Abstract The scope of highly enantioselective and diastereoselective Michael additions of enolsilanes to unsaturated imide derivatives has been developed with use of [Cu((S,S)-t-Bu-box)](SbF6)2 (1a) as a Lewis acid catalyst. The products of these additions are useful synthons that contain termini capable of differentiation under mild conditions. Michael acceptor pi-facial selectivity is consistent with two-point binding of the imide substrate and can be viewed as an extension of substrate enantioselection in the corresponding Diels-Alder reactions. A model analogous to the one employed to describe the hetero Diels-Alder reaction is proposed to account for the observed relation between enolsilane geometry and product absolute diastereocontrol. Insights into modes of catalyst inactivation are given, including spectroscopic evidence for inhibition of the catalyst by a dihydropyran intermediate that evolves during the course of the reaction. A procedure is disclosed in which an alcohol additive is used to hydrolyze the inhibiting dihydropyran and afford the desilylated Michael adduct in significantly shortened reaction time.

Abstract [formula: see text] Chiral Cu(II) bisoxazoline (box) Lewis acids have been developed as catalysts of the Michael addition of enolsilanes to unsaturated ester derivatives. While enantioselection is stereoregular, the sense of diastereoselection is directly related to thioester enolsilane geometry: (E) enolsilanes give anti adducts and (Z) enolsilanes afford syn adducts. The size of the enolsilane alkylthio substituent directly impacts the magnitude of diastereoselection.

Abstract Invasive parasites have been implicated in the declines of several freshwater species. The swim bladder nematode Anguillicola crassus was introduced into Europe in the 1980s and is considered a threat to the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Infection affects stress resistance and swimming behaviour. European eels produce an immune response against the parasite during the late stages of infection and after repeated infections. We used RNA-seq to examine the molecular response to infection during the poorly understood early stage and identify expression of genes and associated processes that are modified in two immune organs of European eels 3 days post infection with A. crassus. In the spleen, 67 genes were differentially expressed, 32 of which were annotated. Most of these were involved in immune processes and their regulation. Other differentially expressed genes in the spleen were important for heme metabolism and heme turn-over. In the head kidney, 257 genes (134 annotated) were differentially expressed. Several of these were associated with immune functions. Other differentially expressed genes in the head kidney were related to renal function, in particular osmoregulation and paracellular flow. We conclude that the early response of European eels to A. crassus is complex and involves various processes aside from the immune system. We identified molecular changes occurring early during the infection and identified candidate genes and processes which will facilitate future studies aimed at determining the factors affecting European eel viability in the face of this invasive parasite.

Abstract One of the key questions in forensic cases relates to some form of age inference, whether this is how old a crime scene is, when in time a particular crime was committed, or how old the victim was at the time of the crime. These age-related estimations are currently achieved through morphological methods with varying degrees of accuracy. As a result, biomolecular approaches are considered of great interest, with the relative abundances of several protein markers already recognized for their potential forensic significance; however, one of the greatest advantages of proteomic investigations over genomics ones is the wide range of post-translational modifications (PTMs) that make for a complex but highly dynamic resource of information. Here, we explore the abundance of several PTMs including the glycosylation, deamidation, and oxidation of several key proteins (collagen, fetuin A, biglycan, serum albumin, fibronectin and osteopontin) as being of potential value to the development of an age estimation tool worthy of further evaluation in forensic contexts. We find that glycosylations lowered into adulthood but deamidation and oxidation increased in the same age range.

Abstract Sedimentary deposits of Cascadia Basin lap onto the Juan de Fuca Ridge to within 20 km of the spreading axis (Davis and Currie, 1993, doi:10.1139/e93-023). Collectively, these interbeds of hemipelagic mud, mud turbidites, silt turbidites, sand turbidites, and debris-flow deposits act as a relatively low-permeability barrier that inhibits the hydrothermal connection between underlying igneous crust and the overlying reservoir of ocean water. The primary purpose of Leg 168 of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) was to explore the causes and consequences of ridge-flank hydrothermal circulation (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1997c, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.168.101.1997). One important aspect of this overall goal was to determine how changes in thickness of the sediment cover affect heat flow, fluid flow, fluid composition, and chemical alteration of the igneous crust. Fluid circulation through the sediment is influenced by a variety of textural parameters and intrinsic physical properties. Physical properties of sediments usually change in a predictable way with increasing depth and mechanical compaction, but different lithologies display different compaction gradients.
Shipboard scientists subdivided the sedimentary succession throughout the study area into three principal lithofacies units and subunits. In general, these sequences coarsen and thicken upward from a basal interval of hemipelagic mud through a unit of mud and silt turbidites into a unit of mud, silt turbidites, sand turbidites, and debris-flow deposits. The sediment index properties (bulk density, water content, porosity, and void ratio) were measured aboard the JOIDES Resolution (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1997b, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.168.104.1997; 1997d, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.168.105.1997; 1997a, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.168.106.1997). Shorebased work was devoted to accurate measurements of grain-size parameters. To allow for valid cross-correlation, the samples analyzed for grain-size distributions were taken from core intervals immediately adjacent to those of the physical properties specimens. The main purposes of this report are to show how the grain size and physical properties data are interrelated, and to determine how lithology might affect hydrologic properties of the sedimentary cover.
