Title translation Correlation between serum ferritin, erythrocyte and hemoglobin indices in infants living at 3400 m altitude.
Abstract Anemia (An) is a public health problem in South America, with iron deficiency (ID) as the main cause. In high-altitude cities, hypobaric hypoxia causes an increase in hemoglobin (Hb) levels in residents. For the diagnosis of An, Hb is measured, which is modified after erythrocyte indices (EI) measurements. There is evidence that there is an overestimation of the prevalence of An at high altitudes.
Objective: To correlate serum ferritin (SF) with Hb and EI, and to determine the Hb cut-off point for predicting ID in 6-month-old infants at 3400 m of altitude.
Subjects and method: 128 infants aged 6 months at 3400 m altitude were evaluated. The SF was considered an independent variable. IE and Hb were the dependent variables. The An in the infant was defined with an Hb < 13.4 g/dl. The DH was defined by FS <12 ug/dL. Data were processed in SPSS® version 25. Spearman correlation was used for bivariate analysis. The ROC curve was constructed to determine the Hb cut-off point for ID.
Results: The highest correlation of SF was observed with mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), rho = 0.449 (p < 0.001), and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) rho= 0.423 (p < 0.001). The Hb cut-off point according to SF, defining ID was 12.15 g/dL (ROC curve: 0.704; 95% CI: 0.597-0.811; p < 0.001).
Conclusion: MCV and MCH showed a better correlation with SF. The cubic and logarithmic models were the ones that best represented these relationships, respectively. Hb < 12.15 g/dL allows diagnosing ID in 6-month-old infants at 3400 m altitude.

Abstract Haemonchus contortus (Hc) is a hematophagous parasite affecting the health and productivity of flocks. The administration of chemical anthelmintic drugs (AH) is the common method of deworming; however, generates resistance in the parasites to AH and it is a public health risk due to drug residues in milk, meat and sub-products. Natural compounds from plants are explored to diminish this parasitosis, improving their health and productivity, without the negative effects of AH. Ipomoea genus is a group of climbing plants belonging to the Convulvulaceae family possessing perennial leaves and tuberous roots. Medicinal properties has been attributed to this plant including nutritional agents, emetics, diuretics, diaphoretics, purgatives and pesticides. The objective of this study was assessing the in vitro nematocidal activity of a hydroalcoholic extract (HA-E) obtained from Ipomoea pauciflora (Cazahuate) flowers against Hc infective larvae (L3) and to identify its phytochemical profile (PhC-P). The assay was carried out using microtiter plates (MTP). Four HA-E concentrations were assessed and Ivermectin and distilled water were used as positive and negative control groups, respectively. Approximately 100 Hc L3 were deposited in each well (n=12) and incubated at 25-35°C for 7 days. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and a General Linear Model (GLM) followed by Tukey test (P<0.05). The treatments showing a concentration-dependent effect (CDE) were analyzed to identify their 50% and 90% lethal concentrations (CL50, 90) via a Probit Analysis. The highest mortality was observed at 50 mg/mL (82.64 ± 0.71%) and the lowest at 6.25 mg/mL (56.46 ± 2.49%), showing a CDE with increasing mortality from 6.25 to 50 mg/mL. The PhC-P revealed the presence of alkaloids, coumarins, flavonoids, tannins and triterpenes/ sterols. A HA-E from flowers of I. pauciflora will be considered to assess its potential use in the control of haemonchosis in small ruminants.

Abstract Most children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), in resource-limited settings (RLS), are diagnosed after the age of four. Our work confirmed and extended results of Pierce that eye tracking could discriminate between typically developing (TD) children and those with ASD. We demonstrated the initial 15 s was at least as discriminating as the entire video. We evaluated the GP-MCHAT-R, which combines the first 15 s of manually-coded gaze preference (GP) video with M-CHAT-R results on 73 TD children and 28 children with ASD, 36-99 months of age. The GP-MCHAT-R (AUC = 0.89 (95%CI: 0.82-0.95)), performed significantly better than the MCHAT-R (AUC = 0.78 (95%CI: 0.71-0.85)) and gaze preference (AUC = 0.76 (95%CI: 0.64-0.88)) alone. This tool may enable early screening for ASD in RLS.

Abstract Saturated N-heterocyclic carbenes have unique ligand properties that differ even from their unsaturated analogs. While the unsaturated version has been extensively used in multidentate ligand scaffolds, the incorporation of the saturated version is less common. Here we report the straightforward synthesis of a new bis-saturated N-heterocyclic carbene ligand wherein the carbene moieties are linked by a flexible meta-xylyl unit. Carbene metal complexes of the proligand can be generated by direct metalation, transmetallation or base assisted metalation all of which lead to monodentate coordination modes of silver or iridium. Attempts at direct metalation using zirconium tetrakis-dimethylamide did not lead to complex formation but to the chloroform adduct or amide addition product. As yet, a method to generate pincer complexes from this ligand has not been found. The flexible nature of the xylyl linker as well as the higher σ-bacisity and π-acidity are postulated to contribute to these results.

