law (i.e., 100 animals per veterinarian) in 2018 and increased to six counties in 2020. This current study reported important trends in the management of public animal shelters in Taiwan, the increasing workload of shelter veterinarians, and factors associated with these trends. It built the epidemiological foundation for future research on methods of improving shelter management and work conditions for shelter staff.

Abstract To reduce metal pipe corrosion, improve product quality, and meet zero liquid discharge (ZLD) criteria, managing chloride ion concentrations in industrial wastewaters from metallurgical and chemical sectors has become increasingly important. This review provides detailed information on the sources, concentration levels, and deleterious effects of chloride ions in representative industrial wastewaters, and also summarizes and discusses various chloride ion removal techniques, including precipitation, ion exchange, physical separation, and advanced oxidation (AOPs). Among these, AOPs are particularly promising due to their ability to couple with other technologies and the diversity of their auxiliary technologies. The development of dechlorination electrode materials by electro-adsorption (CDI) can be inspired by the electrode materials used in chloride ion battery (CIB). This review also provides insights into exploring the effective combination of multiple chloride removal mechanisms, as well as the development of environmentally friendly composite materials. This review provides a theoretical basis and development direction for the effective treatment and secondary utilization of chlorine-containing industrial wastewater in the future.

Abstract Blue light (BL) irradiation has been a potentially efficient treatment for many kinds of tumors. In this study, a BL irradiation (centered at 453 nm in wavelength) was proposed to treat the common human liver cancer cell lines of SMMC-7721 and HepG2, examined by means of flow cytometry, western blot, fluorescence microscope assay. In comparison to control groups, the apoptosis and proliferation inhibition of both BL-treated cells are expressively enhanced by mitochondrial apoptosis. The mechanism of apoptosis is related to the more production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by BL and the corresponding changes in the expression of apoptosis-related Bcl-2, Bax and Bad proteins. In addition, the migration rate of the cancer cells could be reduced after BL irradiation. These results demonstrate that introducing BL irradiation is helpful to establish an effective and low toxicity strategy for the clinical treatment of liver tumors.

Abstract The sample size effect on the deformation behavior of metallic glasses (MGs) has recently become research of intense interest. An inverse sample size effect is observed in previous experimental studies; where the yield strength decreases with decreasing sample size, rather than increasing. We propose a theoretical analysis based on the shear banding process to rationalize the inherent size dependence of yield strength, showing an excellent agreement with experimental results. Our model reveals that the anomalous inverse size effect is, in fact, caused by a transition in failure mode; from a rapid shear banding process with a shear band (SB) traversing the entire sample in bulk MGs, to an immature shear banding process with propagated SBs only at the surface in micron-sized MGs. Our results fill the gap in the current understanding of size effects in the strength and failure mechanism of MGs at different length scales.
