Abstract The knowledge of the associations between the variables and the cause–effect discrimination allows the breeders to make efficient of new cultivars development with traits that meet the demands of producers and consumers. Therefore, the present work aimed to study the associations among the quality variables of papaya (Carica papaya L.) fruits and the effects on selection process. Eight variables related to fruit quality were evaluated in 62 topcross hybrids. The phenotypic and genotypic correlations and path analyses were performed to verify the associations between the variables and the effects on pulp volume. Canonical correlation analysis between primary and secondary quality variables was also carried out. Fruit firmness and soluble solids content showed a positive and significant genotypic correlation, providing evidence for selecting fruits with high averages for both variables. Fruit weight and pulp thickness (PT) were the variables that most contributed to the reduction and increased pulp volume percentage (PV%), respectively. The canonical correlation analysis showed an increase in PT associated with an increase in the fruit length and PV%variables. The physical–chemical variables showed a low association with others, which will make the selection process more laborious to obtain satisfactory gains between the groups of variables.

Abstract High elevation lakes are extreme ecosystems and serve as sentinels of various global changes. An expedition to Volcán Llullaillaco in 1996 discovered an unstudied high‐elevation lake (6,170 m a.s.l.) that probably was formed as a result of the past eruptive events or climatic processes such as glacial retreat in the lake basin. This article describes an initial physical characterization of the lake and its microbial communities derived from two sampling expeditions in 2013 and 2016. The microbial community in the lake, with an area between 1.2 and 1.4 ha and a depth of 6.8 m, was dominated by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Haloarchaea. In addition, 26 bacterial isolates were identified within the genera Subtercola, Xylophilus, Rhodanobacter, Mesorhizobium and Pseudomonas. Lago Llullaillaco is one of the highest recorded lakes in the world, and this study highlights the unique microbial diversity of this aquatic ecosystem and the importance of its preservation to understand the complex biological processes under polyextreme conditions.

Abstract Jambu, a plant native to the Amazon, is rich in essential oils, particularly spilanthols and phytols. Although hydroponic cultivation of this vegetable is practiced, the process remains relatively understudied. In this context, this study aimed to assess the influence of electrical conductivity of nutrient solutions on jambu production. Greenhouse experiments were conducted at Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense (UENF), Brazil, employing a randomized block design encompassing six blocks comprising six Hoagland and Arnon nutrient solutions with electrical conductivities of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 4.0 mS cm−1. Harvesting occurred 72 d after sowing, and the plants exhibited improved growth at electrical conductivity close to 3.5 mS cm−1. The levels of N, P, K, B, Zn, Mn, and essential oils of jambu plants increased linearly with increasing electrical conductivity. Twenty-three compounds were detected among the investigated essential oils, with spilanthol, phytol, and acmellonate present in the highest amounts. Increase in electrical conductivity led to increases in the percentage areas of several compounds, such as (Z,Z)-1,8,11-heptadecatriene, caryophyllene, 6-pentadecen-1-ol, 1-pentadecene, spilanthol isomer 1, (E)-β-ionone, kessane, and caryophyllene oxide. Furthermore, higher electrical conductivity resulted in decreasing percentages of compounds such as spilanthol, phytol, and Compound 2. Notably, a 609.74 % increase in caryophyllene and a 25.65 % reduction in spilanthol were observed with increasing electrical conductivity. These results suggest that the productivity of jambu plants is improved, including the production of essential oils, with cultivation in solutions with electrical conductivities above 2.5 mS cm−1. However, this condition may negatively affect most cultivated vegetables. The mechanisms underlying the increased tolerance of jambu to higher electrical conductivities require further investigation.