Abstract Study design: Retrospective cohort analysis.
Objectives: A growing number of publications have utilized the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) database, but none have compared it to other large databases. The objective of this study was to compare SRS complications with those in administrative databases.
Summary of background data: The Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) and Kid's Inpatient Database (KID) captured a greater number of overall complications while the SRS M&M data provided a greater incidence of spine-related complications following adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) surgery. Chi-square was used to obtain statistical significance, with p < .05 considered significant.
Methods: The SRS 2004-2007 (9,904 patients), NIS 2004-2007 (20,441 patients) and KID 2003-2006 (10,184 patients) databases were analyzed for AIS patients who underwent fusion. Comparable variables were queried in all three databases, including patient demographics, surgical variables, and complications.
Results: Patients undergoing AIS in the SRS database were slightly older (SRS 14.4 years vs. NIS 13.8 years, p < .0001; KID 13.9 years, p < .0001) and less likely to be male (SRS 18.5% vs. NIS 26.3%, p < .0001; KID 24.8%, p < .0001). Revision surgery (SRS 3.3% vs. NIS 2.4%, p < .0001; KID 0.9%, p < .0001) and osteotomy (SRS 8% vs. NIS 2.3%, p < .0001; KID 2.4%, p < .0001) were more commonly reported in the SRS database. The SRS database reported fewer overall complications (SRS 3.9% vs. NIS 7.3%, p < .0001; KID 6.6%, p < .0001). However, when respiratory complications (SRS 0.5% vs. NIS 3.7%, p < .0001; KID 4.4%, p < .0001) were excluded, medical complication rates were similar across databases. In contrast, SRS reported higher spine-specific complication rates. Mortality rates were similar between SRS versus NIS (p = .280) and SRS versus KID (p = .08) databases.
Conclusions: There are similarities and differences between the three databases. These discrepancies are likely due to the varying data-gathering methods each organization uses to collect their morbidity data.
    Level of evidence: Level IV.

Abstract The conjugation of organometallic groups to current β-lactam antibiotics is a field of increasing study due to the ability of certain organometallic groups to enhance the antibiotic potency of these drugs. Herein, we report the antibacterial properties of two metallocenyl (ferrocenyl and ruthenocenyl) 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA) antibiotic conjugates. Continuing a trend we found in our previous studies, the ruthenocenyl conjugate showed greater antibacterial activity than its ferrocenyl counterpart. Compared with the previously published 7-aminodesacetoxycephalosporanic acid (7-ADCA) conjugates, the 3-acetyloxymethyl group significantly improved the compounds' activity. Furthermore, the Rc-7-ACA compound was more active against clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolates than the ampicillin reference. Noticeably, neither of the two new compounds showed an undesirable toxic effect in HeLa and L929 cells at the concentrations at which they displayed strong antibacterial effects. The antibacterial activity of the two metallocenyl 7-ACA derivatives was further confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM micrographs showed that bacteria treated with metallocenyl 7-ACA derivatives feature cell wall damage and morphology changes. Using a CTX-M-14 β-lactamase competition assay based on nitrocefin hydrolysis, we showed that the Rc-7-ACA bound more favorably to CTX-M-14 than its ferrocenyl counterpart, again confirming the superiority of the ruthenocenyl moiety over the ferrocenyl one in interacting with proteins. We also report a 1.47 Å resolution crystal structure of Rc-7-ACA in complex with the CTX-M-14 E166A mutant, an enzyme sharing a similar active site configuration with penicillin-binding proteins, the molecular target of β-lactam antibiotics. These results strengthen the case for the antibacterial utility of the Rc and Fc groups.

Abstract Emergency usage intention and behavior are crucial to business service success for m-Health providers and patient healthcare service. This study aimed to identify the factors that influence m-Health acceptance and the effect of emergency use intentions on usage behavior among Taiwanese m-Health users by adopting and extending the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). This study also examines the moderating role of gender and age in the effects of the independent variables on satisfaction with m-Health services. An online questionnaire was used to collect data from 371 participants. The results revealed that performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, and trust had positive effects on user satisfaction. Additionally, m-Health knowledge and user satisfaction had positive effects on emergency use intentions. However, social influence and effort expectancy did not have a significant effect on satisfaction. Moreover, age and gender significantly moderated the effects of some predictors.
