Abstract In this study, contact angles were measured for CO₂ bubbles on six different sandstones (Navajo, Nugget, Bentheimer, Bandera Brown, Berea, and Mt. Simon) that could potentially represent properties of CO₂ storage depositional environments. The impacts of pressure and temperature were studied by focusing on the CO₂ phase behavior in three different scenarios: gaseous, liquid, and supercritical conditions. Despite controlling the sample preparation and cleanliness, CO₂–brine equilibration conditions, and pressure and temperature, there were inconsistencies in contact angle trends that could largely be attributed to natural sample heterogeneity resulting from localized variations in topography, surface roughness, and mineral composition across the surface. Despite these variations, the analysis of 298 measurements from this study showed that 81% of the contact angles were <40°, representing strongly water-wet to (moderately) water-wet behaviors. Also, 17.3% of the measurements were between 40° and 60° (weakly water-wet) and primarily belonged to small CO₂ bubbles (<500 μm) that were heavily impacted by localized surface heterogeneity in natural sandstone samples. In addition, only 1.7% of the measurements had angles greater than 60° and could be classified as no longer water-wet, but these measurements occurred on extremely small bubbles (100–200 μm) that were very dependent on localized surface heterogeneity. While some of the detailed physics of the CO₂/brine/sandstone interface is still poorly understood, from an application standpoint, the sandstones of this study were best characterized as strongly water-wet to (moderately) water-wet.

Abstract Anti-atheist bias in the United States is both persistent and pervasive. However, most experimental psychological research demonstrating anti-atheist bias have used White targets or targets whose race is not explicitly mentioned. Thus, it is unknown whether atheists of colour, who have two stigmatised identities (e.g., their race and atheist identification), are perceived differently from their ingroup counterparts with one stigmatised identity (e.g., Black Christian). Using a between-subjects experimental design we examined White Americans' (n = 286; M

Abstract Escherichia coli have served as important model organisms for over a century-used to elucidate key aspects of genetics, evolution, molecular biology, and pathogenesis. However, defining which strains actually belong to this species is erratic and unstable due to shifts in the characters and criteria used to distinguish bacterial species. Additionally, many isolates designated as E. coli are genetically more closely related to strains of Shigella than to other E. coli, creating a situation in which the entire genus of Shigella and its four species are encompassed within the single species E. coli. We evaluated all complete genomes assigned to E. coli and its closest relatives according to the biological species concept (BSC), using evidence of reproductive isolation and gene flow (i.e., homologous recombination in the case of asexual bacteria) to ascertain species boundaries. The BSC establishes a uniform, consistent, and objective principle that allows species-level classification across all domains of life and does not rely on either phenotypic or genotypic similarity to a defined type-specimen for species membership. Analyzing a total of 1,887 sequenced genomes and comparing our results to other genome-based classification methods, we found few barriers to gene flow among the strains, clades, phylogroups, or species within E. coli and Shigella. Due to the utility in recognizing which strains constitute a true biological species, we designate genomes that form a genetic cohesive group as members of E. coliBIO.

Abstract Recent implementation of the nationwide 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has expanded telephone-based mental health crisis services and created a unified framework for crisis care in the United States. However, the infrastructure for the final step of the crisis continuum-an appropriate mental health service for persons in crisis to receive the care they need-is fragmented, unevenly distributed, underfunded, and understudied. Given the few options for individuals in crisis, most often inpatient psychiatric hospitals are the default option. In this Open Forum, the authors describe the scope of the problem and propose how clinicians, policy makers, and researchers can improve the availability of evidence-based disposition options for individuals in crisis.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has caused over 171,657 confirmed cases and 1,462 deaths in Ghana, particularly among frontline health-workers involved in pandemic response. Prevention measures in Ghana include AstraZeneca 'Covishield' vaccination of health-workers, but research on factors affecting uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in Ghana were initially limited. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse knowledge, attitudes, and initial uptake of Covishield among nurses in the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo, Upper East Region. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 128 district hospital nurses using simple random sampling. We first calculated descriptive statistics and two composite variables summing either participant knowledge or attitude variables, with a threshold over 50% considered 'sufficient' or 'positive' respectively. We then analysed associations between demographic variables and Covishield knowledge, attitudes, or uptake using binomial logistic regression with a 95% confidence interval and p-value of <0.05 considered significant. All participants had heard of Covishield vaccine, with attitudes toward it generally positive (53%), and uptake high (72%). Reasons cited by the 28% unvaccinated included absence during vaccination, having already been infected with COVID-19, lack of trust in vaccine safety/efficacy, or pregnancy/breastfeeding. Education, residence, and family type were the only demographic factors significantly associated with nurses' knowledge about, attitudes towards, or uptake of COVID-19 vaccination. While 'positive' attitude was significantly associated with higher odds of being vaccinated (AOR 4.75; 95%CI 1.59-14.1), 'sufficient' knowledge was not (AOR 1.33; 95%CI 0.53-3.32). This is the first study in Ghana's resource-constrained Upper East region to examine health-worker perceptions of a novel vaccine and showed nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and uptake of COVID-19 vaccination were good overall. Further research is needed to determine how best to address hesitancy and understand findings that attitudes appeared more relevant than knowledge for uptake. Findings are relevant for local health authorities in improving vaccine availability and strengthening emergency risk communication and management of adverse events following immunisation.