Abstract The development of hybrid cultivars is one of the most important contributions of a breeding program. A high allelic fixation of the parent lines is essential to guarantee the uniformity of developed hybrids. In this sense, papaya segregation has been observed in the parent lines, impacting the pattern of the hybrids obtained and, consequently, their commercialization. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the JS-12, Sekati, and SS-72/12 genotypes, which are parents of important papaya hybrids, to identify possible segregations and proceed with the generation progress through self-fertilization of selected genotypes for agronomic traits of interest. A mass selection was carried out, selecting 400 plants based on the phenotype, being: 100 plants from the Sekati parent, 100 from the SS-72/12 parent, and 200 plants from the JS-12 parent, of which 100 plants with smaller fruits (JS12-P) and 100 plants with larger fruits (JS12-G). These plants were agronomically evaluated for 15 traits in three evaluation periods. Descriptive statistics of the observations, diversity analysis, as well as the combined selection index and direct selection were performed. Through the descriptive and phenotypic variability analysis, it was possible to verify the existence of variability in the parents, enabling the selection of 80 genotypes, 72 of which were selected via combined selection and eight by direct selection. Given the existence of parents' segregation, the extreme importance of selecting lines with different patterns to be explored in the papaya breeding program is emphasized to purify the parents and adjust the hybrids to meet the consumer market's demand.

Abstract Multivariate analyzes such as selection indexes are one of the ways to select superior papaya genotypes with adequate quality to the consumer market, becoming more efficient after inferences made in the population from the estimate of genetic parameters. Thus, this study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and select papaya topcross hybrids for traits related to fruit quality through selection indexes. The analysis of variance was performed, and the genetic parameters and means test were estimated. The indexes of Smith and Hazel, Pesek and Baker, Mulamba and Mock, and Williams were applied to determine the genetic gains. The genetic parameters indicated a greater environmental influence for firmness, and soluble solids content, where the fruit weight presented the highest genetic variation. The selection showed a reduction in gains for at least one of the essential traits in the quality of the fruits, such as fruit and pulp firmness, soluble solids content, or pulp volume percentage. The Mulamba and Mock index demonstrated satisfactory gains for all these traits with minimal reduction in the others, which is considered the most appropriate for the selection of eight papaya hybrids (UCHJ16-014, UCHJ16-034, UCHJ16-006, UCHJ16-026, UCHJ16-013, UCHJ16-012, UCHJ16-025, and UCHJ16-016).

Abstract Sex determination in papaya plants is a practice of great importance, given the greater commercial interest in hermaphrodite plants. This process is laborious, requiring plant three to five seedlings per hill since the sex types are identified by the flowers four months after planting. The objective of the present study was to perform sexing on papaya seeds through molecular markers by collecting a tissue sample for DNA extraction, without compromising seed germination. Two genotypes were used for the experiment: one of the Solo group (Golden) and another of the Formosa group (UC-01). Germination tests were performed to determine the best type of section (transverse and longitudinal) to remove the endosperm tissue associated with the best disinfestation treatment (fungicide or sodium hypochlorite) which would allow subsequent embryo development. For molecular sexing, six DNA extraction methods were tested in association with two amplification protocols. The association between the longitudinal section and the fungicide treatment provided a high germination percentage (81%) for the genotype of the Formosa group, which did not differ statistically from control (88%). The genotype of the Golden group also exhibited better germination in the longitudinal section treated with fungicide (32%), but the section led to a lower germination percentage than control treatment (82%). The PS2 primer was efficient in sexing the samples, as confirmed by phenotypic sexing. The present study unprecedently demonstrates sexing in Formosa standard papaya seeds via molecular markers, maintaining its germinative potential. For Solo seeds, which are smaller, adjustments should be made to the protocol.

Abstract The papaya (Carica papaya L.) breeding program carried out by UENF has endeavored to develop resistant genotypes. A way to obtain such materials and broaden their genetic base is by incorporating resistance alleles extracted from dioecious genotypes into breeding programs. This study aimed to examine the morpho-agronomic attributes and aspects of resistance to black spot and phoma spot in a new hermaphrodite genotype (H-M3), which was identified in a resistant dioecious progeny (PD-M3). Twenty-one traits were evaluated in six genotypes in a randomized-block design with ten replicates and two plants per plot. Analysis of variance and means test were performed. Genetic parameters and divergence analysis were performed. The H-M3 genotype was near to ‘Calimosa’ and Maradol in the analyzed clusters, indicating good morpho-agronomic attributes and resistance. The proximity of H-M3 to the Maradol genotype is important since Maradol has already been reported as being resistant to black spot and exhibiting lower severity and incidence of phoma spot. Therefore, H-M3 emerges as a promising material for papaya breeding, as it encompasses favorable agronomic traits and moderate resistance.
