Abstract Background: There is increasing evidence that circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in the processes of preeclampsia (PE). Circ_0030042 was found to be abnormally expressed in PE patients. However, the role and molecular mechanism of circ_0030042 in PE progression remains unclear.
Methods: Quantitative real-time PCR was used for determining the expression of circ_0030042, microRNA (miR)- 942-5p and lipopolysaccharide induced TNF-α factor (LITAF). Trophoblast cell functions were determined using cell counting kit 8 assay, EdU assay, flow cytometry and transwell assay. The protein levels of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related markers and LITAF were examined using western blot analysis. Dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA pull-down assay were used to verify RNA interaction.
Results: Circ_0030042 had an elevated expression in PE patients, and its overexpression inhibited trophoblast cell growth, invasion, and EMT process. Circ_0030042 served as miR-942-5p sponge, and miR-942-5p inhibitor also reversed the regulation of circ_0030042 on trophoblast cell growth, invasion and EMT process. LITAF was targeted by miR-942-5p, and its knockdown abolished the inhibition effect of miR-942-5p on trophoblast cell growth, invasion, and EMT process. Also, circ_0030042 regulated LITAF expression via sponging miR-942-5p.
Conclusion: Circ_0030042 regulated trophoblast cell growth, invasion, and EMT process via the miR-942-5p/LITAF axis, providing a novel insight for PE treatment.

Abstract Smartphone Addiction is a social issue caused by excessive smartphone use, affecting decision-making processes. Current research on the risky decision-making abilities of smartphone addicts is limited. This study used the functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) brain imaging technique and a Sequential Risk-Taking Task experimental paradigm to investigate the decision-making behavior and brain activity of smartphone addicts under varying risk levels. Using a mixed experimental design, the research assessed decision-making ability and brain activation levels as dependent variables across two groups (addiction and control), two risk amounts (high and low), and two outcomes (gain and loss). The study included 42 participants, with 25 in the addiction group and 17 in the control group. Results indicated that risk level significantly impacted the decision-making ability of smartphone addicts, with high-risk levels leading to weaker decision-making ability and increased risk-taking. However, at low-risk levels, decision-making abilities between addicts and healthy individuals showed no significant difference. Furthermore, brain imaging results using fNIRS revealed stronger brain activation in the dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (dlPFC) region for smartphone addicts under loss outcome conditions, with no significant differences between the two groups in terms of brain activation at varying risk volumes. These findings are critical in promoting healthy smartphone use, guiding clinical treatment, and advancing brain mechanism research.

Abstract Boiling can transfer a vast amount of heat and thereby is widely used for cooling advanced systems with high power density. However, the capillary force of most existing wicks is insufficient to surpass the liquid replenishing resistance for high-efficient boiling. Herein, we report a new microgroove wick on high-conductive copper substrates that was constructed via ultraviolet nanosecond pulsed laser milling. The phase explosion, combined with melting and resolidification effects of laser milling induces dense microcavities with sizes around several micrometers on the microgroove surface. The hierarchical microstructures significantly improve the wettability of the microgroove wicks to obtain strong capillary and meanwhile provide abundant effective nucleation sites. The boiling heat transfer in a visualized flat heat pipe shows that the new wicks enable sustainable liquid replenishing even under antigravity conditions, thus resulting in maximum 33-fold improvement of equivalent thermal conductivity when compared with the copper base. This research provides both scientific and technical bases for the design and manufacture of high-performance phase change cooling devices.

Abstract Lymph-node metastasis is the most perilous cancer progressive state, where long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) has been confirmed to be an important genetic indicator in cancer prediction. However, lncRNA expression profile is often characterized of large features and small samples, it is urgent to establish an efficient judgment to deal with such high dimensional lncRNA data, which will aid in clinical targeted treatment. Thus, in this study, a local linear reconstruction guided distance metric learning is put forward to handle lncRNA data for determination of cancer lymph-node metastasis. In the original locally linear embedding (LLE) approach, any point can be approximately linearly reconstructed using its nearest neighborhood points, from which a novel distance metric can be learned by satisfying both nonnegative and sum-to-one constraints on the reconstruction weights. Taking the defined distance metric and lncRNA data supervised information into account, a local margin model will be deduced to find a low dimensional subspace for lncRNA signature extraction. At last, a classifier is constructed to predict cancer lymph-node metastasis, where the learned distance metric is also adopted. Several experiments on lncRNA data sets have been carried out, and experimental results show the performance of the proposed method by making comparisons with some other related dimensionality reduction methods and the classical classifier models.

Abstract The excessive use of chemical fertilisers seriously worsened the agro-ecological environment in China. Despite the Chinese government enacted a series of policies to reduce chemical fertilisers use, the situation has not been significantly improved. Existing researches about the fertiliser reduction mainly from a single subject, but farmers' chemical fertiliser use behaviour is jointly affected by multiple subjects, including farmers, market and government. To reduce chemical fertilisers use and realize the green and sustainable development of agriculture, this paper builds a tripartite evolution model of the government, farmers and consumers based on evolutionary game theory, and simulates and discusses the behaviour of the government, farmers and consumers in the process of fertiliser reduction. Results indicate: (1) Under different partnership modes, the tripartite of government, farmers and consumers can evolve to reach a stable state. (2) The government's ecological compensation for farmers’ fertiliser reduction and subsidies for consumers' green consumption are inadequate. Raising ecological compensation to 200%–267% of the original level could incentive farmers chemical fertiliser reduction. Raising the price subsidies for consumers’ green consumption to approximately 136% of the original level could help motivate farmers to make a green production transformation through the market mechanism. (3) Farmers' risk expectations of fertiliser reduction is negatively correlated with farmers' chemical fertilisers reduction willingness and consumers' green consumption willingness. Consumers’ trust is positively correlated with farmers' chemical fertilisers reduction willingness and consumers' green consumption willingness. This study provides theoretical guidance for the government, farmers and consumers in making scientific decisions, serving as a policy reference for the government to promote chemical fertiliser reduction.

Abstract Stimulated-emission-depletion (STED) nanoscope achieves super-resolution imaging by using a donut-shaped depletion beam to darken the fluorophores around the excitation spot. As an important factor determining the resolution of imaging, the coaxiality between the excitation and the depletion beam is required to be maintained at the nanoscale, which is often degraded by various interference such as ambient vibration and temperatures etc. Here, we propose a specially designed STED illumination module to guarantee the coaxiality between the two beams while modulating the phase of the depletion beam. This STED illumination module can realize phase modulation, polarization adjustment, pulse delay and two beams coaxial at the same time. With the experiments, the module can guarantee the two beams are stably coaxial for a long time. We imaged fluorescence particles with diameter 40 nm and got images of 40 nm full width at half maximum. Adjacent microfilaments at 80 nm being clearly distinguished with our STED nonoscope demonstrates that it could be well applied to biological samples.
